Best Jack Stands, Rated by the Pair: Ratchet and Double-Pin Stands From 2 to 6 Tons

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. This doesn’t change our recommendations or the price you pay.

The best jack stands are the ones holding your car before any part of you goes under it. A floor jack lifts; a stand holds. OSHA’s jack rule says that after a load has been raised, it “shall be cribbed, blocked, or otherwise secured at once,” and that is the job a pair of stands does in a home garage.

We compared six pairs, every one in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store, with one pick per brand. They run from a low-profile 2 ton pair for small cars to a 6 ton double-pin pair for tall trucks.

Capacity wording is where stands get confusing. Some listings give one rating for the pair, one gives it per stand, and two list a pound figure that doesn’t match their own ton rating. For each pick we quote the capacity, height range, lock type and any safety-standard wording exactly as the listing states it, and we flag the gaps.

1. BIG RED T43202 3 Ton Jack Stands: Best Overall for Cars

BIG RED T43202 3 Ton Jack Stands

BIG RED’s T43202 pair, made by Torin, is a classic ratchet-style jack stand: a pyramid-shaped steel base, a notched ratchet bar that slides up through the center, and a saddle on top that meets the vehicle’s support point. The listing describes the stands as “high-grade forged steel with a welded frame design.”

In use, you lift the car with a floor jack, pull each ratchet bar up to just below the support point, and let the pawl drop into a tooth. The bullets describe a “multi-position ratchet bar” with a sawtooth design “allowing for quick height adjustments that lock into place,” and a “Double locking pawl and tooth design for extra protection.” A large saddle surface is meant to give better contact with the load.

Capacity is listed as 3 tons (6,000 pounds) for “the pair of jacks,” and the adjustable height runs from 11-1/4 to 16-3/4 inches. Torin says the stands were “Tested for reliability and safety to meet ASME standards,” but the listing doesn’t name which ASME standard. The title is blunt about fit: “Not Suitable for SUV,Truck.” The wide pyramid foot base is there for stability, and the listed weight is 13.9 pounds.

These suit sedan, coupe and compact owners doing weekend jobs such as brake pads, rotations and oil changes, where the car sits on a smooth, level concrete floor.

Why we like it

  • Height range stated clearly
  • Capacity tied to the pair in the listing
  • Big, popular brand at the low tier

Watch out for

The title rules out SUVs and trucks, and the ASME wording doesn’t name a standard, so check both against your vehicle before buying.

Best Sellers Rank#2,982 overall; #4 in Jack Stands (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

A stated range and a pair rating make the case. The bullets say “The pair of jacks for car has adjustable height ranging from 11-1/4″ to 16-3/4″ with a 3 ton (6,000 lb) load capacity,” one of only two listings here that ties capacity to the pair. It ranks #4 in Jack Stands and #2,982 overall, and Amazon.com is the seller.

Construction wording is specific: “high-grade forged steel with a welded frame design,” a “Wide pyramid foot base,” and a “Double locking pawl and tooth design for extra protection.” That double lock is a pawl-and-tooth design, not the separate pin the YELLOW JACKET, VEVOR and Pro-LifT stands add. The warranty field reads “Limited 1 Year Manufacturer Warranty,” and the listed weight is 13.9 pounds.

Gaps are worth noting. Torin says the stands were “Tested for reliability and safety to meet ASME standards” but doesn’t name PASE or a year; the Amazon Basics listing does. The model field reads T43002 while the title says T43202. And the title itself says “(Not Suitable for SUV,Truck).”

Sedan and small-car owners get a clear, well-documented 3 ton pair here. SUV and pickup owners should pass and look at the VEVOR or Pro-LifT.

Pros

  • #4 in Jack Stands, #2,982 overall
  • Height range 11-1/4 to 16-3/4 in, per listing
  • Bullets: “Double locking pawl and tooth design”
  • Warranty field: “Limited 1 Year Manufacturer Warranty”
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Title says “Not Suitable for SUV,Truck”
  • ASME wording names no standard number
  • Model field reads T43002, title says T43202
  • No secondary locking pin

Best for: A car owner who wants a well-known 3 ton ratchet pair for brakes, tires and oil changes on sedans and small cars.

