Butane Wand, Electric Arc or Long Match? Best Fireplace Lighter Picks With Real Reach

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. This doesn’t change our recommendations or the price you pay.

The best fireplace lighter keeps your hand well back from the kindling, lights on the first try, and is hard for a small child to work. That sounds simple, but long lighters vary a lot: disposable butane wands, refillable and reloadable models, flexible gas matches, battery-powered arc lighters with no flame at all, and plain 11-inch wooden matches.

We compared seven options from BIC, Camco, NEON, MK Lighter, XJB YFC and FryOilSaver, each in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store when we checked. For each one we quote the stated reach, the child-resistance wording, how it refuels or recharges and any wind claim exactly as the listing gives them, and we flag the gaps, such as wand lengths that are never stated.

One rule applies to all of them: a lighter is a tool for adults. Store it where children can’t reach it, and treat it as part of your fireplace safety routine, not a toy on the mantel.

1. BIC Multi-Purpose Classic Edition 4-Pack: Best Overall

BIC Multi-Purpose Classic Edition 4-Pack

BIC’s Classic Edition Multi-Purpose lighter is the familiar long utility lighter: a plastic handle with a trigger, a long metal wand, and a flame at the tip. This listing is a four-pack, which is enough to keep one by the fireplace, one at the grill and a couple in a high kitchen drawer.

Day to day, you hold it like a pistol, slide or press the child-resistant control, and pull the trigger to light kindling or a fire starter without putting your fingers near the firebox. BIC says the long durable metal wand “helps keep fingers away from flame,” and it names grills, fireplaces and candles as uses. The listing doesn’t give the wand length, so if reach matters for a deep firebox, plan to measure one when it arrives.

On safety, BIC says each lighter is “child-resistant*,” safe and 100% quality inspected, and that every BIC stick lighter undergoes more than 50 separate automatic quality checks during manufacturing. The asterisk points to a footnote that isn’t reproduced in the bullets; on BIC’s other multi-purpose listings it reads that no lighter is child-proof. The listing doesn’t describe these as refillable, so expect to replace each one when it runs out of fuel.

It suits most homes with a wood-burning fireplace that want a simple, familiar lighter in several rooms, and anyone who would rather not deal with butane cans or USB charging cables.

Why we like it

  • Four lighters in one pack
  • Child-resistant per the listing
  • Familiar trigger design

Watch out for

The wand length isn’t stated, and these are disposable, so you’ll be buying replacements rather than refilling.

SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#779 overall; #1 in Lighters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Sales lead the case: this four-pack ranks #1 in Lighters and #779 overall, far ahead of every other pick here (the NEON is next at #7,203). Amazon.com is the seller, and four lighters in one pack make it easy to keep one in every room with a flame.

BIC’s bullets promise a “long durable metal wand” that “helps keep fingers away from flame – great for grills, fireplaces and candles,” and say each lighter is “child-resistant*, safe and 100% quality inspected,” with “more than 50 separate, automatic quality checks.” That child-resistant wording is stronger than the EZ Load’s “safety tested,” though less specific than NEON’s CPSC compliance statement or Camco’s “CPSC certified.”

Gaps are worth noting. The wand length isn’t stated, while Camco, MK, NEON and XJB YFC all give a number. The warranty field is empty, and the model field reads 640265655388, which looks like a barcode rather than a model number. The listed 13.5 x 1 x 11 inches and 0.95 pounds describe the four-pack. Nothing says it’s refillable.

Households wanting a familiar, child-resistant long lighter at a low price should start here. Owners of very deep fireboxes, or anyone set on refilling rather than replacing, will be better served by the Camco or NEON.

Pros

  • Best rank here: #1 in Lighters, #779 overall
  • Listing: “child-resistant*” and “100% quality inspected”
  • Long durable metal wand, per BIC
  • Four lighters per pack
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Wand length not stated
  • Not described as refillable
  • Warranty field empty
  • Model field shows a barcode-style number, not a model

Best for: A household that wants a few reliable, child-resistant long lighters to keep by the fireplace, grill and candles.

