Is a Built-In Vacuum Worth It? Weighing the Best Central Vacuum System Units, Hoses and Kits

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. This doesn’t change our recommendations or the price you pay.

The best central vacuum system is really two purchases: a power unit that lives in the basement or garage, and the hose and tools you carry from inlet to inlet. If your house is already piped, you may only need one of them. If it isn’t, installation, not the price of the motor, is usually the bigger project.

We compared seven products sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store: two whole-house power units from OVO and Prolux, a wall-mounted VacuMaid garage vacuum, and four hoses and kits, from a budget low-voltage kit to a hose with a power nozzle. For each, we quote the airwatts, airflow, water lift and coverage figures exactly as the brand states them, and we say plainly when a listing leaves one out.

Before you buy, check what your inlets accept. A hose that expects low-voltage contacts or a pigtail cord won’t do much plugged into the wrong valve.

1. OVO 700 Airwatts Central Vacuum (OVO-700ST-35H): Best Overall Power Unit

OVO 700 Airwatts Central Vacuum (OVO-700ST-35H)

OVO’s 700-airwatt unit is a whole-house central vacuum power unit: a steel canister with the motor on top and a dirt bin below, mounted in a basement, garage or utility room and connected to the pipes that run to inlets around the house. You plug a hose into any inlet, and the unit starts and pulls debris back through the walls into the bin.

OVO lists the motor as a 5.7-inch two-stage design rated at 700 airwatts and 140.2 CFM, and says it covers up to 9,000 square feet with eight inlets or more. Soft start and stop technology, according to OVO, adds 20% to the life expectancy of the motor. An integrated muffler and noise-blocking foam in the motor compartment are meant to keep the unit quiet.

Filtration is hybrid. You can run it with disposable bags, which OVO recommends, or without them, using the included permanent machine-washable filter. The bottom-load dust bin holds 35 liters, or 9.25 gallons. The listing does not state a water lift figure, which is the other common way to compare central vacuum suction.

It suits larger homes with existing central vacuum piping, or new builds where the installer is running pipe anyway, and owners who would rather empty a big bin less often.

Why we like it

  • Biggest stated coverage and bin
  • Bags optional
  • Ten-year warranty field

Watch out for

OVO doesn’t state water lift, so you can compare it with the Prolux only on airflow, not on sealed suction.

ModelOVO-700ST-35H.
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#582,037 overall; #7 in Central Vacuum Systems (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Capacity is OVO’s case. The listing claims it “Covers up to 9000 square feet area, 8 INLET OR MORE,” the largest coverage stated here, and its “35L or 9.25Gal Bottom Load Dust Bin” is bigger than the Prolux’s 6.8-gallon bag or the VacuMaid’s 7 gallons.

Power is given as “700airwatts, 5.7’’ 2-Stage motor – 140.2 CFM.” That airflow trails the Prolux’s 142 CFM slightly, and OVO gives no water lift, so a full suction comparison isn’t possible. “SOFT START / STOP TECHNOLOGY” is said to add “20% to the life expectancy” of the motor, which is OVO’s claim. Filtration works “with disposable bags ( Recommanded) OR Without,” with one washable filter included.

Amazon.com sells it, and it ranks #7 in Central Vacuum Systems, one spot ahead of the Prolux, though only #582,037 overall. The warranty field reads “10 years warranty.” The listed size is 13 x 13 x 32 inches at 27 pounds, lighter than the VacuMaid but heavier than the Prolux’s 22.

Large homes with existing piping, or new builds, will get the most from it. Shoppers who want a stated water lift figure, or North American manufacturing, should compare the Prolux.

