Magnet, Hook or Cord: Best LED Work Light for Garages, Crawl Spaces and Outages

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. This doesn’t change our recommendations or the price you pay.

The best LED work light is the one that stays put where you need it: stuck to a fender, hanging from a joist in the crawl space, or standing on the garage floor throwing light across the whole bay. Brightness matters, but so do the magnet, the hook, the battery and whether a cord will reach.

We compared six work lights, each in stock and sold by the brand’s own Amazon store: four pocket-size magnetic lights (three sold as twin packs), a long under-hood light bar and a corded flood light. Every one landed in the same budget price tier, so the real choice is about form and features, not cost.

For each pick we quote the lumens, runtime, IP rating and warranty claims exactly as the listing states them, and we flag fields the listing leaves blank. Brightness numbers are the brands’ own claims, not our measurements. Further down, you’ll find a buying guide and a short section on cords, GFCIs and lithium-ion charging.

1. Ruboliy Magnetic Work Light, 2-Pack: Best Overall

Ruboliy Magnetic Work Light, 2-Pack

Ruboliy’s magnetic work light comes as a pair of compact, foldable lights built around a COB light strip. Each one has a magnetic base, so you can stick it to a car body, a steel shelf or a metal door frame, then rotate and fold the head to aim the beam. Ruboliy says the strip delivers up to 1,500 lumens.

Day to day, the controls are simple. The listing describes seven modes: high, medium and low brightness, strobe, SOS, a top spotlight and a top red strobe. To switch off, you long-press for three seconds, or, per the listing, “single-click to turn off 10s after lighting up,” which saves cycling through every mode. A digital display shows the real-time battery level, so you can see how much light is left before you crawl under something.

The battery is built in and non-detachable. Ruboliy claims five to six hours at maximum brightness and longer on lower settings, but it doesn’t list the battery’s capacity. The body is all-aluminum alloy, which the brand says helps with impact resistance and heat dissipation over long sessions, and every unit gets pre-shipping testing, according to the listing.

It suits homeowners and DIYers who want a pair of general-purpose lights: one for the garage or car, one for the junk drawer or emergency kit. Ruboliy lists car repairs, electrical checks, camping, barbecues and emergencies as uses.

Why we like it

  • Two lights in the box
  • Battery display at a glance
  • Red strobe and SOS modes

Watch out for

The listing names no IP rating and no battery capacity, so treat it as a dry-location light and expect to replace the whole unit when the battery wears out.

SellerRuboliy Direct
Best Sellers Rank#4,243 overall; #6 in Job Site Lighting (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Popularity leads the case: Ruboliy’s two-pack ranks #6 in Job Site Lighting and #4,243 overall, the best rank on this page, ahead of FIBRAVE’s #8. It’s sold by Ruboliy Direct, the brand’s own store.

The listing promises “up to 1500 lumens” from “a top-grade COB light strip” and “7 modes (high, medium, and low brightness, strobe, SOS, top spotlight, top red strobe),” the most modes here. A “clear digital display” shows battery level, a more precise readout than the indicator lights on the HOTLIGH and CARELITE. The body is “all-aluminum alloy.”

Gaps are worth noting. The battery is “non-detachable,” its capacity isn’t stated, and the warranty and weight fields are empty. Runtime is “5-6 hours at max brightness,” close to JINLITE’s “up to 6 hours.” No IP rating appears, unlike the IP65 CARELITE or IP54 JINLITE. The listed size is 2.04 x 6.29 x 3.54 inches.

Homeowners who want two all-round lights for the garage and emergency drawer should start here. Anyone working in rain or dust should look at the CARELITE or JINLITE, which state ratings.

Pros

  • Best rank here: #6 in Job Site Lighting, #4,243 overall
  • Listing claims up to 1,500 lumens from a COB strip
  • Digital display shows battery level
  • 7 modes, including SOS and a red strobe
  • All-aluminum alloy body, per the listing

Cons

  • Battery is non-detachable
  • Battery capacity not stated
  • Weight and warranty fields empty
  • No IP rating stated

Best for: A homeowner who wants two bright, magnetic lights for car work, repairs and the emergency drawer.