2. Amazon Basics 3 Ton Jack Stands: Most Popular Budget Pair

Amazon Basics 3 Ton Jack Stands

Amazon Basics sells these as a “Pair of 3 Ton (2.7 metric Ton) jack stands with 6,000-pound capacity,” finished in black and red. The title pitches them at sedans and urban SUVs, which is a fair description of where a 3 ton pair is most at home.

Day to day, they work like any ratchet stand. You raise the center column to the height you need and a self-locking ratchet holds it, so, as the listing puts it, “no locking key is necessary.” Lowering means lifting the car off the stands with your jack and releasing the ratchet. The frame is steel with a rustproof coating, and the bullets mention an “easy-to-read weight capacity” marking.

The listing states that the stands meet the “ASME PASE-2014 Safety Standard for Portable Automotive Service Equipment.” Amazon Basics backs them with a limited one-year warranty, according to the bullets. What the listing leaves out is the height range: no minimum or maximum appears in the title, bullets or size field, so you can’t confirm fit for a low car or a lifted SUV from the page alone.

They suit a first-time home mechanic who wants a simple 3 ton pair for tire, brake and fluid jobs on everyday cars, and who can check the height on arrival before relying on them.

Why we like it

  • Stated PASE-2014 standard
  • Simple self-locking ratchet
  • #1 in Amazon’s Jack Stands category

Watch out for

No height range is listed, so measure your car’s support points and check the stands’ range when they arrive.

SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#421 overall; #1 in Jack Stands (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Popularity leads: #1 in Jack Stands and #421 overall, by far the strongest rank on this page. Amazon.com sells it, and the listing says “Pair of 3 Ton (2.7 metric Ton) jack stands with 6,000-pound capacity,” so the rating is tied to the pair.

It’s also the only stand listing here that names a PASE edition: it “meets ASME PASE-2014 Safety Standard for Portable Automotive Service Equipment.” The “Self-locking ratchet means no locking key is necessary,” the steel frame has a “rustproof coating,” and the bullets promise an “Amazon Basics limited 1-year warranty.” Listed weight is 12.56 pounds.

Two things are missing. The listing never gives a height range, while every other pick does, and there’s no secondary pin like the YELLOW JACKET or VEVOR stands carry. The warranty field is empty and the unit-count field says 1 even though the title says “1 Pair.”

First-time DIYers with sedans or small SUVs who value a stated standard and a huge buyer base should consider it. Anyone with a very low car or a tall truck needs a stated height range, so the Jack Boss or Pro-LifT is the safer bet.

Pros

  • Best rank here: #1 in Jack Stands, #421 overall
  • Only stand listing here naming ASME PASE-2014
  • “Pair of 3 Ton” with 6,000-pound capacity
  • Limited 1-year warranty in the bullets
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Height range not stated anywhere on the listing
  • Single ratchet lock, no secondary pin
  • Warranty field empty
  • Unit-count field reads 1 for a pair

Best for: A first-time DIYer with a sedan or compact SUV who wants the most widely bought pair with a stated PASE standard.

3. YELLOW JACKET 3 Ton Double Locking Jack Stands: Best Double-Lock Pair With a Large Base

YELLOW JACKET 3 Ton Double Locking Jack Stands

YELLOW JACKET’s 3 ton pair adds a second lock to the familiar ratchet design. The listing calls it a “double safety mechanism with handle adjustment locking ratchet bar and metal safety pins,” so once the pawl has caught a tooth, a pin goes through the column as a backup.

Height adjusts through a sawtooth bar that the brand says is “forged from ductile iron, thickened and forged in one piece.” The handle doubles as a release for the saddle column. Range is listed as 10-7/8 to 16-9/16 inches, and the frame is stamped steel with a welded design. YELLOW JACKET describes an “Upgraded Large Base,” with a wide pyramid foot and a large top saddle.