2. BIC EZ Load Reloadable Multi-Purpose Lighter, 2-Pack: Best Reloadable Long Lighter

BIC EZ Load Reloadable Multi-Purpose Lighter, 2-Pack

The BIC EZ Load takes a different approach to the refill problem. Instead of filling a long lighter with butane, you load a BIC Maxi Pocket Lighter into a long reusable shell, and when that pocket lighter runs dry you swap in another. BIC calls it the brand’s “first reloadable long lighter.”

The pack includes two EZ Load shells and two BIC Maxi Pocket Lighters, so you can start using both right away. BIC says you can reload the EZ Load up to 10 times with BIC Maxi Pocket Lighters, which keeps the long shell in service while only the small lighter inside is used up. No butane can, no refill valve and no charging cable are involved.

For everyday fireplace use, the shell gives you the reach of a utility lighter for kindling, candles, grills and campfires, which BIC lists as uses. On safety, the listing says each BIC utility lighter is “100% safety tested and meets or exceeds safety standards.” The bullets don’t name a child-resistant mechanism or give the shell’s length, so check the packaging if either matters to you. The listed size is 1.38 by 7 by 7 inches at 0.65 pounds for the pack.

It suits households that already buy BIC pocket lighters and want a long lighter for the fireplace that creates less waste than tossing disposable wands.

Why we like it

  • Reusable long shell
  • No butane cans to handle
  • Two shells in the pack

Watch out for

The bullets say “safety tested” rather than child-resistant and don’t state the reach, so confirm both on the package.

SellerThe Official BIC Store
Best Sellers Rank#78,542 overall; #284 in Lighters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Reloading is the whole idea. BIC calls the EZ Load its “first reloadable long lighter,” and says you can “Reload the BIC EZ Load up to 10 times with BIC Maxi Pocket Lighters.” The box includes “2 BIC EZ Load Shells and 2 BIC Maxi Pocket Lighters.”

Compared with the refillable NEON, MK and Camco, there’s no butane can to buy and no refill valve to manage; compared with the disposable BIC Classic, the long shell stays in service. The safety bullet reads “100% safety tested and meets or exceeds safety standards,” but unlike the BIC Classic, NEON, MK and Camco listings it never uses the word “child-resistant,” so check the packaging.

Evidence is thinner than on the BIC Classic. It ranks #78,542 overall and #284 in Lighters, ahead of only the XJB YFC here. The seller is The Official BIC Store, the warranty field is empty, and the listed 1.38 x 7 x 7 inches and 0.65 pounds describe the pack rather than the shell length, which isn’t given.

Pocket-lighter users who want a long reach for the hearth with less waste will like the system. Shoppers who want a stated reach or explicit child-resistant wording should pick the BIC Classic or NEON instead.

Pros

  • Reloads up to 10 times with BIC Maxi Pocket Lighters, per BIC
  • Comes with 2 shells and 2 Maxi pocket lighters
  • Sold by The Official BIC Store
  • Listing: “100% safety tested”

Cons

  • Bullets don’t use the words “child-resistant”
  • Reach not stated
  • Warranty field empty
  • Weak rank here: #78,542 overall

Best for: Someone who goes through long lighters quickly and wants to reload a reusable shell instead of throwing the whole lighter away.

3. Camco Olympian GM-3X Gas Match: Longest Butane Reach

Camco Olympian GM-3X Gas Match

Camco’s Olympian GM-3X is a refillable gas match built for reach. Camco says it measures 26 inches long in total and includes a 15-inch flex extender, so you can bend the tip around a grate or reach the back of a firebox, a fire pit or a camp grill without leaning in.

It burns butane, which Camco says is sold separately, and it uses a single AA battery for ignition, which is included. In practice, that means buying a can of butane with it and filling the lighter before the first use. The flame is adjustable, and Camco describes it as a windproof, continuous flame that won’t blow out, which helps on a drafty hearth or outdoors.

The safety lock is designed to help prevent accidental ignition, and the listing says the lighter is “CPSC certified, complying with all applicable children’s product safety rules.” Camco markets it for RVing, car camping, boating, camping grills and fire pits as well as home use. The listed package size is 17.9 by 7.1 by 1.4 inches at 0.79 pounds, and the warranty field reads Limited 1 Year.

It suits fireplace owners who struggle to reach kindling at the back of a deep box, and anyone who wants one lighter for the hearth, the fire pit and the camper.

