The best steam iron is one you can trust when the doorbell rings mid-shirt. That’s why we start with auto shut-off: whether a listing states it at all, and if so, how quickly the iron powers down on its soleplate, its side or its heel. After that come steam output, wattage, soleplate type, anti-drip design and the cord, or the lack of one.
We compared seven irons using their Amazon listings, from a basic 1,200-watt model to Rowenta’s 1,850-watt Steam Force Pro, plus two cordless designs for small spaces and travel. Every pick was in stock and sold by Amazon.com when we checked. Steam figures and comparisons with other brands are the makers’ own claims, and we say plainly when a listing leaves out something you’d want to know, such as auto-off on two of the pricier picks.

1. Rowenta Focus Excel Steam Iron DW5280: Best Overall
Rowenta’s Focus Excel is a 1,725-watt corded steam iron built around a soleplate with more than 400 active steam holes. Rowenta claims it has the best steam distribution on the market, and the listing pitches it for everyday shirts as well as thick fabrics like cotton and wool.
In use, you pick a heat setting for the fabric and then adjust steam with the variable steam control. For stubborn creases, Rowenta lists a steam boost of up to 135 grams per minute, with continuous steam of up to 35 grams per minute for regular passes. A precision tip is meant to get into collars, plackets and around buttons.
Safety and upkeep features are spelled out: an auto-off function, an anti-drip feature to help prevent leaks onto fabric, a self-cleaning function that flushes out impurities, and an anti-calc system that Rowenta says prevents calcium deposits from building up inside. The listing names cotton, wool, poly, rayon and silk as suitable fabrics.
It suits anyone ironing work shirts or linens weekly who wants a dependable mid-priced iron. Note what the listing doesn’t say: the cord length, the water tank size and exactly when the auto-off kicks in. Check the manual before you rely on it.
Why we like it
- 400+ steam holes
- 135 g/min steam boost
- Self-clean and anti-calc
Watch out for
The listing doesn’t give auto-off timing, cord length or tank size, and the warranty field is one year.
Key Specifications
| Type | Corded steam iron |
|---|---|
| Power | 1725 watts |
| Steam | Boost up to 135 g/min; continuous up to 35 g/min |
| Soleplate | 400+ active steam holes |
| Safety | Auto-off; anti-drip |
| Size | 11.81 x 5.51 x 5.91 in |
| Listed weight | 3.22 pounds |
| Warranty | 1 Year Limited Warranty |
| Model | 14501165847 |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #1,353 overall; #2 in Irons (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Rank and steam make the case. The Focus Excel is #2 in Irons and #1,353 overall, the best on this page, and Rowenta lists “a steam boost of up to 135 g/minute” with “continuous steam output up to 35 g/min.”
Rowenta claims “the best steam distribution on the market*” from “over 400 active holes.” Safety bullets include “an auto-off function for safety, an anti-drip feature and a precision tip,” plus a “Self-cleaning function” and an “Anti-Calc system.” It draws 1,725 watts, weighs a listed 3.22 pounds and is sold by Amazon.com.
Some details are missing. Unlike the BLACK+DECKER Allure, the listing doesn’t say when auto-off triggers. Cord length and tank size aren’t given, while the Sunbeam lists 8 feet and 170 ml. The warranty field reads “1 Year Limited Warranty,” the shortest stated term here.
Regular ironers who want strong, even steam with auto-off and anti-drip should start here. If exact shut-off timing or a long warranty matters most, the Allure or Sunbeam fits better.
Pros
- Best rank here: #2 in Irons, #1,353 overall
- Over 400 active steam holes, per listing
- Steam boost up to 135 g/min; continuous up to 35 g/min
- Auto-off, anti-drip and anti-calc, per listing
- Self-cleaning function
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Auto-off positions and timing not stated
- Cord length and tank size not stated
- Warranty field: “1 Year Limited Warranty,” shortest stated here
- Listed weight 3.22 lb
Best for: A household that irons often and wants a well-reviewed Rowenta with strong steam, auto-off and anti-drip.