Capacity reads “3 ton(6,600 lb).” Three US tons is 6,000 pounds; 6,600 pounds is closer to three metric tonnes, by our math, and the listing doesn’t say whether the figure applies to the pair or each stand. The bullets say the stands meet “US safety standards” and include a limited one-year manufacturer warranty, but no standard is named and the warranty field is blank. The listed weight is about 16.2 pounds.

They suit owners who like the reassurance of a pin through the column, and who work on sedans, crossovers and small SUVs with support points inside the listed range.

Why we like it

  • Pin backs up the ratchet
  • Wide base and large saddle
  • Strong sales rank

Watch out for

Treat 6,000 pounds for the pair as the working ceiling until YELLOW JACKET clarifies whether 6,600 lb is per pair or per stand.

ModelAS43001C
SellerYELLOW JACKET
Best Sellers Rank#2,227 overall; #2 in Jack Stands (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Two locks are the selling point. YELLOW JACKET lists a “double safety mechanism with handle adjustment locking ratchet bar and metal safety pins,” and says the ratchet bar is “forged from ductile iron, thickened and forged in one piece.” It ranks #2 in Jack Stands and #2,227 overall, second only to Amazon Basics.

Specs are clear on height, 10-7/8 to 16-9/16 inches, and the “Upgraded Large Base” pairs a wide pyramid foot with a large top saddle. At 16.23 pounds listed, it’s heavier than the 3 ton BIG RED (13.9) and VEVOR (11). YELLOW JACKET’s own store is the seller.

Capacity is the weak spot. The title says “3 Ton” and “6600 lb,” but three US tons is 6,000 pounds, and the listing doesn’t say whether the figure is per pair or per stand. “Meeting US safety standards” names no standard, and the warranty field is blank even though the bullets mention a limited one-year warranty.

Owners who want a pin behind the ratchet and a broad base under cars and small SUVs will like it. If you want a named standard, the Amazon Basics pair states PASE-2014.

Pros

  • #2 in Jack Stands, #2,227 overall
  • Ratchet bar plus metal safety pins
  • Height range 10-7/8 to 16-9/16 in
  • Forged ductile iron ratchet bar, per listing
  • Sold by the YELLOW JACKET store

Cons

  • “3 ton (6,600 lb)” mixes US tons and pounds
  • Listing doesn’t say per pair or per stand
  • “US safety standards” names no standard
  • Warranty field empty; 1-year warranty in bullets

Best for: A home mechanic who wants a pin backing up the ratchet and a wide base, for cars and small SUVs.

4. VEVOR 3 Ton Double Locking Jack Stands: Best Value Double-Lock Pair

VEVOR 3 Ton Double Locking Jack Stands

VEVOR’s 3 ton pair pairs a ratchet bar with metal safety pins, the same two-lock idea as the YELLOW JACKET stands. The listing calls it a “double safety mechanism with handle adjustment locking ratchet bar and wear-resistant metal safety pins.”

Height comes in nine steps, from 10.8 inches (275 mm) to 16.3 inches (415 mm), per the bullets. The top of the ratchet bar has a notched saddle that VEVOR says “perfectly fits the edges of the vehicle.” Below, a wide pyramid base and triangular foot pad give what the brand describes as a load-bearing area “four times larger,” a comparison VEVOR doesn’t explain. The base is carbon steel and the ratchet bar is cast iron with a rust-proof coating.

Capacity wording is inconsistent. The title says “3 Ton (6,000 lbs),” while a bullet says “3-ton/6600 lbs,” and neither says whether it is per pair or per stand. VEVOR says the stands “conform to CE standards”; no ASME or PASE standard is named. The weight field gives 11 pounds; the 24 x 15 x 12 inch size field is larger than a stand, so it likely reflects packaging.

They suit DIYers who want a pin backup on a budget for cars, crossovers and, as VEVOR lists, SUVs, pickups and UTVs whose support points fall inside 10.8 to 16.3 inches.

Why we like it

  • Nine height positions
  • Pin plus ratchet
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Watch out for

Use the lower 6,000 lb figure for the pair, and note that the listing cites CE rather than an ASME standard.

