Out of Gas Mid-Cookout? Best Propane Tank Gauge Picks, From Brass Dials to Scales

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. This doesn’t change our recommendations or the price you pay.

The best propane tank gauge is the one that tells you the tank is low before the burgers are half done. There are three ways to do it: an inline dial that reads pressure between the tank and the regulator, a scale that weighs the tank, or a sensor that reads the liquid level from underneath.

We compared six options, every one in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store: two brass inline dials, two digital scales, a simple lift scale and a magnetic ultrasonic sensor that reports to your phone. For each we quote tank sizes, connections and warranty wording exactly as the listing gives them, and we flag fields that are blank.

One caution up front. A gauge is a convenience, not a leak test. You still need to check connections with soapy water and keep tanks outdoors, as covered in our safety section below.

1. Mopeka Pro Check Bluetooth Tank Sensor: Best Overall Bluetooth Sensor

Mopeka Pro Check Bluetooth Tank Sensor

Mopeka’s Pro Check is a small, round sensor that sticks to the bottom of a propane tank with magnets and reads the liquid level using what Mopeka calls its patented ultrasonic sensor. Readings go to your phone over Bluetooth through Mopeka’s free Tank Check app, which the listing says supports unlimited tanks and sensors with customizable alarms.

Day to day, you glance at the app instead of lifting the tank or watching a needle. Mopeka says the magnets hold even when an RV travels over uneven terrain, and that the sensor fits most standard and custom LPG tanks from 20 pounds up to 120 gallons or 420 pounds, vertical or horizontal. It won’t work on fiberglass tanks. The title says “250 Gallon Max,” which doesn’t match the bullets, so check the brand’s page if you have a large tank.

The listing names an integrated temperature sensor, a tank “bubble level,” configurable sample timing, firmware updates and alarms. Mopeka says the battery is longer-lasting than before but doesn’t state its life. Remote checking away from Bluetooth range needs the Mopeka Wifi Bridge, and a no-phone display needs the Mopeka Monitor; both are sold separately. The unit is configured for North American and other non-European markets and won’t function in the UK or Europe.

It suits RV owners with tanks on the tongue or under a slide, and homeowners with a grill or patio heater who would rather get a phone alert than run out mid-meal.

Why we like it

  • Phone alerts for low tanks
  • Magnetic mount, no plumbing
  • Covers 20 lb to large tanks

Watch out for

It won’t read fiberglass tanks, and the title’s 250-gallon claim conflicts with the 120-gallon figure in the bullets.

ModelM1017010; made by Mopeka Products, LLC
SellerMopeka
Best Sellers Rank#1,337 overall; #77 in Outdoor Cooking Tools & Accessories (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Range and alerts make the case. Mopeka says the sensor fits “most standard and custom LPG tanks from 20lbs up to 120 gallon or 420 lbs,” with an app that “allows unlimited tanks and sensors with customizable alarms.” No other pick here covers tanks beyond 40 pounds.

It reads the level with Mopeka’s “patented ultrasonic sensor,” attaches “through powerful magnets,” and lists an “integrated temperature sensor, tank ‘bubble level,’ configurable sample timing, firmware updates, alarms/alerts.” It ranks #1,337 overall, the best overall rank here, is the lightest pick at a listed 0.09 pounds, and is sold by Mopeka.

Flags: the title says “250 Gallon Max” while the bullets say 120 gallon. It “will not work with fiberglass tanks,” “will not function in European and UK Markets,” and remote use needs the separately sold Wifi Bridge. The warranty field reads “1 year manufacturer warranty when purchased directly from Mopeka.” It’s the only pick above our lowest price tier.

RV owners and anyone with a larger steel tank should start here. Shoppers with one grill tank who don’t want an app can save with a dial or scale.

Pros

  • Reads level from under the tank with ultrasonic sensing, per Mopeka
  • Lists tanks from 20 lb up to 120 gallon or 420 lb
  • Free Tank Check app with alarms, per the listing
  • Lightest pick: a listed 0.09 lb
  • Best overall rank here: #1,337; sold by Mopeka

Cons

  • Only pick above our lowest price tier
  • Won’t work on fiberglass tanks, per the listing
  • North American markets only
  • Title says “250 Gallon Max” but bullets say 120 gallon
  • Warranty field applies when bought directly from Mopeka

Best for: An RVer or homeowner with a 20 lb or larger steel tank who wants level readings and low-tank alerts on a phone.