Pros

  • 700 airwatts and 140.2 CFM, per OVO
  • Largest stated coverage here: up to 9,000 sq ft, 8 inlets or more
  • Biggest dirt capacity: 35 L / 9.25 gal bottom-load bin
  • Warranty field: “10 years warranty.”
  • Sold by Amazon.com; #7 in Central Vacuum Systems

Cons

  • Water lift not stated
  • Bags are recommended by OVO, an ongoing cost
  • “Adds 20% to the life expectancy” is OVO’s claim
  • Weak overall rank: #582,037

Best for: A homeowner with a large, already-piped house who wants a high-capacity unit with a long warranty field.

2. Prolux CV12000 Central Vacuum: Best Premium Power Unit

Prolux CV12000 Central Vacuum

Prolux’s CV12000 is a whole-house power unit aimed squarely at replacing an existing one. The listing says it is engineered to fit any standard U.S. central vacuum system, with dual intake ports on either side so the pipe can come in from the left or right, and an easy-mount wall bracket for a quick swap.

Prolux lists the specs in detail: 142 CFM of airflow, 116 inches of water lift, and a rating of up to eight outlets or 8,000-square-foot homes. The motor is a two-stage tangential bypass design, which Prolux says means no dirty air passes through the motor, and the body is powder-coated steel meant to resist rust.

Day to day, you can run it bagless, with 3.75 gallons of capacity, or with a bag, at 6.8 gallons; one bag is included, along with a spare bag and a muffler. Prolux pitches a no-suction-loss design, saying its dust-resistant filtration keeps performance consistent year after year. The unit is made in North America and backed by U.S.-based Prolux support, a 25-year body service promise and a 10-year motor service promise.

It suits owners of older homes with central vacuum piping who want a direct replacement, and buyers who value stated water lift and long-term parts availability over the biggest coverage number.

Why we like it

  • Stated water lift and CFM
  • Left or right intake
  • Long service promise

Watch out for

The size field and the bullets disagree on dimensions, so measure your mounting space against the 35-inch height in the bullets and confirm with Prolux.

Modelredcen
SellerProlux-Cleaners
Best Sellers Rank#604,027 overall; #8 in Central Vacuum Systems (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Specs make the Prolux the most transparent unit here. The bullets give “142 CFM Airflow, 116″ Water Lift, Rated for Up to 8 Outlets or 8,000 sq ft Homes,” and it is the only power unit on the page to state water lift.

Retrofit features stand out: it is designed to “fit any standard U.S. central vacuum system,” with “Dual intake ports on either side” and “an easy-mount wall mounting bracket.” Capacity is “6.8 Gallon Bag Capacity, 3.75 Gallon Bagless Capacity,” smaller than OVO’s 9.25-gallon bin. Prolux calls it a “NO SUCTION LOSS SYSTEM,” a brand claim, and says its tangential bypass motor means “no dirty air passes through the motor.”

Prolux-Cleaners, the brand’s store, sells it, and it ranks #8 in Central Vacuum Systems and #604,027 overall. The warranty field reads “10 years.” and the bullets add a “25-Year Body & 10-Year Motor Service Promise.” The size field says 15 x 15 x 41 inches, while the bullets give “35″ Height, 12″ Width”; the listed weight is 22 pounds. It is the priciest pick here.

Owners replacing a tired unit on an existing system should put it first. Buyers with very large homes may prefer the OVO’s 9,000-square-foot rating.

Pros

  • Only unit that states water lift: 116 in
  • Highest stated airflow: 142 CFM
  • Made in North America, per Prolux
  • 25-year body / 10-year motor service promise; warranty field “10 years.”
  • Dual intake ports and a wall bracket for retrofits

Cons

  • Most expensive pick here
  • Size field (15 x 15 x 41 in) differs from the 35 x 12 in in the bullets
  • Rated for less area than the OVO: 8,000 sq ft
  • “No suction loss” is Prolux’s claim

Best for: A homeowner swapping out a worn power unit who wants stated water lift, a long service promise and North American manufacturing.