Key Specifications

TypeRatchet plus safety pin, 3 ton pair
CapacityTitle 3 ton (6,000 lb); bullet 3 ton/6,600 lb
Height range10.8 to 16.3 in, 9 positions
LockLocking ratchet bar plus metal safety pins
BuildCarbon steel base, cast iron ratchet bar, rust-proof coating
Size24 x 15 x 12 in
Listed weight11 pounds
WarrantyNot stated in listing
ModelHM3141C
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#2,816 overall; #3 in Jack Stands (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Nine height positions and a pin, sold by Amazon.com, sum up the appeal. VEVOR lists “9-level adjustable heights, ranging from 10.8 inches (275mm) to 16.3 inches (415mm)” and “a double safety mechanism with handle adjustment locking ratchet bar and wear-resistant metal safety pins.” It ranks #3 in Jack Stands and #2,816 overall.

Build details include “a strong carbon steel base and a ratchet bar made of cast iron with a rust-proof coating,” plus a notched saddle and triangular foot pads. The weight field reads 11 pounds, light for a pinned pair. VEVOR’s “four times larger” load-bearing claim is its own comparison.

Its paperwork is weaker than the BIG RED or Amazon Basics listings. The title says 6,000 pounds and a bullet says 6,600, with no per-pair note; the only standard cited is CE, not ASME; the raw warranty field reads “NO”; and the 24 x 15 x 12 inch size field looks like the carton.

Budget shoppers who want a pin-backed pair for cars, crossovers and smaller trucks inside 10.8 to 16.3 inches get good value. Anyone who wants a stated ASME standard should choose Amazon Basics or BIG RED.

Pros

  • #3 in Jack Stands, #2,816 overall
  • Locking ratchet bar plus metal safety pins
  • 9 height positions, 10.8 to 16.3 in
  • Notched saddle top, per listing
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Title says 6,000 lb, bullet says 6,600 lb
  • Cites CE standards, not ASME
  • Warranty field reads “NO” in the raw listing
  • Size field (24 x 15 x 12 in) looks like the carton

Best for: A budget-minded DIYer who wants a pin-backed ratchet pair from a seller of record at Amazon.com.

5. Jack Boss Low Profile 2 Ton Jack Stands: Best Low Profile

Jack Boss Low Profile 2 Ton Jack Stands

Jack Boss, a Torin brand per the manufacturer field, builds this two-pack for small, low cars. The stands start at 9.8 inches and top out at 15 inches, which the listing says suits “most 2 Ton Low profile autos” and is “not recommendable for Pick-Up, Truck, too big SUVs etc. whose automobile chassis higher than 15”.”

Operation is the usual ratchet routine. A “multi-position ratchet bar made of ductile iron” with a sawtooth profile sets the height, and a “hand self-locking mechanism” holds it. There is no separate pin. On top, a “large concave top saddle” cradles the support point, and the base is a wide pyramid of mild steel with a fully welded frame and red powder coating for rust protection.

Capacity wording needs care. The specification bullet says “2 ton (4,000 lb) capacity for single jack stand,” while the title just says “2 Ton(4000 LBs)” for a 2 pack. Jack stand manuals from other makers say a pair shouldn’t carry more than one stand’s rating, so plan on 4,000 pounds for the pair. The bullets give a net weight of 10.5 pounds, and the listing includes a limited one-year manufacturer warranty.

They suit owners of compact cars, sports cars and lowered sedans who find that standard stands won’t fit under the support points.

Why we like it

  • Starts at 9.8 inches
  • Light to carry
  • One-year warranty field

Watch out for

At 2 tons and 15 inches maximum, these are for small, low cars only, and the per-stand capacity wording is unusual.