2. Rowenta Steam Force Pro DW9580: Best Premium
Rowenta’s Steam Force Pro is the most powerful iron in this guide at 1,850 watts. Rowenta says its pump technology drives deeper steam penetration, and a steam boost trigger lets you decide exactly when and where steam goes, which the brand calls a tailor-made experience.
Instead of a dial, a smart screen offers five adjustable fabric settings, and Rowenta describes precise electronic temperature and steam adjustment for consistent, controlled heat. The listing says electronic steam regulation is meant to stop leaks, unwanted color transfers and residue, and the title lists anti-drip protection and a stainless steel soleplate.
Rowenta describes a uniquely weighted design with a gentle pressing action, and it is clear about the trade-off: the iron is engineered for horizontal ironing with no vertical steam function. If you want to steam curtains or a hanging jacket, this isn’t the tool. The listing does not mention an auto shut-off feature, so check the manual before buying if that matters to you.
It suits people who iron a lot of cotton, linen or heavy fabrics and want electronic presets and the most wattage available here. Shoppers who prioritize stated auto-off or vertical steaming should look at the Focus Excel or another pick.
Why we like it
- 1,850 W, the most here
- Five electronic fabric presets
- Steam on demand by trigger
Watch out for
No auto shut-off is mentioned and there is no vertical steam, so it’s a board-only iron.
Key Specifications
| Type | Corded pump steam iron |
|---|---|
| Power | 1850 watts |
| Controls | Smart screen, five fabric settings |
| Soleplate | Stainless steel (per title) |
| Steam | Pump technology; boost trigger; no vertical steam |
| Size | 12.6 x 5.98 x 0.1 in |
| Listed weight | 4.19 pounds |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
| Model | DW9580; made by Groupe SEB |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #3,181 overall; #8 in Irons (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Power is the pitch: 1,850 watts, the most here, with “unique pump technology” and a “steam boost trigger for custom control over when and where you apply steam.”
Rowenta lists a smart screen with “five adjustable settings,” “precise electronic temperature and steam adjustment,” and “electronic steam regulation” for “no more leaks, unwanted color transfers, and residue.” The title names a stainless steel soleplate and anti-drip protection. It ranks #8 in Irons and #3,181 overall, and Amazon.com is the seller.
Three gaps stand out. The listing says it is “engineered for superior horizontal ironing with no vertical steam function.” It doesn’t mention auto shut-off, which the cheaper Focus Excel lists. The warranty field is empty, and the size field’s 0.1-inch height is a placeholder; the 4.19-pound weight matches the Panasonic’s listed weight exactly, so confirm it.
Heavy-duty ironers who work only on a board and want electronic presets should consider it. Anyone who wants stated auto-off or vertical steaming should skip it.
Pros
- Highest wattage here: 1,850 W
- Pump technology and steam boost trigger, per listing
- Smart screen with five fabric settings
- Stainless steel soleplate, per title
- Electronic steam regulation for leak-free ironing, per listing
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Auto shut-off not mentioned in the listing
- Listing says it has no vertical steam function
- Warranty field is empty: not stated
- Listed size height of 0.1 in is clearly wrong
Best for: A frequent ironer who wants maximum power and electronic fabric presets and only irons on a board.
3. BLACK+DECKER Allure Professional Steam Iron D3030: Best Auto Shut-Off Value
BLACK+DECKER’s Allure is a corded steam iron with a heavy-duty stainless steel soleplate and what the brand calls Dynamic Steam Technology. BLACK+DECKER says it produces 30% more steam than two named competitors, the Shark GI405 and T-Fal FV4476, and recommends fully preheating and using clean tap water for best performance.
Its auto-off is the most clearly described on this page. The iron shuts off after 30 seconds on its side or soleplate and after 8 minutes resting on its heel. The listing even explains that if it stops heating unexpectedly, it may be in shutoff mode, and you reposition it to reactivate. That detail matters if you set the iron down to answer the door or deal with a child.
Temperature and steam are controlled separately, so you can run high heat with little steam or the reverse, adjusting to the fabric label. An Auto Clean system flushes out mineral deposits, and the brand recommends regular use to keep steam flowing, especially with hard water. To keep the soleplate gliding, it advises against ironing over zippers or buttons and wiping it clean after use.