3. VacuMaid GV50PRO Garage and Car Vacuum: Best Wall-Mounted Garage Vacuum

VacuMaid GV50PRO Garage and Car Vacuum

VacuMaid’s GV50PRO is a wall-mounted vacuum for the garage. The power unit hangs on the wall, and a 50-foot hose reaches around a car, across a workbench or out to the driveway. It is sold by Lindsay Manufacturing, the company listed as its manufacturer.

Everything to start cleaning comes in the box: the 50-foot hose, a hose hanger, a tool caddy, wands, a dusting brush, and floor and upholstery tools. Because it mounts to the wall, VacuMaid says there is no canister to tip over, and the hose and tools hang beside it when you are done.

The body is galvannealed steel with a powder coat for corrosion resistance, and dirt collects in a sealed HEPA-style bag with seven gallons of capacity, so there are no cans to empty or filters to clean, per the listing. The motor is a 5.7-inch Ametek Lamb, which VacuMaid says offers up to 75% more life than comparative brands. The warranty field reads “5 years.” The listing gives no airwatts, CFM or water lift figures.

It suits car detailers, woodworkers and anyone who wants a dedicated vacuum in the garage rather than dragging a shop vac out of the corner each time. The slate gray finish and wall mounting keep it out of the way, and the long hose means the unit can stay put while you work around a full-size vehicle.

Why we like it

  • Hose and tools included
  • Nothing to tip over
  • Bagged, no filter cleaning

Watch out for

VacuMaid doesn’t list suction or airflow numbers, and “HEPA-style” bag wording is not the same as a stated HEPA rating.

Key Specifications

TypeWall-mounted garage vacuum with 50 ft hose
Hose50 ft, with hanger and tool caddy
Motor5.7 in Ametek Lamb (per listing)
Capacity7 gallons, sealed HEPA-style bag
Listed size / weight13 x 13 x 24 in / 30 lb

Listed weight30 pounds
Warranty5 years.
ModelGV50PRO; made by Lindsay Manufacturing, Inc.
SellerLindsay Manufacturing, Inc.
Best Sellers Rank#152,822 overall; #162 in Wet-Dry Shop Vacuums (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Garage duty is the GV50PRO’s whole design. It “mounts quickly & easily to the wall eliminating tipping over,” and it “Includes 50′ hose, hanger, caddy, wands, dusting brush, and floor/upholstery tools,” the only pick that comes ready to clean with no other parts.

VacuMaid lists a “Big 5.7″ Ametek Lamb motor, up to 75% more life than comparative brands,” a comparison the brand makes itself. Unlike the OVO and Prolux, it gives no airwatts, CFM or water lift, which makes suction hard to compare. Dirt goes into a “Sealed HEPA-style bag – No messy cans to empty or filters to clean” with “7 gallon dirt capacity.” HEPA-style is not a HEPA rating.

Lindsay Manufacturing, Inc., the manufacturer named on the listing, sells it. It ranks #152,822 overall and #162 in Wet-Dry Shop Vacuums, the best overall rank among the three motor units. The warranty field reads “5 years.” At a listed 30 pounds and 13 x 13 x 24 inches, it is the heaviest pick. The body is “Galvannealed steel and powder-coated.”

Car owners and workshop users who want a vacuum always on the wall should buy it. Anyone wanting whole-house coverage through wall inlets needs the OVO or Prolux instead.

Pros

  • 50 ft hose plus hanger, caddy, wands and tools included
  • 5.7 in Ametek Lamb motor, per listing
  • Galvannealed, powder-coated steel body
  • 7 gallon dirt capacity in a sealed HEPA-style bag
  • Warranty field: “5 years.”

Cons

  • Heaviest listed pick: 30 lb
  • Airwatts, CFM and water lift not stated
  • “HEPA-style” bag isn’t a HEPA claim
  • “75% more life” is VacuMaid’s comparison

Best for: A car owner or hobbyist who wants a strong vacuum on the garage wall, always ready, with no canister to tip over.