Key Specifications

TypeLow-profile ratchet stands, 2 ton, 2 pack
Capacity2 ton (4,000 lb), listed “for single jack stand”
Height range9.8 to 15 in
LockDuctile iron sawtooth ratchet, hand self-locking
Weight10.5 lb net (bullet); 10 lb (field)
Size6.4 x 5.6 x 9.8 in
Listed weight10 pounds
Warranty1 Year
ModelAS42002X; made by Torin
SellerJack Boss
Best Sellers Rank#5,366 overall; #6 in Jack Stands (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Height is the reason to pick it. Jack Boss lists a range “from min 9.8 ” to max 15 “,” the lowest starting point on this page, about an inch below the VEVOR’s 10.8 inches. The Jack Boss store sells it, and it ranks #6 in Jack Stands and #5,366 overall.

The build is simple: “durable mild steel” with a “complete welded frame,” red powder coating, a “large concave top saddle,” and a ductile iron sawtooth ratchet with a “hand self-locking mechanism.” The warranty field reads “1 Year,” and the bullets give a net weight of 10.5 pounds against 10 pounds in the weight field.

Limits are spelled out. It’s rated “2 ton (4,000 lb) capacity for single jack stand,” the lowest capacity here, and the listing says it’s “not recommendable for Pick-Up, Truck, too big SUVs.” Stand makers’ manuals say a pair shouldn’t exceed one stand’s rating, so we’d treat 4,000 pounds as the pair limit. No ASME or PASE wording appears.

Owners of compacts, sports cars and lowered cars will find this pair fits where 3 ton stands don’t. Anyone with an SUV or truck should skip it.

Pros

  • Lowest minimum here: 9.8 in
  • Warranty field: “1 Year”
  • Large concave top saddle
  • #6 in Jack Stands, #5,366 overall
  • Sold by the Jack Boss store

Cons

  • Lowest capacity here: 2 ton
  • Max height only 15 in
  • Listing not for pickups, trucks or big SUVs
  • No ASME or PASE wording

Best for: An owner of a small or low car who needs stands that start below 10 inches.

6. Pro-LifT T-6906D 6 Ton Double Pin Jack Stands: Best 6 Ton Pair for Tall Vehicles

Pro-LifT T-6906D 6 Ton Double Pin Jack Stands

Pro-LifT’s T-6906D is a tall, heavy-duty double-pin stand sold as a pack of two. The listing gives a lifting range of 16 to 23-1/2 inches, so it starts where most car stands top out. That makes it a tool for pickups, vans and tall SUVs rather than sedans.

Locking comes in layers. The bullets describe “both handle locks and mobility pin,” “Counter weighted pawls” that serve as “a secure locking device to prevent the load from accidental disengagement,” and an “Attached pin lock” that locks the ratchet bar “for an additional carrying point.” The ratchet bar is cast ductile iron, and the frame is stamped steel.

Pro-LifT lists a 6 ton capacity without saying whether it applies to the pair or each stand, and says the stands “Meets or exceeds ANSI/PALD standards” for home, auto, truck service, farm and shop use. The listing doesn’t cite PASE by name. The weight field reads 26.4 pounds, the most here, and the warranty field reads “One Year.”

They suit owners of full-size pickups, vans and lifted vehicles who need extra height and capacity in the garage or barn. Before you order, check that your floor jack can raise the frame a little past 16 inches, the minimum needed to slide these stands into place.

Why we like it

  • Tallest reach here
  • Pin and pawl locking
  • Built for trucks and farm use

Watch out for

A 16-inch minimum means these won’t slide under most cars, and you need a jack with enough lift to set them.

Key Specifications

TypeRatchet plus pin, 6 ton, pack of 2
Capacity6 ton, per pair or stand not stated
Height range16 to 23-1/2 in
LockHandle locks, mobility pin, counter-weighted pawls

Listed weight26.4 pounds
WarrantyOne Year
ModelT-6906D; made by Pro-Lift
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#25,110 overall; #22 in Jack Stands (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Reach is what separates it: “lifting range from 16 inches to 23-1/2 inches,” the tallest by more than six inches over any other pick. The 6 ton rating is the highest here too, and Amazon.com sells the pack of two.