It suits budget shoppers, first apartments and anyone who wants a stated, position-based shut-off. The listing doesn’t state the wattage, cord length or tank size.
Why we like it
- Exact shut-off timing by position
- Stainless steel soleplate
- Two-year warranty field
Watch out for
Wattage, cord length and tank size aren’t listed, and the steam claim is a brand comparison.
Key Specifications
| Type | Corded steam iron |
|---|---|
| Auto shutoff | 30 sec on side or soleplate; 8 min on heel |
| Soleplate | Stainless steel |
| Controls | Separate variable temperature and steam |
| Cleaning | Auto Clean system |
| Size | 4.28 x 5.69 x 11.68 in |
| Listed weight | 1.9 pounds |
| Warranty | 2-year limited warranty. |
| Model | D3030; made by Spectrum Brands |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #4,022 overall; #11 in Irons (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Shut-off clarity sets the Allure apart: “the iron shuts off after 30 secs on its side or soleplate, and after 8 mins on the heel.” No other listing here gives timing by position.
BLACK+DECKER says it “Produces 30% more steam,” a claim made “When compared to Shark GI405 and T-Fal FV4476,” not against the irons on this page. You get a “STAINLESS STEEL SOLEPLATE,” separate temperature and steam controls, and an “AUTO CLEAN SYSTEM” that “flushes out mineral deposits.” The warranty field reads “2-year limited warranty,” and Amazon.com sells it. It ranks #11 in Irons and is listed at 1.9 pounds.
The listing skips wattage, tank size and cord length, all stated for the Sunbeam and Amazon Basics. Anti-drip isn’t mentioned, while both Rowentas list it.
Safety-minded households on a budget, and anyone who sets the iron down mid-task, should pick it. Shoppers who want stated wattage and anti-drip may prefer the Focus Excel.
Pros
- Only listing with exact timing by position: 30 sec side/soleplate, 8 min heel
- Stainless steel soleplate
- Separate temperature and steam controls
- Auto Clean system for mineral deposits
- Warranty field: “2-year limited warranty”
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Wattage not stated in the listing
- “30% more steam” is a brand comparison, not a spec
- Tank size and cord length not stated
- Anti-drip not mentioned
Best for: A budget-minded household that wants to know exactly when the iron will shut itself off.
4. Sunbeam Classic Steam Iron: Best Budget
Sunbeam’s Classic is a straightforward 1,200-watt steam iron with a mid-size nonstick soleplate, a spray mist button and a shot-of-steam feature. Sunbeam says the 1,200 watts give quick heating, and the shot of steam works horizontally on the board or vertically for hanging garments, upholstery or drapes.
The cord is the practical standout. At 8 feet with a 360-degree swivel, it is the longest cord length stated on any pick here, which helps when the outlet is across the room from the ironing board. A precision tip reaches between buttons, around lapels and around collars, and the 170 ml water tank has an anti-drip system that Sunbeam says keeps ironing mess-free.
Auto shut-off needs a closer read. The title promises “3-Way Auto Shut-Off,” but the feature bullet describes a 30-minute auto-off, and the listing doesn’t explain how the two fit together. Assume the 30-minute figure until you check the manual, and unplug it yourself when you finish. The warranty field lists a lifetime soleplate warranty plus a 3-year limited warranty on the iron, and a bullet repeats the 3-year term.
It suits budget shoppers, dorms and occasional ironers who value a long cord and a long warranty more than strong steam.
Why we like it
- 8-foot swivel cord
- Lifetime soleplate warranty field
- Vertical shot of steam
Watch out for
Its auto-off description conflicts between title and bullets, and the listed weight is a placeholder.
Key Specifications
| Type | Corded steam iron |
|---|---|
| Power | 1200 watts |
| Tank | 170 ml, anti-drip |
| Soleplate | Mid-size nonstick |
| Cord | 8 ft, 360° swivel |
| Size | 5.6 x 11.6 x 6.3 in |
| Listed weight | 0 pounds, a placeholder; treat the weight as not stated. |
| Warranty | Lifetime soleplate + 3 year iron limited warranty |
| Model | 32610005; made by Star Elite Inc. |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #45,972 overall; #51 in Irons (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Warranty is the strongest selling point. The field reads “Lifetime soleplate + 3 year iron limited warranty,” the longest stated term among our picks.