4. OVO Central Vacuum Standard Kit, 50 ft (KIT-LV50S): Best Budget Hose Kit

OVO Central Vacuum Standard Kit, 50 ft (KIT-LV50S)

OVO’s Standard Kit is the hose and tool set you carry from inlet to inlet. The version we link is the 50-foot kit, built around a low-voltage hose with an on/off switch at the handle, so you can start and stop the power unit without walking back to it. A swivel handle is designed to keep the hose from kinking as you move.

For floors, the kit includes a 12-inch dual-function combo brush with a pivoting neck. OVO says its soft retractable bristles won’t damage floors, an anti-static cloth collects dust and surface debris, and a sturdy metal base helps on carpets, so it is designed for both hard surfaces and carpet. A telescopic steel wand with a button lock adjusts from 25.5 to 38 inches to reach high or low spots.

The important limit is in capital letters at the top of the listing: it is not to be used with an electric carpet beater or electrical powerhead. That makes it a suction-only kit. OVO says it is compatible with most existing inlets, and it is offered in 30, 35, 40 and 50-foot lengths.

It suits homes with mostly hard floors and area rugs, and owners replacing a lost or cracked hose who don’t need a powered brush.

Why we like it

  • On/off at the handle
  • Long 50-foot reach
  • Swivel handle

Watch out for

It can’t run an electric powerhead, so deep carpet cleaning needs a different kit.

Key Specifications

TypeLow-voltage hose kit with combo brush

WandTelescopic steel, 25.5 to 38 in

Listed weightNot stated in listing
WarrantyNot stated in listing
ModelKIT-LV50S; made by FYMDM
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#142,101 overall; #84 in Hoses (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Popularity and reach favor OVO’s Standard Kit: it ranks #142,101 overall and #84 in Hoses, the best overall rank on the page, and the version we link has a “50 FT LOW-VOLTAGE HOSE,” matching the VacuMaid as the longest hose here.

The handle has an “ON/OFF switch control,” and a “Swivel handle” to “PREVENT HOSE FROM KINKING.” The floor tool is a “12″ DUAL FUNCTION PREMIUM PIVOTING NECK COMBO BRUSH” with soft bristles and an anti-static cloth, and the “TELESCOPIC STEEL WAND” adjusts “from 25.5” to 38”.” The warning is blunt: “NOT TO BE USED WITH electric carpet beater or electrical POWERHEAD.”

Amazon.com sells it. The weight and warranty fields are empty, and the manufacturer field reads FYMDM rather than OVO. Compatibility is “most existing inlet,” not a universal claim like Prolux’s. Compared with the Prolux kit, you give up a power nozzle and adapters but gain 15 feet of hose at a lower price.

Homes with mostly hard floors and a working system that just needs a new hose are its best fit. Carpet-heavy homes should step up to the Prolux kit.

Pros

  • Best rank here: #142,101 overall, #84 in Hoses
  • 50 ft low-voltage hose with on/off at the handle
  • Swivel handle to prevent kinking
  • 12 in pivoting combo brush for hard floors and carpet
  • Telescopic steel wand, 25.5 to 38 in; sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Not for electric carpet beaters or powerheads, per OVO
  • Weight and warranty fields empty: not stated
  • Compatibility is “most existing inlet,” not all
  • Manufacturer field reads FYMDM, not OVO

Best for: A homeowner with a piped house who needs a new hose and basic tools for mostly hard floors.

5. Prolux 35 ft Universal Hose Kit With Power Nozzle (PL35PT): Best Kit With a Power Nozzle

Prolux 35 ft Universal Hose Kit With Power Nozzle (PL35PT)

Prolux’s 35-foot hose kit is a complete powered setup for an existing central vacuum: a crush-proof hose, a power nozzle with a motorized brush, four deluxe tools, and hangers and caddies to store it all. Prolux says it fits any system using 1.5-inch wall hose inlets and names brands including Prolux, Honeywell, VacuMaid, Beam, Hoover, Aggressor and NuTone.