Locking is the most layered on the page: “both handle locks and mobility pin,” “Counter weighted pawls” that “prevent the load from accidental disengagement,” and an “Attached pin lock” for “an additional carrying point.” The frame is stamped steel with a cast ductile iron ratchet bar. The warranty field reads “One Year.”

Watch the details. The listing doesn’t say whether 6 tons is per pair or per stand, and its standards line is “Meets or exceeds ANSI/PALD standards,” not PASE. At 26.4 pounds listed it’s the heaviest pick, and it ranks #22 in Jack Stands and #25,110 overall, the weakest rank here. Its 16 inch minimum is about where the 3 ton stands top out.

Full-size pickup, van and lifted-SUV owners who need height should choose it. Car owners should look at the 3 ton picks instead.

Pros

  • Highest reach here: 16 to 23-1/2 in
  • Handle locks plus mobility pin
  • Counter-weighted pawls, per listing
  • Warranty field: “One Year”
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • 16 in minimum is too tall for most cars
  • Heaviest here: 26.4 lb listed
  • Weakest rank here: #25,110 overall
  • Per-pair or per-stand capacity not stated

Best for: A pickup or tall SUV owner who needs stands that reach well past 16 inches.

How We Chose the Best Jack Stands

We kept only listings that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store, allowed one pair per brand, skipped any listing that mentioned a recall (none did), and compared what each listing actually says:

  • Capacity wording: the ton and pound figures, and whether the listing ties them to the pair or a single stand.
  • Height range: minimum and maximum, which decide whether a stand fits under a low car or reaches a truck frame.
  • Locking: ratchet and pawl only, or a ratchet backed by a pin.
  • Standards wording: ASME PASE, “ASME standards,” ANSI/PALD or CE, quoted as written. We don’t upgrade vague wording to a certification.
  • Evidence: sales rank, seller, the warranty field and listed weight, with blank or odd fields flagged.

Five of the six land in our lowest price tier; only the 6 ton Pro-LifT pair sits a tier higher.

Jack Stand Buying Guide

Jack Stand Weight Rating: Per Pair or Per Stand?

Read the rating as the most a matched pair should carry. OTC’s automotive stands manual says to “Use only as an identical pair” and that “Maximum load capacity per identical pair shall not exceed the rated capacity of the individual stand.” Harbor Freight’s 3 ton jack stand manual marks its capacity as “Evenly distributed across two Jack Stands.” Among our picks, BIG RED and Amazon Basics tie their 3 ton figure to the pair, Jack Boss lists 2 tons “for single jack stand,” and the others don’t say. Both manuals also say to use stands to support one end of a vehicle only, not both ends at once.

Best 3 Ton Jack Stands for Cars and Small SUVs

Four of our picks are 3 ton pairs. The BIG RED lists 11-1/4 to 16-3/4 inches and rules out SUVs and trucks in its title. The YELLOW JACKET (10-7/8 to 16-9/16 inches) and VEVOR (10.8 to 16.3 inches) add a safety pin. The Amazon Basics pair is the most popular stand on Amazon and the only stand here that names ASME PASE-2014, but its listing gives no height range. Note that YELLOW JACKET and VEVOR list 6,600 pounds next to “3 ton”; three US tons is 6,000 pounds, so use the lower number.

A car tire on a paved driveway

Best 6 Ton Jack Stands for Trucks

Capacity isn’t the only reason to step up. The Pro-LifT T-6906D reaches 16 to 23-1/2 inches, which matters on a pickup or van with high frame points. The trade-off is weight (26.4 pounds listed) and a minimum height too tall for most cars. Both stand manuals we read say a pair supports one end of a vehicle only, so compare the rating with the weight on the end you’re lifting, not just the curb weight.

Best Double Locking Jack Stands

“Double locking” means different things on different listings. YELLOW JACKET and VEVOR back the ratchet with a metal pin through the column; Pro-LifT combines handle locks, a mobility pin and counter-weighted pawls. BIG RED uses the phrase for a “double locking pawl and tooth design,” with no separate pin. The Amazon Basics and Jack Boss stands rely on a self-locking ratchet. OTC’s manual says to ensure pins are “completely inserted” and lock handles “completely engaged in ratchet grooves” before lowering the load.