2. DOZYANT FR00 Propane Tank Gauge: Best Inline Gauge With Leak Detector

DOZYANT FR00 Propane Tank Gauge

DOZYANT’s FR00 is a brass gauge that threads onto the tank valve, with your grill’s regulator then connecting to the gauge. It fits appliances with a QCC1 or Type 1 connection on propane tanks from 5 to 40 pounds, and the listing states plainly that it isn’t suited to tanks larger than 40 pounds.

Once it’s on, you open the tank and the needle reacts to pressure, landing in a color-coded zone you can read at a glance without lifting or removing the tank. DOZYANT lists grills, heaters, smokers, camp stoves, lanterns, tabletop grills, fire pit tables and turkey fryers among the appliances it works with, as well as regulators with hoses and propane adapters. A dust cover comes in the box, and the hand-wheel grip means no tools are needed.

The listing is unusually frank about limits. DOZYANT says the gauge gives an estimated reading rather than an exact measure, because temperature affects pressure: pressure rises in hot weather and falls in cold weather, so the same amount of propane can show different levels. The title also calls it a leak detector, though the bullets don’t explain how to use it that way.

It suits backyard grillers and patio heater owners who want a simple, battery-free dial and understand that winter readings will run low.

Why we like it

  • Top rank in Grill Valves
  • Clear temperature caveat
  • Dust cover included

Watch out for

Expect readings to shift with temperature, and keep doing soap tests for leaks.

ModelFR00
SellerDOZYANT
Best Sellers Rank#1,999 overall; #1 in Grill Valves (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Category rank and candor stand out. The FR00 is #1 in Grill Valves and #1,999 overall, and its listing admits it “provides an estimated reading rather than an exact measurement” because “in cold weather, it decreases.”

Fit is clear: “QCC1 / Type 1 connection” on “propane tanks ranging from 5 lb to 40 lb,” with the note that it is “not suitable for propane tanks exceeding 40 lb.” It’s “100% solid brass,” comes “with dust cover,” and needs “No tools.” The CALPOSE fits the same tanks but doesn’t mention a dust cover. DOZYANT’s own store sells it.

Gaps: the title says “Leak Detector,” but the bullets never explain how to check for leaks with it, and the warranty field is empty. Like any pressure dial, winter readings run low, a problem the Flame King, Ozeri and GrillPro scales avoid.

Grillers and patio heater owners on 20 pound tanks who want an always-on dial should pick it. Owners of 100 pound or larger tanks need something else, such as the Mopeka.

Pros

  • #1 in Grill Valves, #1,999 overall
  • Fits QCC1/Type 1 connections on 5 to 40 lb tanks
  • Solid brass, per the listing
  • Dust cover included; no tools to install
  • Listing is honest about temperature affecting readings

Cons

  • Not for tanks over 40 lb, per the listing
  • Reading is an estimate, the listing says
  • Warranty field empty
  • Leak-detection method isn’t explained on the listing

Best for: A grill or patio heater owner on a standard 20 lb tank who wants a color-coded dial without batteries or an app.

3. CALPOSE PG01 Propane Tank Gauge: Best Budget Inline Gauge

CALPOSE PG01 Propane Tank Gauge

CALPOSE’s PG01 is a compact brass gauge that installs between a propane tank and a QCC1 or Type 1 regulator. The listing says it works with 5 to 40 pound tanks and with regulators with hoses and propane adapters, and it tightens by hand with a knob, so no tools are needed.

The dial uses three colors. CALPOSE says the needle in green means plenty of gas, yellow means not enough and red means the tank is almost empty. The listing explains that the gauge works by checking pressure to estimate how much propane is left, and that you read the progress bar based on the ambient temperature. That’s an honest nod to the same limit every pressure dial has: cold weather lowers the reading.