Compatibility is the clever part. Central vacuum hoses get power to an electric nozzle in two main ways: a pigtail cord that plugs into an outlet beside the inlet, or a direct-connect hose that draws power through the inlet itself. This kit includes adapters for both, which takes some of the guesswork out of ordering.

At the handle, a 3-way switch lets you control the vacuum and the power nozzle separately, so you can turn the brush off when you move from carpet to hard floor. Prolux calls it a North American power nozzle, with soft rubber bumpers and wheels to protect floors and furniture and LED headlights for dim areas. The hose is described as lightweight and built to withstand heavy use.

It suits carpeted homes that need a powered brush, and owners who aren’t sure whether their inlets are pigtail or direct-connect. The storage caddies keep the whole set together in a closet between uses.

Why we like it

  • Two adapter types in the box
  • Separate vacuum and nozzle control
  • LED headlights on the nozzle

Watch out for

Check that your inlets are 1.5-inch, and note that 35 feet reaches less of each room than a 50-foot hose.

Modelpl35pt
SellerProlux-Cleaners
Best Sellers Rank#274,576 overall; #111 in Hoses (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Flexibility is what Prolux’s kit adds. It works with “Any system using 1.5″ wall hose inlets” and “Includes both, ‘pigtial’ and ‘Direct Connect’ adapters,” the only kit here that covers both electric connection types.

The power nozzle is the other draw: “soft rubber bumpers and wheels” and “LED headlights for dim areas.” A “3-way switch allows you to control the vacuum and power nozzle separately,” like the Wessel-Werk’s handle. The box adds “4 deluxe Prolux tools, wall-mounted hose hanger, clip-on wand caddy, and hanging tool storage caddy.” Prolux says it fits systems from Honeywell, VacuMaid, Beam, Hoover and NuTone, a brand claim worth checking against your inlet.

Prolux-Cleaners sells it, and it ranks #274,576 overall and #111 in Hoses. The weight and warranty fields are empty, and the listed size of 12 x 12 x 35 inches doesn’t describe the hose itself. Its 35-foot hose is 15 feet shorter than OVO’s Standard Kit.

Carpeted homes that need a powered brush, and anyone unsure of their inlet type, should order this kit. Hard-floor homes can save with OVO’s suction-only kit.

Pros

  • Includes both pigtail and direct-connect adapters
  • Fits systems using 1.5 in wall inlets, per Prolux
  • 3-way switch controls vacuum and nozzle separately
  • Power nozzle with LED headlights and rubber bumpers
  • Four tools plus hose hanger, wand caddy and tool caddy

Cons

  • Weight and warranty fields empty: not stated
  • Shorter hose than the OVO kit: 35 ft
  • “Fits all central vacuum systems” is the brand’s claim
  • Rank: #274,576 overall, #111 in Hoses

Best for: A homeowner with carpet who wants a complete powered kit that adapts to either common inlet type.

6. Wessel-Werk 30 ft Direct Connect Hose (WW-PCVH-4W): Best Replacement Hose

Wessel-Werk 30 ft Direct Connect Hose (WW-PCVH-4W)

Wessel-Werk’s Progression hose is a 30-foot direct-connect central vacuum hose, sold without tools. Direct connect means power for the vacuum and a powerhead runs through the inlet rather than through a separate pigtail cord, and the title describes it as dual-voltage.

The handle is the selling point. Wessel-Werk describes a gas pump-style grip engineered to reduce hand and wrist fatigue, with a 360-degree swivel at the connection so the hose follows you without twisting. A 3-way switch on the handle lets you control power to both the central vacuum and a central vacuum powerhead independently.

There is also an inline airflow control valve built into the handle, which Wessel-Werk says lets you adjust suction for carpet, hardwood or upholstery without stopping. The hose itself is crushproof, built to keep its shape and airflow when rolled over or stepped on. The listed weight is 7 pounds and the warranty field reads “1 Year Manufacturer Defect Warranty.”