Laying out a socket and wrench set on a floor

Best Low Profile Jack Stands

If your car’s support points sit low, the minimum height matters more than capacity. The Jack Boss pair starts at 9.8 inches, the lowest here, and stops at 15 inches. The VEVOR (10.8 inches) and YELLOW JACKET (10-7/8 inches) come next. Remember that the jack has to lift the car just above the stand’s minimum before you can slide it in, so a low-profile floor jack helps; see our guide to the best floor jack.

ASME’s PASE standard page says PASE covers the design, construction, marking, operation, maintenance and inspection of portable automotive service equipment, including automotive stands, jacks and ramps. Only the Amazon Basics listing names PASE (2014). BIG RED says its stands were “Tested for reliability and safety to meet ASME standards,” Pro-LifT says “ANSI/PALD,” YELLOW JACKET says “US safety standards,” VEVOR says CE, and Jack Boss names none.

Working Under a Car Safely

A jack is a lifting tool, and the stands are what you work under. OSHA’s standard for jacks (1910.244) says the operator must make sure a jack has “a rating sufficient to lift and sustain the load,” and that once the load is raised it “shall be cribbed, blocked, or otherwise secured at once.” Both stand manuals we read add these steps:

  • Surface: OTC says “Use only on a hard, level surface capable of supporting the load.” Harbor Freight adds dry, flat and free of grease or debris.
  • Chocks: Harbor Freight says, “If you are raising only one end of the vehicle, block the tires that remain on the ground.” Our wheel chocks guide covers rubber and plastic options.
  • Placement: set saddles at the vehicle maker’s designated support points, at the same point on each side, and lower the car slowly onto both stands.
  • Don’t drop the load: Harbor Freight warns that a vehicle dropped onto stands can make them fail even below the capacity limit.
  • Short-term only: the same manual says not to use stands as a permanent stand; lower the vehicle when repairs are done.

Once the car is steady on both stands, a low creeper keeps you off the cold concrete; see our best mechanic creeper guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best jack stands for most cars?

For sedans and small cars, start with a 3 ton pair such as the BIG RED T43202 (11-1/4 to 16-3/4 inches) or the Amazon Basics pair, which ranks #1 in Amazon’s Jack Stands category and names ASME PASE-2014. Want a pin backing up the ratchet? Look at the YELLOW JACKET or VEVOR.

Is a jack stand weight rating per pair or per stand?

It depends on the listing, so read it closely. OTC’s manual says a pair should not carry more than the rated capacity of one stand, and Harbor Freight’s manual says its 3 ton rating is evenly distributed across two stands. When a listing doesn’t say, treat the rating as the limit for the pair.

Are 6 ton jack stands better than 3 ton jack stands?

Not for every car. The Pro-LifT 6 ton pair reaches 16 to 23-1/2 inches, which suits pickups and tall vehicles, but that 16 inch minimum won’t fit under most cars. Pick the capacity and height range that match your vehicle.

What does double locking mean on jack stands?

Usually a ratchet and pawl backed by a pin through the column, as on the YELLOW JACKET, VEVOR and Pro-LifT picks. BIG RED uses the term for a double locking pawl and tooth design without a separate pin, so check what each listing actually describes.

Can I get under a car held up only by a floor jack?

No. OSHA’s jack rule says a raised load must be cribbed, blocked or otherwise secured at once, and jack makers such as Arcan tell owners to support the vehicle with jack stands before working on it. Set a matched pair of stands on a hard, level surface and chock the wheels still on the ground.

The Bottom Line

For most car owners, the BIG RED T43202 pair is the best jack stands pick to start with: a clear height range, a pair rating and a strong rank. The Amazon Basics pair is the most popular and names ASME PASE-2014, the YELLOW JACKET and VEVOR pairs add a safety pin, the Jack Boss pair starts lowest for small cars, and the Pro-LifT T-6906D reaches pickup frames. Whichever you choose, lift with a jack, hold with stands, and chock the wheels.