Sunbeam lists “1200 Watts of power for quick heating,” a “POWERFUL SHOT OF STEAM” that “works horizontally or vertically,” a “mid-size nonstick soleplate,” a “water tank 170ml equipped with an Anti-Drip system,” and an “8-foot 360° swivel cord,” the longest cord stated here. Amazon.com is the seller.
Auto-off is muddled. The title promises “3-Way Auto Shut-Off,” but the bullet describes “a 30 minute auto-off feature,” far slower than the Allure’s 30 seconds on its side. The weight field reads 0 pounds, a placeholder. It ranks #51 in Irons and #45,972 overall, and its 1,200 watts ties the Amazon Basics and Steamfast for the lowest.
Occasional ironers who want a long cord and long warranty for little money will be content. Anyone who leans on fast auto-off should choose the Allure.
Pros
- Longest stated cord here: 8 ft, 360° swivel
- Warranty field: lifetime soleplate + 3-year iron limited
- 170 ml tank with anti-drip system
- Horizontal or vertical shot of steam
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Title says “3-Way Auto Shut-Off,” bullet says “30 minute auto-off”
- Listed weight of 0 lb: not stated
- 1,200 W, tied for the lowest here
- Weaker rank: #51 in Irons, #45,972 overall
Best for: A budget buyer who wants a simple iron, a long cord and the longest warranty field on this page.
5. Amazon Basics 1200W Steam Iron: Best Lightweight Basic
Amazon’s house-brand iron is a 1,200-watt corded steam iron with a 10-inch non-stick Teflon soleplate and a 150 ml, or 5 fluid ounce, water tank. The title lists auto shut-off, anti-drip, anti-calcification and a thermostat, and the listing weight of 1.76 pounds makes it the lightest iron on this page.
Daily use is simple. Set the adjustable thermostat for the fabric, pick a steam level, and glide. A spray button mists a small spritz of water onto stubborn wrinkles, and the iron can be held upright for vertical steaming of hanging garments, curtains and drapes. The 360-degree swivel cord is meant to prevent tangling while you switch between the board and vertical steaming.
For safety, the listing mentions overheat safety protection alongside the auto shut-off in the title, though it doesn’t say how long the iron waits before shutting off. The 6.5-foot cord is shorter than the Sunbeam’s, so plan the board near an outlet rather than reaching for an extension cord.
It suits students, small apartments and anyone who irons a shirt or two before work. A small tank means more refills for big loads, and the listing gives no warranty term. If you iron several shirts in one session, keep a cup of water nearby so refilling doesn’t slow you down.
Why we like it
- Lightest iron here
- Vertical steaming
- Anti-drip and anti-calc
Watch out for
Small 150 ml tank, short cord and no stated warranty or shut-off timing.
Key Specifications
| Type | Corded steam iron |
|---|---|
| Power | 1200 watts |
| Tank | 150 ml (5 fl oz) |
| Soleplate | 10 in, non-stick Teflon |
| Cord | 6.5 ft, 360° swivel |
| Size | 9.84 x 4.53 x 5.12 in |
| Listed weight | 1.76 pounds |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
| Model | EC1743C-UL; made by Amazon |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #23 in Irons (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Weight is the first thing to notice: 1.76 pounds listed, the lightest iron here, with “Auto Shut-Off, Anti-Drip, Anti-Calcification, Thermostat” all named in the title.
The listing adds “VERSATILE VERTICAL STEAMING” for “hanging garments, curtains, and drapes,” “overheat safety protection,” a “360-degree swivel cord,” and a “150 ml water tank.” It is 1,200 watts with a 10-inch non-stick Teflon soleplate. It ranks #23 in Irons, though no overall rank is reported, and Amazon.com is the seller.