It suits owners who already have a powerhead and tools and want a more comfortable handle with suction control, and whose wall inlets accept a direct-connect hose. Before ordering, confirm your inlets are direct-connect rather than pigtail, since the listing names no adapter in the box, and check that 30 feet reaches the far corners of your largest room.

Why we like it

  • Comfortable swivel handle
  • Suction control at the grip
  • Stated one-year warranty

Watch out for

Nothing but the hose is listed, so budget separately for a powerhead and tools if you don’t own them.

Key Specifications

TypeDual-voltage direct-connect hose only

ModelWW-PCVH-4W
SellerWessel-Werk USA
Best Sellers Rank#948,721 overall; #503 in Hoses (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Comfort at the grip is Wessel-Werk’s focus. The “gas pump-style handle” is “engineered for comfort and control,” and a “360° swivel” lets the hose “follow your movement naturally in any direction.”

Controls are the most complete here: a “3-way on/off switch” for the vacuum and powerhead, plus an “inline airflow valve” to “adjust suction for different surfaces.” Neither OVO kit nor the Prolux kit lists an airflow valve. The hose is “Crushproof” and the title calls it “Direct Connect” and “Dual-Voltage.” What’s missing is everything else: no powerhead, wand or tools are listed.

Wessel-Werk USA sells it, and the warranty field reads “1 Year Manufacturer Defect Warranty,” the only stated warranty among the hoses and kits. The listed weight is 7 pounds. Sales are the weakest here at #948,721 overall and #503 in Hoses, and the listed size of 35 x 1.5 x 0.1 inches can’t describe a 30-foot hose.

Owners with direct-connect inlets and a powerhead they like should consider it. If you need tools or a nozzle too, the Prolux kit is the more complete buy.

Pros

  • Dual-voltage, direct-connect hose, per title
  • 3-way switch for vacuum and powerhead
  • Inline airflow control valve on the handle
  • 360° swivel at the handle; crushproof hose
  • Warranty field: “1 Year Manufacturer Defect Warranty”

Cons

  • Hose only: no powerhead, wand or tools listed
  • Weakest rank here: #948,721 overall
  • Listed size of 35 x 1.5 x 0.1 in doesn’t describe a 30 ft hose
  • Shortest hose here, tied with the OVO garage kit: 30 ft

Best for: A homeowner with direct-connect inlets and an existing powerhead who wants a better handle and hose.

7. OVO Central Vacuum Garage Kit, 30 ft (KIT-30G): Best Garage Hose Kit for an Existing System

OVO Central Vacuum Garage Kit, 30 ft (KIT-30G)

OVO’s Garage Kit is a basic hose set for a central vacuum inlet in the garage. It pairs a 30-foot straight-air crushproof hose with a 12-inch deluxe combo brush on a robust metal base, a telescopic wand and three small tools, so the main house kit can stay inside.

Straight-air hoses carry suction only, with no wiring for a powered brush. The listing doesn’t mention an on/off switch at the handle, so check how your system starts at the garage inlet before ordering. OVO says the kit is compatible with most existing inlets and labels it for hard surfaces.

The telescopic wand locks with a button and adjusts from 25.5 to 38 inches, and the brush assortment includes a dusting brush, an upholstery brush and a crevice tool for seats, door pockets and the gaps around a console. The listed weight is 8 pounds; the listed size of 27 x 16 x 0.04 inches doesn’t describe a hose kit and should be treated as not stated.

It suits homeowners with a piped house and a garage inlet who want to vacuum cars, mats and concrete floors without hauling the indoor hose out to the garage. Keeping a separate hose for grit, gravel and road salt also spares the indoor hose and floor brush from that wear.

Why we like it

  • Cheapest way to clean the garage
  • Crushproof hose
  • Car-friendly tools

Watch out for

It is suction only and the listing doesn’t mention a handle switch, so confirm how your garage inlet starts the power unit.