CALPOSE describes heavy-duty, 100 percent solid brass construction that withstands weather, scratching, denting and corrosion, and calls the gauge weatherproof. The listing says it “Pass quality certificate,” which doesn’t name a standard or testing body, so we don’t treat it as a certification. It also says the gauge can be used to observe leaks, without giving a method.

It suits budget-minded grillers who want a basic dial on a standard tank, and anyone replacing a worn gauge on a patio heater. Pair it with a soap test each season, since the dial alone isn’t a leak check.

Why we like it

  • Strong category rank
  • Simple three-color zones
  • Tool-free install

Watch out for

The quality-certificate wording names no standard, and the warranty field is blank.

ModelPG01
SellerCalpose Global
Best Sellers Rank#1,354 overall; #1 in Patio Heater Replacement Parts (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Strong rank at a low cost is the appeal. CALPOSE’s PG01 is #1 in Patio Heater Replacement Parts and #1,354 overall, second only to the Mopeka on this page.

The listing says it’s “Compatible with all appliances with a QCC1 / type1 connection and 5 lb to 40 lb propane tanks.” It uses three zones: “green zone means there is plenty of gas, yellow means there is not enough gas, and red means the gas is almost depleted.” Construction is “100% solid brass,” installed with a “hand-tightening knob.” Calpose Global, the brand’s store, is the seller.

Read the fine print. “Pass quality certificate” doesn’t name a standard or body, so we don’t count it as a certification. The warranty and weight fields are empty, and the leak claim (“can also be used to observe leaks”) comes without a method. Unlike DOZYANT, it doesn’t list a dust cover.

Budget grillers who want a basic dial should consider it. Anyone who wants app alerts or cold-weather accuracy should look at the Mopeka or a scale.

Pros

  • #1 in Patio Heater Replacement Parts, #1,354 overall
  • Fits QCC1/Type 1 on 5 to 40 lb tanks
  • Three-color dial: green, yellow, red
  • Solid brass, hand-tightened knob
  • Sold by the Calpose Global brand store

Cons

  • “Pass quality certificate” names no standard or body
  • Warranty and weight fields empty
  • Pressure reading, so temperature affects it
  • Leak-checking method isn’t explained

Best for: A grill owner who wants the cheapest well-ranked brass dial and is happy reading green, yellow and red zones.

4. Flame King YSN-PS1 Smart Propane Tank Scale: Best Bluetooth Propane Scale

Flame King YSN-PS1 Smart Propane Tank Scale

Flame King’s Smart Wireless Propane Tank Scale is a flat platform you set the tank on. It weighs the cylinder and sends the reading over Bluetooth to Flame King’s Smart Scale app, which the listing says is free for 20, 30 and 40 pound propane tanks.

Weight-based gauges avoid the main weakness of a pressure dial. Instead of reading a needle that drops in cold weather, you see how much the tank weighs and how much gas that implies. Flame King names barbecue grills, patio heaters and RV campers as uses, and says the scale can track multiple tanks.

Power comes from two AA batteries that aren’t included. Flame King says the scale lasts three months, and over a year if connected to its app, and notes that the red LED lights during connection and is not a power light. The app needs an iPhone or iPad on iOS or iPadOS 15.0 or later, or an Android 11 device with Google Play Services, plus Bluetooth 4.0 or higher. The warranty field reads 30 days and says it is void if bought from any seller other than Amazon Retail or Flame King.

It suits grillers who keep the tank in one spot and want a phone-based weight reading without a sensor stuck to the tank.

Why we like it

  • Weight beats pressure in cold weather
  • App tracks several tanks
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Watch out for

Batteries aren’t included, the warranty is only 30 days, and older phones may not run the app.

ModelYSN-PS1; made by YSN Imports
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#99,849 overall; #655 in Grill Connectors & Hoses (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Weight plus an app is the combination. Flame King says you can “wirelessly track propane levels” and that the “Smart Scale App is now FREE for 20, 30, and 40lb propane tanks.” The Mopeka is the only other connected pick, and it mounts on the tank instead.