Its tank is the smallest stated here, 20 ml under the Sunbeam’s, and the 6.5-foot cord is shorter than the Sunbeam’s 8 feet. Auto-off timing isn’t given, and the warranty field is empty.
Light-duty ironers in small homes should be well served. Families with weekly piles of shirts will want a bigger tank and a stated warranty.
Pros
- Lightest listed weight here: 1.76 lb
- Auto shut-off, anti-drip and anti-calcification, per title
- Vertical steaming for hanging garments
- Overheat safety protection, per listing
- #23 in Irons; sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Smallest stated tank here: 150 ml
- Shortest stated cord: 6.5 ft
- Warranty field is empty: not stated
- Auto shut-off timing not stated
Best for: Someone who irons now and then and wants a light, inexpensive iron with the basic safety features listed.
6. Panasonic NI-WL700A Cordless Steam/Dry Iron: Best Cordless
Panasonic’s NI-WL700A is a 1,500-watt cordless steam and dry iron that heats on a power base and then lifts free, so there’s no cord to drag across the shirt. Panasonic says it ends the hassle of twisted, tangled power cords.
The soleplate is the unusual part. Panasonic calls it a 360° Freestyle soleplate: stainless steel, non-stick and contoured with a tip on both ends, so you can iron forward, backward and side to side. The listing says it heats to high temperature in just under 2 minutes.
Cordless has limits, and Panasonic states them. One charge gives about 1 minute of steam ironing or 5 minutes of dry ironing, after which you set the iron back on the base to reheat. In practice, you work in short passes and dock it often. Buttons let you choose heat and steam or no steam, and a vertical steam feature handles curtains and hanging garments. A heat-resistant carrying case snaps onto the iron and base for storage.
It suits people who iron at a board beside the base and like freedom of movement. It also fits closets and small apartments, since the case keeps the iron and base together between uses. The listing does not mention auto shut-off; the warranty field tells buyers to call Panasonic directly.
Why we like it
- Cordless freedom
- Double-tipped soleplate
- Snap-on carrying case
Watch out for
Steam lasts about a minute per charge, and the listing doesn’t mention auto shut-off.
Key Specifications
| Type | Cordless iron with base |
|---|---|
| Power | 1500 watts |
| Per charge | About 1 min steam / 5 min dry (per listing) |
| Soleplate | Stainless steel, non-stick, 360° double-tipped |
| Storage | Heat-resistant carrying case |
| Size | 11.5 x 6.25 x 0.1 in |
| Listed weight | 4.19 pounds |
| Warranty | Consumers should call Panasonic directly with warranty issues 1-800-405-0652. |
| Model | NIWL700A |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #12,213 overall; #27 in Irons (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Cord-free ironing with honest limits: Panasonic lists “1 minute of steam ironing and 5 minutes of dry ironing per charge,” then you “set it back on the base to reheat.”
The “360° Freestyle soleplate” is “stainless steel, non-stick, and contoured” with “a double-tipped design” for ironing “forward, backward, and even side-to-side.” It heats “in just under 2 minutes,” offers “vertical steam,” and has a “heat-resistant carrying case.” It is 1,500 watts, ranks #27 in Irons and #12,213 overall, and Amazon.com sells it.
The listing never mentions auto shut-off, which the Steamfast cordless states at 8 minutes. The size field’s 0.1-inch height is a placeholder, and the listed 4.19-pound weight may include the base, so confirm it. The warranty field only says to call Panasonic directly.
People who iron in short sessions beside the base will enjoy the freedom. Those ironing large loads, or who want stated auto-off, should pick a corded iron.
Pros
- No cord on the iron itself
- 360° Freestyle soleplate with two tips
- Heats in just under 2 minutes, per listing
- Vertical steam and dry ironing
- Heat-resistant carrying case
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Only about 1 minute of steam per charge, per listing
- Auto shut-off not mentioned
- Listed size height of 0.1 in is clearly wrong
- #27 in Irons, #12,213 overall
Best for: A person who hates cord drag and irons in short bursts, returning the iron to its base often.