Why We Recommend It

Price is the Garage Kit’s advantage: it is the only pick in our $$ tier, and it adds a second, dedicated hose for the garage to a system you already own.

The listing is brief: a “Straight air 30ft crushproof hose,” a “12’’ Deluxe Metal robust Base Combo Brush,” a “TELESCOPIC WAND WITH BUTTON LOCK” from 25.5 to 38 inches, and a “Dusting brush, Upholstery brush, crevisse tool.” Straight air means suction only, and the listing doesn’t mention a switch at the handle, unlike OVO’s Standard Kit.

Amazon.com sells it. It ranks #412,964 overall and #1,031 in Attachments. The warranty field is empty, the listed weight is 8 pounds, and the listed size of 27 x 16 x 0.04 inches isn’t usable. Compared with the VacuMaid, it costs far less but depends on your whole-house unit and a garage inlet.

Homeowners with a garage inlet who want to vacuum cars and floors cheaply should grab it. Houses without a garage inlet will need the VacuMaid or a shop vacuum.

Pros

  • Lowest price tier here
  • 30 ft straight-air crushproof hose
  • 12 in deluxe metal-base combo brush
  • Dusting brush, upholstery brush and crevice tool
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • No on/off switch at the handle is mentioned
  • For hard surfaces, per title
  • Warranty field empty: not stated
  • Listed size 27 x 16 x 0.04 in looks wrong; listed weight 8 lb

Best for: A homeowner with a garage inlet who wants a dedicated hose for cars and concrete without buying a second vacuum.

How We Chose the Best Central Vacuum Systems

We limited picks to products sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store and listed as in stock, and we left out every model already covered in our other vacuum guides. Then we compared what each listing actually states:

  • Power figures: airwatts, CFM and water lift, quoted as the brand gives them, with gaps flagged.
  • Coverage: the stated square footage and number of inlets for power units.
  • Filtration and capacity: bagged, bagless or hybrid, and gallons of dirt capacity.
  • Hose type: low-voltage, straight-air, pigtail or direct connect, and whether a power nozzle is included or supported.
  • Warranty and popularity: the warranty field, service promises and Amazon sales rank.

Central Vacuum System Buying Guide

Best Built In Vacuum Power Unit: Airwatts, CFM and Water Lift

Three numbers describe a power unit. Airflow (CFM) is how much air moves, water lift is sealed suction strength, and airwatts combines the two. Brands don’t all publish all three: OVO gives 700 airwatts and 140.2 CFM but no water lift, while Prolux gives 142 CFM and 116 inches of water lift but no airwatts. VacuMaid’s garage unit lists none of them. Compare like with like, and ask the seller for any figure that’s missing.

House Size and Number of Inlets

Coverage ratings are the brand’s own estimates. OVO rates its 700-airwatt unit for up to 9,000 square feet and eight inlets or more, and Prolux rates the CV12000 for up to eight outlets or 8,000 square feet. Long pipe runs and many elbows cost suction, so pick a unit rated comfortably above your square footage rather than right at it.

Bagged vs. Cyclonic and Bagless

Bags hold fine dust and make emptying cleaner; bagless or cyclonic designs skip the ongoing cost. Both power units here are hybrids: OVO recommends bags but includes a washable permanent filter, and Prolux runs bagless at 3.75 gallons or bagged at 6.8 gallons. The VacuMaid uses a sealed HEPA-style bag. “HEPA-style” is not a HEPA rating; the EPA explains that HEPA is a filter type officially defined by the U.S. Department of Energy that can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns in size.

Best Built In Vacuum Cleaner Hose: Low-Voltage, Pigtail or Direct Connect?