Amazon.com is the seller. Power is “2-AA batteries (not included),” and Flame King says the scale “can last for 3 months and over A YEAR if connected to our app.” The listing spells out phone requirements: iOS 15.0 or later, or Android 11 with Google Play Services, and Bluetooth 4.0 or higher.

Weak spots: the warranty field is “Limited 30 Day warranty” and “voids if purchased from any seller that is not Amazon Retail or Flame King.” At a listed 12 x 12 x 2.5 inches it has the biggest footprint here, and its #99,849 overall rank trails both brass dials and the Mopeka.

Grillers who want app-based weight readings without sticking hardware on the tank should pick it. Anyone with an older phone should check compatibility first.

Pros

  • Weighs the tank, so cold weather doesn’t skew a pressure reading
  • Free Smart Scale app for 20, 30 and 40 lb tanks
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • Battery life of 3 months, or over a year with the app, per Flame King
  • Listed weight 0.88 lb

Cons

  • Needs 2 AA batteries, not included
  • Warranty field: 30 days, void outside Amazon Retail or Flame King
  • Phone must run iOS 15 or Android 11 or later
  • Largest footprint here: 12 x 12 x 2.5 in listed

Best for: A griller or RVer who wants app-based tank weights without mounting anything on the tank itself.

5. Ozeri LS2-B Propane Tank and Luggage Scale: Best Multi-Use Digital Scale

Ozeri LS2-B Propane Tank and Luggage Scale

Ozeri’s LS2-B is a handheld hanging scale with a propane mode. Hook it to the tank collar, lift, and the LCD shows the tank’s weight along with a level indicator: E for empty, then a quarter, half, three-quarters and F for full. Ozeri says it is calibrated to common 20 pound exchangeable propane tanks.

The screen lights in one of three colors, red, orange or green, which Ozeri pitches as an instant read for a hurried griller. For more precision, the weight figure lets you do your own math against the tank’s stamped empty weight.

Switch to regular scale mode and it becomes a general hanging scale with a maximum of 110 pounds or 50 kilograms, a unit button for pounds or kilograms, and a tare button for adding items. Ozeri lists fish, small game, groceries, luggage and postage. A built-in digital thermometer reads in Celsius or Fahrenheit, and a retractable three-foot tape measure is built in. The warranty field reads one year, and the listing doesn’t say what battery it uses.

It suits households that grill with standard 20 pound tanks and also travel or fish, where one small scale can cover several jobs. Owners of larger 30 or 40 pound tanks can still read the raw weight, but the E-to-F indicator is built around the 20 pound size.

Why we like it

  • E-to-F level readout
  • Works as a luggage scale
  • One-year warranty field

Watch out for

The propane mode is built around 20 pound tanks, and the listing doesn’t say how it’s powered.

Key Specifications

TypeHanging digital scale with propane mode

Listed weight0.55 pounds
Warranty1 Year Warranty
ModelLS2-B
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#472,338 overall; #60 in Luggage Scales (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Versatility is the selling point. Ozeri says you can “Quickly switch between Propane Tank Mode and Regular Scale Mode,” with a “max 110 lbs/50 kg” capacity and a “Tare button.” No other propane pick doubles as a luggage scale.

In propane mode it is “Calibrated to common 20 lb exchangeable propane tanks” and shows “tank weight along with an indicator for net gas available (E for Empty, ¼, ½, ¾, and F for Full).” The LCD “illuminates in 3 intuitive colors.” It adds a thermometer and a “retractable 3ft tape measure.” Amazon.com sells it, and the warranty field reads “1 Year Warranty.”

Evidence is the weak side. It ranks #472,338 overall and sits in Luggage Scales, the lowest rank here. The propane mode targets 20 pound tanks, unlike the Flame King’s 20, 30 and 40 pound app settings, and the listing doesn’t say how it’s powered.

Households that grill on 20 pound tanks and also want a travel or fishing scale will get the most from it. Grill-only shoppers may prefer the simpler GrillPro.