Why we like it

  • Longest flame reach on this list
  • Bendable 15-inch extender
  • Adjustable windproof flame

Watch out for

Budget for butane and an occasional AA battery, and expect it to cost more up front than a multi-pack of disposable wands.

Key Specifications

TypeRefillable butane gas match, flex extender

Listed weight0.79 pounds
WarrantyLimited 1 Year
Model57549
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#20,928 overall; #2 in Cooktop & Ranges (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Twenty-six inches is the number that matters: Camco says the GM-3X “is 26″ long (total length) and includes a 15″ long flex extender.” That’s the longest reach of any flame lighter on this page, behind only the extended XJB YFC arc lighter.

Its safety wording is the most specific among the butane picks: “CPSC certified, complying with all applicable children’s product safety rules,” plus a “safety lock to help prevent accidental ignition.” Camco also describes a “windproof, continuous flame that won’t blow out,” a claim MK explicitly doesn’t make for its lighter. The flame is adjustable.

Running costs are higher. It “uses butane lighter fluid (sold separately) and is powered by a single AA battery (included).” It’s the priciest pick, and Amazon ranks it #20,928 overall and #2 in Cooktop & Ranges, an odd category for a lighter. On the plus side, it’s the only pick with a filled warranty field, “Limited 1 Year,” and Amazon.com sells it. The listed package is 17.9 x 7.1 x 1.4 inches at 0.79 pounds.

Anyone with a deep firebox, a fire pit or an RV should put it at the top of the list. Budget buyers lighting a shallow hearth will do fine with the BIC Classic four-pack for much less.

Pros

  • 26 inches total with a 15-inch flex extender, per Camco
  • Adjustable flame and safety lock
  • Listing: “CPSC certified for child safety”
  • Only warranty field filled here: “Limited 1 Year”
  • Sold by Amazon.com

Cons

  • Butane sold separately
  • Needs an AA battery (one included)
  • Priciest pick here
  • Ranked in Cooktop & Ranges, #20,928 overall

Best for: A homeowner with a deep firebox, a fire pit or an RV who wants the longest flame-based reach on this list and doesn’t mind buying butane.

4. XJB YFC Retractable Arc Lighter With Display: Best Rechargeable Arc Lighter

XJB YFC Retractable Arc Lighter With Display

This XJB YFC lighter makes no flame at all. Instead, it produces an electric arc at the tip, powered by a battery you recharge over USB, according to the title. You press the arc against paper, a fire starter or a candle wick and it catches. There is no butane to buy or refill.

Reach is its standout. XJB YFC says the retractable design extends from 14.18 to 43.31 inches, which lets you light kindling at the back of a firebox or under a grate while standing well back. A built-in LED light brightens dark spots in fireplaces, grills and gas stoves, and a digital screen shows the remaining battery level and the total number of ignitions, so you know when to recharge.

For safety, the listing says two separate switches must be turned on before it can ignite, which it says prevents accidental activation, and a 7-second auto power-off shuts it down if you forget. The listed size is 14 by 1 by 1 inches when collapsed; the weight and warranty fields are empty, and the listing doesn’t say which USB port it uses or how many lights a charge gives.

It suits people who dislike handling butane, want a long reach, and are happy to keep one more device charged.

Why we like it

  • Reaches up to 43.31 inches
  • Two-switch safety lock
  • Battery display

Watch out for

An arc needs something easy to ignite, like paper or a starter, and the lighter is useless with a flat battery, so charge it before fire season.

SellerXJB YFC
Best Sellers Rank#105,648 overall; #425 in Lighters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Can a lighter with no flame light a fire? With paper or a starter, yes, and this one reaches further than anything else here: XJB YFC says it “extends from 14.18 to 43.31 inches.” The Camco, at 26 inches, is the next longest.

The safety design is distinct. It “requires two separate switches to be turned on before it can ignite,” and a “7-second auto power-off function” shuts it down. A “built-in digital screen clearly shows the remaining battery level and total ignition count,” and an “integrated LED light brightens dark and hard-to-see areas such as fireplaces.” There’s no butane, unlike the NEON, MK and Camco.

Listing evidence is the thinnest on this page. Its rank, #105,648 overall and #425 in Lighters, is the weakest here. The seller is the brand’s own store, XJB YFC; weight and warranty fields are empty, and the listed size is 14 x 1 x 1 inches. Unlike a sibling XJB YFC listing, this one makes no wind-resistance or charges-per-battery claim, and it doesn’t name the USB port type. Because it burns no fuel, it sits outside the CPSC multi-purpose lighter rule by our reading, so its lock is the maker’s design.