7. Steamfast SF-760 Portable Cordless Steam Iron: Best Travel Iron
Steamfast’s SF-760 is a 1,200-watt cordless steam iron that comes with its own carrying case, which the brand pitches for travel and for home storage. The listing calls it lightweight and easy to handle and says it removes wrinkles from clothes, linens and garments without tangled cords.
You can run it as a traditional dry iron or switch to steam, with spray mist, burst steam and vertical steam for hanging garments. Adjustable temperature control lets you work from delicate garments to tough linens, according to Steamfast, and an included measuring cup makes refilling the tank easier.
For safety, the SF-760 shuts off automatically if it sits idle for 8 minutes. One detail matters for travelers: Steamfast says it is built to meet U.S. voltage requirements and is warrantied for use only in the U.S., so it isn’t a fit for trips abroad. The listing doesn’t say how long it runs or steams between returns to its base.
It suits road trips within the country, college dorms and closets where a full-size iron and board feel like too much. Because there is no cord on the iron, you can press a shirt on a towel-covered counter or a travel board without hunting for an outlet right beside you. The warranty field lists a 2-year manufacturer warranty.
Why we like it
- Packs into its own case
- 8-minute idle auto-off
- Dry and steam modes
Watch out for
Built for U.S. voltage only, and the listing gives no run time per charge.
Key Specifications
| Type | Portable cordless iron with case |
|---|---|
| Power | 1200 watts |
| Auto-off | After 8 minutes idle |
| Modes | Dry, spray mist, burst, vertical steam |
| Included | Carrying case, measuring cup |
| Size | 11.2 x 6 x 7.4 in |
| Listed weight | 3 pounds |
| Warranty | 2 year manufacturer |
| Model | SF-760 |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #82,525 overall; #65 in Irons (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Packability defines it. Steamfast includes a “unique carrying case for travel or home storage” and a “measuring cup” with this cordless 1,200-watt iron.
Modes include dry ironing plus “spray mist, burst steam, or vertical steam.” Safety comes from “an automatic shut-off that powers down the iron if left idle for 8 minutes,” a stated auto-off the Panasonic cordless lacks. The warranty field reads “2 year manufacturer,” and Amazon.com is the seller. Listed weight is 3 pounds.
Two caveats. Steamfast says it is “warrantied for use only in the U.S.” and built for U.S. voltage, so it isn’t an international travel iron. The listing gives no run time per charge, while Panasonic states one. At #65 in Irons and #82,525 overall, it has the weakest rank here.
Domestic travelers, dorm residents and small-space renters should consider it. International travelers and heavy-duty ironers should look elsewhere.
Pros
- Cordless design with carrying case
- Auto-off after 8 minutes idle
- Dry, spray mist, burst and vertical steam
- Adjustable temperature; 1,200 W
- Warranty field: “2 year manufacturer”
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Weakest rank here: #65 in Irons, #82,525 overall
- Listing says for use only in the U.S.
- Steam or run time per charge not stated
- Tank size not stated
Best for: A traveler or apartment dweller who wants a cordless iron that packs into its own case for trips within the U.S.
How We Chose the Best Steam Irons
We compared Amazon listings, specs and sales ranks, and we quote only what each listing says:
- Auto shut-off: whether it is stated, and the timing or positions when the listing gives them.
- Steam and power: wattage, steam boost and vertical steam, as listed.
- Soleplate: stainless steel, nonstick or ceramic, and steam-hole counts.
- Anti-drip and anti-calc: features that protect fabrics and the iron.
- Cord or cordless: stated cord length, swivel and cordless run time.
- Seller and stock: every pick was in stock and sold by Amazon.com. We chose two different Rowenta lines and one model from every other brand.

Steam Iron Buying Guide
Best Steam Iron With Auto Shut Off: Read the Timing
“Auto-off” covers a lot of ground. The BLACK+DECKER Allure gives exact timing: 30 seconds on its side or soleplate, 8 minutes on its heel. The Steamfast shuts off after 8 minutes idle, and the Sunbeam bullet says 30 minutes, even though its title says 3-way. The Rowenta Focus Excel and Amazon Basics state auto-off without timing. The Rowenta Steam Force Pro and Panasonic cordless listings don’t mention it at all. Whatever the listing says, unplug the iron when you finish.