Pros

  • Calibrated to 20 lb exchange tanks, per Ozeri
  • Shows tank weight plus E to F gas level
  • Color LCD: red, orange or green
  • Doubles as a 110 lb / 50 kg scale with tare
  • Warranty field: “1 Year Warranty”; sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Weakest rank here: #472,338 overall
  • Propane mode is set up for 20 lb tanks
  • Power source not stated on the listing
  • Thermometer and tape measure add clutter if you only grill

Best for: A household that wants one gadget for checking a 20 lb grill tank and weighing luggage or a catch.

6. GrillPro 80069 Propane Tank Scale: Best Simple Lift Scale

GrillPro 80069 Propane Tank Scale

GrillPro’s 80069 is about as simple as a propane gauge gets. You hook it under the handle of a standard North American 20 pound tank, lift, and read how full the tank is from the display. GrillPro says the scale indicates fullness within a range based on the tank’s weight.

There’s nothing to install on the tank and no app to pair. Because it reads weight rather than pressure, the reading isn’t thrown off when a cold morning drops tank pressure, which is the usual complaint about inline dials. The listing describes a large, clear measurement display meant to be read at a glance.

The listing is short on detail. It names only standard 20 pound tanks, so it isn’t meant for small camping cylinders or larger 30 and 40 pound tanks, and the warranty and weight fields are empty. The size field gives 7.75 by 2 by 4.5 inches, small enough to hang on a grill side hook or keep in a drawer with your grilling tools.

It suits grillers who just want to know whether to swap the tank before guests arrive, without brass fittings or a phone. Because the reading is a range, it works best as a quick check rather than a precise count of pounds left in the tank.

Why we like it

  • Nothing to install
  • Reads by weight
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Watch out for

It’s made for 20 pound tanks only and shows a range rather than an exact weight.

Key Specifications

TypeHook-and-lift tank scale

WarrantyNot stated in listing
Model80069
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#136,019 overall; #869 in Grill Connectors & Hoses (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Simplicity wins here. GrillPro says to “Hook it under the handle of any standard North American 20 lbs. tank and lift to take a reading,” with a “Large and clear measurement display.” Nothing attaches to the valve, unlike the DOZYANT and CALPOSE.

It “will indicate the fullness of a propane tank within a range based on its weight,” so cold weather doesn’t drag the reading down the way it does on a pressure dial. Amazon.com is the seller, and the size field lists 7.75 x 2 x 4.5 inches.

The listing is thin. It’s “Compatible with standard 20lb propane tanks” only, gives a range rather than an exact weight like the Ozeri, and leaves the warranty and weight fields empty. Its rank, #136,019 overall, is second-lowest on the page.

Grillers with a single 20 pound tank who want a quick yes-or-no before a cookout should consider it. RVers with larger tanks should look at the Mopeka.

Pros

  • Hooks under the handle of a standard 20 lb tank
  • Reads fullness within a range by weight
  • Large, clear display, per GrillPro
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • Weight-based, so cold weather doesn’t skew a pressure reading

Cons

  • Only for standard 20 lb tanks
  • Reads a range, not an exact weight
  • Warranty and weight fields empty
  • #136,019 overall

Best for: A backyard griller with one 20 lb tank who wants the simplest way to see how full it is.

How We Chose the Best Propane Tank Gauges

We kept only listings that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store, allowed one product per brand, and compared what each listing actually states:

  • How it reads: inline pressure dial, scale weight, or ultrasonic liquid level.
  • Tank fit: stated tank sizes (5 to 40 lb, 20 lb only, or larger RV and home tanks) and the QCC1/Type 1 connection for dials.
  • Extras: app alerts, color zones, dust covers and leak-related wording, quoted as the listing gives it.
  • Evidence: sales rank, seller and the warranty field, with blank or vague fields flagged.

Five of the six fall in our lowest price tier; only the Mopeka sits higher. We didn’t include a magnetic temperature strip because none that met our seller rules was available.

Propane Tank Gauge Buying Guide

Best Propane Tank Level Gauge: Pressure, Weight or Ultrasonic

Inline dials like the DOZYANT and CALPOSE read pressure. DOZYANT’s own listing says temperature affects pressure, so the same amount of propane can show a lower level in cold weather. Scales weigh the tank, which sidesteps that problem. Ultrasonic sensors such as the Mopeka read the liquid level directly from under the tank.