Butane-averse owners with deep fireboxes, and gadget fans who will keep it charged, should consider it. Buyers who want a well-established product with a warranty should look at the Camco or BIC.

Pros

  • Longest stated reach here: 14.18 to 43.31 in
  • Two switches must be on before it ignites
  • 7-second auto power-off
  • Display shows battery level and ignition count
  • Built-in LED light

Cons

  • Weakest rank here: #105,648 overall
  • Weight and warranty fields empty
  • No wind or charge-count claim on this listing
  • Charging port type not stated

Best for: Someone who wants flameless, butane-free lighting with enough reach to get deep into a firebox, and who will keep it charged.

5. NEON Refillable Butane Lighter, 4-Pack: Best Refillable Multi-Pack

NEON Refillable Butane Lighter, 4-Pack

NEON’s refillable lighters are long utility lighters you top up with butane instead of throwing away. Each one has a visible fuel window, so you can see when it’s getting low, and the pack of four arrives pre-filled, according to NEON, so they work out of the box.

The 4.8-inch metal wand is meant to keep your hand away from the flame for grills, fireplaces, gas stoves, lanterns, fire pits and deep jar candles. An adjustment button lets you set the flame size, from a small flame for birthday candles to a larger one for lighting the grill. NEON says it increased the ignition button’s travel to help prevent accidental leaks, and recommends pressing the button slightly slower before firing.

On child safety, the listing says NEON lighters comply with U.S. CPSC child-resistance safety standards and DOT. The safety lock prevents accidental ignition; NEON notes that slight resistance when pressing with the lock on is normal, and that when the lock is off the button can’t be pressed. NEON also says it has made lighters and butane fuel for over 30 years. The listed size is 10.5 by 1.5 by 0.8 inches.

It suits homes that want refillable lighters spread across the fireplace, kitchen and camping gear, and buyers who like being able to see the fuel level.

Why we like it

  • Fuel window shows the level
  • Four refillable lighters
  • Adjustable flame

Watch out for

The 4.8-inch wand is the shortest stated reach on this list, so it’s better for a shallow hearth than a deep firebox.

Model3884
SellerNEON-US
Best Sellers Rank#7,203 overall; #16 in Lighters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Refillable and see-through: “The visible fuel window lets you easily see when it’s time for a refill,” NEON says, and each of the four lighters is “pre-filled with butane fuel.” No other pick on this page has a fuel window.

Its child-safety statement is among the clearest here: “NEON lighters comply with U.S. CPSC child-resistance safety standards and DOT.” NEON adds that “when the lock is off, the ignition button cannot be pressed,” and that “slight resistance when pressing with the lock on is normal.” The flame is adjustable, and NEON says it “increased our lighter ignition button travel” to prevent accidental leaks.

Popularity is solid: #16 in Lighters and #7,203 overall, second only to the BIC Classic. The seller is NEON-US, the brand’s store. Reach is the weak spot: the “4.8in Extended Metal Wand” is the shortest stated length here, well behind MK’s 16 inches overall and Camco’s 26. Weight and warranty fields are empty; the listed size is 10.5 x 1.5 x 0.8 inches.

Homes that want several refillable lighters with clear CPSC wording will find good value in the four-pack. Owners of deep fireboxes should choose the Camco or MK for the extra reach.

Pros

  • Listing: complies with U.S. CPSC child-resistance standards and DOT
  • Visible fuel window
  • Adjustable soft flame
  • Second-best rank here: #16 in Lighters, #7,203 overall
  • Arrives pre-filled, per NEON

Cons

  • Shortest stated reach: 4.8-inch wand
  • Weight and warranty fields empty
  • Soft flame, not a windproof torch
  • Lock adds slight resistance, per NEON

Best for: A household that wants several refillable lighters around the house with a clear fuel window and stated CPSC child-resistance compliance.

6. MK Lighter 9-Inch Flexible Neck, 2-Pack: Best Flexible Neck

MK Lighter 9-Inch Flexible Neck, 2-Pack

MK Lighter’s long lighter pairs a curved handle with a 9-inch neck that bends 360 degrees. MK is careful to explain the numbers: the 9 inches is the neck alone, and the total length including the handle is 16 inches. The pack holds two lighters in a random color combination.