Best Iron for Clothes: Soleplate and Steam
Stainless steel soleplates appear on the Allure, the Steam Force Pro and the Panasonic. The Sunbeam and Amazon Basics use nonstick plates, the Amazon Basics specifically Teflon. More steam holes spread steam more evenly, per Rowenta, which lists over 400 on the Focus Excel. Anti-drip systems, listed on both Rowentas, the Sunbeam and the Amazon Basics, are meant to prevent leaks and water stains, per the listings.

Best Cordless Iron: Short Bursts, Not Marathons
Cordless irons heat on a base and lose heat as you work. Panasonic is upfront: about 1 minute of steam or 5 minutes of dry ironing per charge, then back to the base. The Steamfast listing doesn’t give a run time. Cordless suits short sessions and tight spaces; corded irons suit big baskets of laundry.
Best Rowenta Iron: Focus Excel or Steam Force Pro?
The Focus Excel has the stronger rank, a stated auto-off and a 135 g/min steam boost at a mid-range price. The Steam Force Pro adds 1,850 watts, a pump, a steam trigger and five electronic presets, but its listing says there’s no vertical steam and doesn’t mention auto-off. Most households will be happier with the Focus Excel.

Best Travel Iron and Vertical Steam
The Steamfast SF-760 packs into a carrying case, but its listing limits use to the U.S. For hanging garments, the Sunbeam, Amazon Basics, Panasonic and Steamfast all list vertical steam. The Steam Force Pro says it has none.

Iron Safety: Heat, Cords and Your Home
An iron is a 1,200- to 1,850-watt heater with a cord, per these listings. A few habits keep it that way:
- Unplug when you’re done. The U.S. Fire Administration advises unplugging small appliances when you aren’t using them, and replacing any appliance with a cracked, damaged or loose cord.
- Don’t overload power strips. USFA says not to overload power strips and to use strips with internal overload protection. If you plug in near electronics, our surge protector guide explains what to look for.
- Cool it out of reach. Let a hot iron cool standing where it can’t be pulled down by a dangling cord. The USFA burns page recommends placing objects so they cannot be pulled down or knocked over.
- Back it up. Working smoke alarms and a home fire extinguisher belong in every home with heat-producing appliances.
- Coverage questions. How a policy handles an appliance fire depends on your coverage, so ask your agent. Our Ohio homeowners insurance guide and renters insurance cost guide cover the basics.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best steam iron for most people?
The Rowenta Focus Excel DW5280 is our overall pick. It ranks #2 in Irons, lists over 400 steam holes, a 135 g/min steam boost, auto-off, anti-drip and a self-cleaning function, and Amazon.com sells it.
Which steam iron has the best auto shut off?
The BLACK+DECKER Allure gives the clearest timing: 30 seconds on its side or soleplate and 8 minutes on its heel. The Steamfast SF-760 shuts off after 8 minutes idle. Two of our picks, the Rowenta Steam Force Pro and Panasonic cordless, don’t mention auto-off in their listings.
Are cordless irons any good?
They’re good for short sessions without cord drag. Panasonic lists about 1 minute of steam or 5 minutes of dry ironing per charge on the NI-WL700A, after which it returns to its base to reheat. For big loads, a corded iron is simpler.
What is the best travel iron?
The Steamfast SF-760 is cordless and comes with a carrying case and measuring cup. Steamfast says it is built for U.S. voltage and warrantied for use only in the U.S., so it isn’t meant for international trips.
Which Rowenta iron should I buy?
For most people, the Focus Excel: a better sales rank, stated auto-off and a lower price tier. The Steam Force Pro adds 1,850 watts and electronic presets, but its listing says it has no vertical steam and doesn’t mention auto-off.
The Bottom Line
The Rowenta Focus Excel is the best steam iron for most homes: strong steam, auto-off, anti-drip and the best rank here. The BLACK+DECKER Allure spells out its shut-off timing at a lower price, the Sunbeam Classic and Amazon Basics cover tight budgets, the Steam Force Pro brings the most power, and the Panasonic and Steamfast cut the cord.