2. FIBRAVE Rechargeable Work Light, 2-Pack: Best Value Twin Pack

FIBRAVE Rechargeable Work Light, 2-Pack

FIBRAVE’s rechargeable work light is a slim, foldable mechanic’s light sold as a pair, each with its own USB charging cable. The grooved handle is made of hard rubber that the brand describes as anti-sweat and anti-slip, so it stays in your grip with or without work gloves, and the head is aluminum.

FIBRAVE says the LEDs put out 1,200 lumens of white light. The modes are high and low white light, a front white light, and steady or flashing red; you hold the button for three seconds to bring up the red warning lights, which is handy for a roadside stop. The brand says the aluminum head keeps it running without overheating.

Positioning is where it earns its keep. The head rotates 360°, the base is magnetic, and a foldable metal hook lets you hang it from a shelf, a vehicle or a rafter. Folded, the listing puts it at 5.8 inches long and 4.9 ounces per light, small enough for a toolbelt pocket. FIBRAVE doesn’t state battery capacity or runtime anywhere on the listing.

It suits anyone who wants a primary and a backup light at a low cost: one in the car, one in the house, or one for the tent and another for tasks, as FIBRAVE suggests. The listing also pitches it as a gift for mechanics and dads.

Why we like it

  • Hook and magnet on every light
  • Small enough for a pocket
  • Two-year warranty field

Watch out for

With no stated runtime or battery size, you won’t know how long it lasts on high until you use it, so keep it topped up before outages.

ModelGZD-001
SellerFIBRAVE-US
Best Sellers Rank#5,612 overall; #8 in Job Site Lighting (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Two years: that’s what FIBRAVE’s warranty field says (“manufacturer warranty for 2 years from date of purchase”), the longest stated in any warranty field here. FIBRAVE-US, the brand’s store, sells it.

Each light claims “1200 Lumens white light,” with “High/Low white light+Front white light+Steady Red/Flashing Red modes.” Mounting is versatile: a “360° rotating head with stable magnetic base and foldable metal hook.” It “Folds to 5.8″” and weighs “4.9 oz each,” the lightest per-light weight stated on the page. By our math, two lights come to about 0.61 lb, close to the 0.59 lb weight field, so that field likely covers the pair.

It ranks #8 in Job Site Lighting and #5,612 overall, second only to the Ruboliy. The weak spot is battery data: no capacity and no runtime, where JINLITE, HOTLIGH and CARELITE all state both. There’s no IP rating, and the listing title doesn’t include the brand name.

Shoppers who want a cheap primary-plus-backup pair with hooks will be well served. If you need to know runtime before a storm, the CARELITE’s stated 3–12 hours is the safer bet.

Pros

  • Warranty field: 2 years from date of purchase
  • #8 in Job Site Lighting, #5,612 overall
  • Magnetic base plus foldable metal hook
  • 4.9 oz per light, folds to 5.8 in, per the listing
  • Steady and flashing red modes

Cons

  • Battery capacity and runtime not stated
  • No IP rating stated
  • Listing title omits the brand name
  • No power-bank output stated

Best for: A budget shopper who wants two light, hook-and-magnet lights for the car, toolbox and emergency kit.

3. PacoLit 10000LM LED Work Light: Best Corded Flood for the Garage

PacoLit 10000LM LED Work Light

PacoLit’s 10000LM work light is a corded flood light: a square, cast-aluminum head with a tempered glass lens, a carry handle and a five-foot power cord. Instead of sticking to a fender, it sits on the floor or a bench, or hangs from its handle, and lights a whole area at once. The title claims 10,000 lumens from 72 LEDs.

PacoLit contrasts it with traditional halogen work lights, saying its LEDs “can save up to 80% of the electricity energy.” The brand describes a heat dissipation design, a beam angle of up to 120° and coverage of “up to 3000²ft,” and says the matte lens reduces glare. You can adjust the angle of the head to point light where you need it, and an anti-slip foam handle makes it easy to carry or hang.

For weather, the listing states IP66 waterproofing across the housing, frame and connecting parts, and says it can be used indoors or outdoors, even exposed to rain or snow. PacoLit says that if any issues arise within two years of purchase, it will replace the product.