The flexible neck is the practical feature for a fireplace. You can bend the tip down under a grate, around an andiron or into a tight spot in a fire pit while keeping your hand outside the opening. A flame adjustment lets you go from low to high, and MK suggests pressing the ignition button slightly slower for the best ignition and to help prevent leaks.

It is refillable, and MK describes it as a soft-flame lighter, adding plainly that it is not a torch or windproof lighter. That honesty is useful: indoors on a hearth, a soft flame is fine, but on a breezy patio you may need to shield it. The listing describes a child-resistant mechanism and safety lock for use at home, in kitchens and outdoors. The listed size is 13.18 by 1.15 by 1.85 inches.

It suits fireplace owners with a grate or andirons in the way, and anyone who wants a refillable lighter that bends to reach awkward spots.

Why we like it

  • Bends 360° to reach under grates
  • Clear statement of overall length
  • Refillable

Watch out for

MK says it is not windproof, so for outdoor fire pits on windy nights, a windproof gas match is the better tool.

ModelA-8BL-OD-2PC- B; made by MK Lighter
SellerMK Lighter
Best Sellers Rank#32,985 overall; #99 in Lighters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Flexibility sets the MK apart: a “9-Inch Extra-Long & 360° Flexible Neck” that MK says reaches “candles, BBQ grills, fire pits, stoves, and campfires.” Only the Camco’s 15-inch flex extender also bends, and the Camco costs more.

MK is unusually candid about two things. The “9-inch measurement refers to the extended neck length only,” with a “total overall length” of 16 inches. And it’s “a standard flame lighter, not a torch or windproof lighter,” where Camco claims a windproof flame. The listing describes a “Child-Resistant Safety Lock,” an adjustable flame and a refillable design.

It ranks #32,985 overall and #99 in Lighters, mid-pack among these picks. The seller is MK Lighter, the brand’s store. Weight and warranty fields are empty, the listed size is 13.18 x 1.15 x 1.85 inches, and the two-pack comes in a “Random Color Combo.” MK also advises pressing the button “slightly slower” to help prevent leaks.

Hearths with grates or andirons in the way are where this lighter earns its place. Anyone lighting fire pits in the wind should take MK at its word and pick the Camco.

Pros

  • 9-inch flexible neck, 16 inches overall, per MK
  • 360° flexible neck
  • Child-resistant safety lock, per listing
  • Adjustable, refillable flame
  • Sold by MK Lighter

Cons

  • Listing says it’s not windproof
  • Weight and warranty fields empty
  • Colors are random
  • #32,985 overall

Best for: A fireplace owner who needs to angle the flame under a grate or around andirons and wants a refillable lighter with a stated child-resistant lock.

7. FryOilSaver 11-Inch Safety Matches, 50 Count: Best Fireplace Matches

FryOilSaver 11-Inch Safety Matches, 50 Count

Long fireplace matches are the oldest answer on this list, and FryOilSaver’s 11-inch wooden safety matches cover the basics: 50 extra-long matchsticks in a box with a strike pad. There is nothing to refill, charge or break.

The brand says the added length keeps hands away from the flame and offers a more controlled lighting experience, and it lists fireplaces, fire pits, grills, candles, furnaces and stoves among the uses. Because they are box-strike rather than strike-anywhere matches, they light only on the strike pad, which the listing says prevents accidental ignition from friction and makes them safer to store and carry.

FryOilSaver says the matchsticks are made with environmentally responsible materials and that the matchbox is designed to burn completely when placed in the fire. The listed size is 11.5 by 2 by 2 inches at 0.25 pounds, and the model is M-6150. Each match is single use, so a box of 50 is about 50 fires if every one lights the first time.

They suit people who keep a box by the hearth as a reliable backup for the night a lighter runs dry, and anyone who would rather not have butane or a lithium battery stored near the fireplace. Keep the box closed and dry between fires, because box-strike matches light only on the pad, and a damp pad can make them hard to strike.

Why we like it

  • Nothing to refill or charge
  • Box-strike safety design
  • Box can go in the fire

Watch out for

Matches have no child-resistant mechanism, so storage out of children’s reach matters even more than with a lighter.