Best Bluetooth Propane Tank Gauge

Two picks connect to a phone. The Mopeka mounts under the tank and sends readings to its free Tank Check app with alarms; the Flame King scale sits under the tank and sends weights to its Smart Scale app. Check phone requirements: Flame King lists iOS 15 or Android 11 and later.

An outdoor patio with tables and heaters

Best Propane Scale for Grills

For a single 20 lb grill tank, a lift scale like the GrillPro or the Ozeri’s propane mode is quick and needs no fitting. The Flame King handles 20, 30 and 40 lb tanks in its app. If you cook on an RV grill, our guide to the best RV grill covers models that run off small cylinders or the camper’s supply.

Best Inline Propane Gauge With Leak Detector

Both brass dials mention leaks: DOZYANT’s title calls it a leak detector and CALPOSE says its gauge can be used to observe leaks. Neither listing explains a method, so don’t treat the dial as a leak test. Both fit QCC1/Type 1 connections on 5 to 40 lb tanks only.

A pot on a portable gas stove at night

Best Magnetic Propane Tank Gauge

Magnetic mounting appears on the Mopeka, which holds to the bottom of a steel tank and, per the listing, stays put while an RV travels. It won’t work on fiberglass tanks. Cheaper magnetic temperature strips exist, but none met our seller and stock rules for this guide.

Camper trailers with string lights and decks

Propane Safety at Home and Camp

A gauge tells you how much gas is left; it doesn’t prove the connections are tight. NFPA’s grilling safety page says to check a propane grill’s tank for leaks before the season, using a soapy solution brushed or sprayed on the hose, regulator and burner connections with the cylinder turned on. If bubbles form, you have a leak, and NFPA says to turn the cylinder off immediately.

The U.S. Fire Administration’s outdoor fire safety messages say to use propane, charcoal and pellet grills only outside, because indoor use can cause a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Its basement and garage page advises storing propane, gasoline, paints and similar fuels in a shed away from your home rather than in the garage. Follow your tank’s label and grill manual for anything else.

If you smell gas indoors or near an appliance, a detector helps; see our guide to the best natural gas detector, which covers propane-sensing models, and keep an extinguisher near the grill area with help from our best fire extinguisher guide. How a grill or propane fire is handled depends on your policy, so ask your agent; our Ohio homeowners insurance guide lists questions to bring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best propane tank gauge?

For phone alerts on a 20 lb or larger steel tank, the Mopeka Pro Check reads the level ultrasonically from underneath. For a simple dial on a 5 to 40 lb grill tank, the DOZYANT FR00 is the top-ranked brass inline gauge here.

Are inline propane gauges accurate in cold weather?

Not very. They read pressure, and DOZYANT’s listing says pressure falls in cold weather, so the same amount of propane can show a lower level. Scales and ultrasonic sensors avoid that problem.

Can a propane tank gauge detect leaks?

Some listings mention leaks, but neither brass dial here explains a method. NFPA recommends brushing or spraying a soapy solution on the hose, regulator and burner connections; bubbles mean a leak, and you should turn the cylinder off.

Is a propane scale better than a dial gauge?

A scale reads weight, so cold weather doesn’t skew it, and nothing attaches to the tank. A dial stays on the tank for constant readings. The Flame King, Ozeri and GrillPro are scales; the DOZYANT and CALPOSE are dials.

Can I store a spare propane tank in my garage?

The U.S. Fire Administration advises storing propane in a shed away from your home. For coverage questions about a grill or propane fire, ask your agent how your homeowners policy applies.

The Bottom Line

The Mopeka Pro Check is our pick for the best propane tank gauge if you want level readings and alerts on a phone, especially on an RV. For a grill on a standard tank, the DOZYANT FR00 and CALPOSE PG01 are well-ranked brass dials, as long as you expect lower readings in cold weather. Prefer weight? The Flame King scale adds an app, the Ozeri doubles as a luggage scale, and the GrillPro is a simple lift-and-read. Whatever you choose, keep soap-testing connections.