Your inlets decide the hose. A low-voltage hose, like OVO’s Standard Kit, starts and stops the unit from the handle but can’t power a brush. A pigtail hose plugs a cord into an outlet near the inlet to run a power nozzle, and a direct-connect hose draws that power through the inlet itself, as with the Wessel-Werk. The Prolux kit includes adapters for both pigtail and direct connect. Straight-air hoses, like OVO’s Garage Kit, are suction only.

Retrofit vs. New Construction

In new construction, pipe goes in before the drywall, which makes routing simple. In an existing home, installers typically run pipe through closets, basements and attics, which takes more planning. If your house is already piped, a replacement unit like the Prolux, with intake ports on either side and a mounting bracket, is far simpler than starting from scratch.

Central, Canister or Backpack?

A central system leaves only the hose and tools to carry, but it costs more up front and depends on the pipes in your walls. If you rent, or don’t want to install anything, a portable vacuum makes more sense. Compare our best vacuum cleaner guide, our best canister vacuum picks for a similar hose-and-wand feel, and our best backpack vacuum guide for stairs and big floor areas.

Installation, Electrical Safety and Indoor Air

A central vacuum power unit is a large motor that runs for long stretches. Read the unit’s manual for its electrical requirements before you choose a mounting spot, and have a licensed electrician add a circuit or outlet if it needs one. The U.S. Fire Administration advises not to overload outlets, to replace worn or damaged extension cords right away, and to avoid putting cords where they can be damaged or pinched. Mount the unit where its exhaust and motor have open air around them, and keep stored items off it.

Allergy sufferers often like central systems because the dirt goes to a unit in another part of the house. The EPA lists three basic strategies to improve indoor air quality: source control, improved ventilation and air cleaners or filtration, and says source control is usually the most effective. None of our picks’ listings states an outdoor exhaust kit, so ask your installer whether venting the exhaust outside is possible for your unit.

Drilling through walls and adding a circuit is also a good time to check your policy. Fire caused by faulty wiring and damage from DIY work can be handled differently, so read our Ohio homeowners insurance guide and our tips for first-time Ohio homeowners before the project starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best central vacuum system for a large house?

Among our picks, the OVO 700-airwatt unit states the largest coverage, up to 9,000 square feet and eight inlets or more, plus a 9.25-gallon bin and a “10 years warranty” field. The Prolux CV12000 is rated for up to 8,000 square feet and is the only unit here that states water lift.

Is a built in vacuum worth it?

It can be if your house is already piped or you’re building, because you only carry a hose and tools from room to room. In an existing home without pipes, installation adds cost and planning, and a good canister or upright vacuum may be the simpler choice.

What is the best built in vacuum cleaner hose?

It depends on your inlets. For suction only, OVO’s 50-foot low-voltage Standard Kit is our budget pick. For carpet, the Prolux kit includes a power nozzle and both pigtail and direct-connect adapters. For a hose-only upgrade on direct-connect inlets, consider the Wessel-Werk.

Do I need an electrician to install a central vacuum?

Check the power unit’s manual for its electrical requirements. If the mounting spot lacks a suitable outlet or the unit needs a new circuit, hire a licensed electrician. The U.S. Fire Administration also warns against overloading outlets.

Can I replace just the power unit on an old central vacuum?

Often, yes. Prolux says the CV12000 is engineered to fit any standard U.S. central vacuum system, with dual intake ports on either side and a wall mounting bracket. Confirm your pipe connections and electrical setup before ordering any replacement unit.

The Bottom Line

For a large, already-piped home, the OVO 700 Airwatts unit is the best central vacuum system to start with: the biggest stated coverage and bin, sold by Amazon.com, with a ten-year warranty field. The Prolux CV12000 suits replacements and buyers who want stated water lift, and the VacuMaid GV50PRO puts a powerful vacuum on the garage wall. For hoses, the OVO Standard Kit covers suction-only cleaning, the Prolux kit adds a power nozzle, the Wessel-Werk upgrades the handle, and the OVO Garage Kit brings the system to your car.