Key Specifications

ModelM-6150; made by The FryOilSaver Co.
SellerFry Oil Saver Company
Best Sellers Rank#23,599 overall; #13 in Matches (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Simplicity is the appeal. FryOilSaver’s box holds “50 extra-long wooden matches,” each 11 inches, with nothing to refill, charge or replace except the box itself. That makes it the only pick here with no butane and no battery.

The safety story is the box-strike design: “Unlike strike-anywhere matches, this design prevents accidental ignition from friction, making them safer to store and transport,” the brand says. FryOilSaver also says “the matchbox is designed to burn completely when placed in the fire.” Matches are specifically excluded from the CPSC multi-purpose lighter rule, though, so there’s no child-resistant mechanism like the BIC, NEON, MK and Camco listings describe.

The listing evidence is decent: #13 in Matches and #23,599 overall. The seller is Fry Oil Saver Company, the brand’s own store, and the model is M-6150. The listed size is 11.5 x 2 x 2 inches at 0.25 pounds, and the warranty field is empty. At 11 inches, the reach beats NEON’s 4.8-inch wand but falls well short of the Camco or XJB YFC.

Keep a box as the dependable backup by the hearth, or as your main method if you like lighting fires the traditional way. Homes with young children who might reach the mantel should favor a child-resistant lighter instead.

Pros

  • 11-inch matchsticks, 50 per box
  • Box-strike design, not strike-anywhere
  • Matchbox designed to burn in the fire, per the brand
  • #13 in Matches, #23,599 overall

How We Chose the Best Fireplace Lighters

We kept to long-reach lighters and matches that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store, left out the fire starters covered in our fireplace wood and kindling guide, and compared what each listing actually says:

  • Reach: the stated wand, neck or total length, flagged where a listing leaves it out.
  • Child resistance: the exact wording, from “child-resistant” to “CPSC certified,” and listings that say neither.
  • Fuel or power: disposable, refillable butane, reloadable shell, USB-rechargeable arc, or a box of matches.
  • Wind and flame: windproof claims, adjustable flames and listings that say a lighter isn’t windproof.
  • Seller, rank and gaps: who sells it, Amazon sales rank, the warranty field and empty or odd fields.

Fireplace Lighter Buying Guide

Best Lighter for Fireplace Use: Reach Comes First

A fireplace is deeper than a candle jar, and kindling usually sits under a grate. More reach means less leaning into the opening. Among our picks, the XJB YFC arc lighter extends to a stated 43.31 inches, the Camco gas match measures 26 inches in total, and the MK Lighter is 16 inches overall. The FryOilSaver matches are 11 inches and the NEON wand is 4.8 inches. Neither BIC listing states a length, so measure one before relying on it for a deep firebox.

Child-Resistant Lighters and the CPSC Rule

The CPSC’s Safety Standard for Multi-Purpose Lighters (16 CFR Part 1212) covers products it says are also known as grill lighters, fireplace lighters, utility lighters, micro-torches or gas matches, and it applies to those made in or imported into the U.S. on or after December 22, 2000. It requires them to resist successful operation by at least 85% of a test panel of children, with the purpose of making them resistant to children younger than 5. The standard defines these as hand-held, flame-producing products that operate on fuel, and it says matches are not multi-purpose lighters. By our reading, a battery arc lighter doesn’t fit that fuel-based definition either, so its two-switch lock is the maker’s own design rather than a CPSC-tested feature. No lighter is child-proof, as BIC’s own listings note.

Refillable, Reloadable or Rechargeable?

Disposable wands like the BIC Classic are simplest: use it up, replace it. Refillable butane lighters such as the NEON, MK and Camco take a can of butane; the NEON’s fuel window shows the level, and the Camco also needs an AA battery for ignition. The BIC EZ Load avoids butane cans entirely by reloading with a BIC Maxi Pocket Lighter, up to 10 times per BIC. The XJB YFC arc lighter charges over USB and shows its battery level on a display.

Wind Resistance and Flame Type

Indoors on a hearth, a soft flame does the job. Outdoors, a breeze can snuff it. Camco describes the GM-3X’s flame as windproof and continuous, while MK states that its lighter is a standard soft-flame lighter, “not a torch or windproof lighter.” An electric arc has no flame to blow out, but it needs something easy to ignite, such as newspaper or a fire starter, pressed against the tip.

Long Fireplace Matches vs. a Lighter

Matches need no fuel or charging and can’t leak, which makes them a dependable backup. The trade-offs are single use, a strike pad that must stay dry, and no child-resistant mechanism. Box-strike matches like the FryOilSaver light only on the box, which the brand says prevents accidental ignition from friction.

Lighting a Gas Fireplace

Gas fireplaces, gas logs and inserts are a different job from a wood fire. Many have their own ignition, and those that are lit by hand have a specific sequence for the gas valve and pilot. Follow the manufacturer’s lighting instructions for your unit exactly, use only the method they describe, and if you smell gas, don’t light anything; leave and call your gas utility from outside.

Fireplace Safety: Lighters, Kids and the Hearth

The U.S. Fire Administration’s fire safety page for children says never to leave cigarette lighters or matches where children can reach them, and never to play with lighters or matches in front of your children, because they may copy what they see. Keep every lighter on this list, and especially matches, in a high cabinet or a locked drawer, not on the mantel.

  • Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure the fire is out, or safely behind a screen and doors, before you leave the room or go to bed.
  • Three feet of clearance. USFA’s heating fire safety page says to keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from heat sources, including fireplaces, and to have chimneys cleaned and inspected each year by a professional.
  • Screen and tools. A sturdy screen stops sparks once the fire catches; see our fireplace screen guide, and keep a poker and a lidded ash bucket handy with a set from our fireplace tool set guide.
  • Rechargeable lighters. If your arc lighter uses a lithium-ion battery, USFA’s battery safety page says to stop using lithium-ion batteries if you notice an odor, a change in color or shape, too much heat, leaking or odd noises, and not to charge them below 32°F or above 105°F.
  • Butane. Refill lighters outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, away from the fireplace and any flame, and store spare butane where children can’t reach it.

Fireplace Fires and Your Home Insurance

A fire that starts at the hearth, whether from a spark on the rug or a child who found a lighter, can damage far more than the fireplace. Homeowners policies generally cover sudden fire damage, but limits, deductibles and the way a claim is handled vary, and an annual chimney inspection is the kind of upkeep that supports a smooth claim. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best lighter for a fireplace?

For most homes, the BIC Multi-Purpose Classic Edition 4-Pack. It ranks #1 in Amazon’s Lighters category, its listing says each lighter is child-resistant, and its long metal wand is pitched for fireplaces, grills and candles. For more reach, the Camco GM-3X measures 26 inches in total.

Are fireplace lighters required to be child-resistant?

Yes, for fuel-burning multi-purpose lighters. The CPSC standard at 16 CFR Part 1212 covers fireplace, grill and utility lighters and gas matches made or imported since December 22, 2000, and requires them to resist operation by at least 85% of a children’s test panel. Matches are excluded.

Are electric arc lighters safe for lighting a fireplace?

They can work well with paper or a fire starter. The XJB YFC model lists a two-switch safety lock and a 7-second auto power-off. Treat its battery with care: USFA says to stop using a lithium-ion battery that smells, swells, leaks or gets too hot.

How long should a fireplace lighter be?

Long enough to reach kindling without leaning into the opening. On our list, stated reach runs from a 4.8-inch wand on the NEON to 26 inches for the Camco and up to 43.31 inches for the extended XJB YFC arc lighter.

Are long fireplace matches better than a lighter?

They’re a good backup: no fuel, no charging and nothing to leak. FryOilSaver’s 11-inch matches are box-strike, which the brand says prevents accidental ignition from friction. They’re single use and have no child-resistant mechanism, so store them out of reach.

The Bottom Line

For most fireplaces, the BIC Multi-Purpose Classic Edition 4-Pack is the best fireplace lighter to start with: popular, child-resistant per its listing and easy to keep in several rooms. The BIC EZ Load cuts waste without butane cans, the Camco GM-3X gives the longest flame reach, and the XJB YFC arc lighter goes flameless with the most reach of all. The NEON four-pack adds refillable lighters with a fuel window, the MK Lighter bends under grates, and FryOilSaver matches make a no-fuel backup. Whichever you choose, store it out of children’s reach and never leave a fire unattended.