It suits garage owners, renovation projects and anyone lighting a driveway, patio or construction area, where a pocket light can’t throw enough light. You’ll need an outlet within reach of the short cord, or an outdoor-rated extension cord.

Why we like it

  • Lights an entire area
  • Stated IP66 rating
  • Two-year replacement promise

Watch out for

It’s useless in an outage unless you have a generator or power station, and the five-foot cord means planning where you plug in.

Key Specifications

TypeCorded flood light, 5 ft cord
Brightness (listing)10,000 LM (title), 72 LEDs
PowerCorded, 5 ft power cord
Water resistance (listing)IP66
Beam (listing)120°, up to “3000²ft” coverage
Size11 x 10.39 x 10.59 in
Listed weightNot stated in listing

ModelThe specs model field reads “1 Head,” which describes the configuration, not a model number.
SellerPACOLIT P-US
Best Sellers Rank#8,884 overall; #22 in Job Site Lighting (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Raw output is the PacoLit’s argument. Its title claims “10000LM,” far above the 3,000 lumens JINLITE claims for the brightest rechargeable here, from “72LEDs” with “a beam angle of up to 120°.” PACOLIT P-US, the brand’s store, sells it.

Weather resistance is the best stated on the page: “IP66 waterproof technology is adopted for details from housing, and frames, to all the connecting parts,” in “cast aluminum housing and tempered glass.” The bullets add, “If any issues arise within two years of purchase, we will replace the product,” though the warranty field itself is empty.

Trade-offs are real. It’s the only corded pick, with “A 5ft power cord,” so it’s no help in an outage without backup power. The weight field is empty, the model field reads “1 Head,” and at 11 x 10.39 x 10.59 inches it’s the bulkiest. It ranks #22 in Job Site Lighting and #8,884 overall. The “save up to 80%” energy figure and “3000²ft” coverage are PacoLit’s own claims.

Garage and driveway projects that need a whole area lit are the natural fit. Crawl-space workers and outage preppers should choose a rechargeable pick instead.

Pros

  • Highest lumen claim here: 10,000 LM (title)
  • IP66 stated, the highest IP rating on the page
  • Cast aluminum housing and tempered glass
  • 120° beam angle claimed
  • Bullets promise replacement within two years

Cons

  • Needs an outlet; 5 ft cord only
  • Model field reads “1 Head,” not a model number
  • Weight field empty
  • Bulkiest pick: listed 11 x 10.39 x 10.59 in

Best for: A homeowner who wants to flood a garage, driveway or renovation space with light and has an outlet nearby.

4. JINLITE Magnetic Work Light Bar: Best Under-Hood Light Bar

JINLITE Magnetic Work Light Bar

JINLITE’s magnetic work light bar is a long, slim, rechargeable bar meant for lighting under a car hood or along a workbench. Instead of a single point of light, it spreads output across its length, and the listing puts the bar at 17.5 inches long.

JINLITE claims 3,000 lumens on High and 1,500 on Low, plus an SOS flash mode for roadside emergencies. Mounting options are the strongest part of the design: the listing describes powerful N50 magnets set in a scratch-free silicone base, plus an integrated hook that rotates 360°, so you can stick it to a fender or hang it from a hood latch, rafter or tree branch.

Inside is a 5200 mAh battery that JINLITE says gives up to six hours of continuous, fade-free runtime. It also works as a power bank, charging a phone or tablet through its USB output, which is useful during an outage. For toughness, the listing states an IP54 waterproof rating and IK07 impact resistance and says it’s designed to survive heavy rain and accidental drops.

It suits car owners doing their own maintenance, and anyone who wants one cordless light big enough to brighten a whole engine bay or workbench, with a phone-charging backup for storms.

Why we like it

  • Bright, even light across a long bar
  • Phone charging in a pinch
  • Silicone-cushioned magnets

Watch out for

At 17.5 inches it’s too long for tight crawl spaces or a pocket, and you get only one light for the money.

Key Specifications

TypeRechargeable magnetic light bar
Brightness (listing)3,000 LM High, 1,500 LM Low, SOS
Battery (listing)5200 mAh, up to 6 hours, USB power-bank output
Rating (listing)IP54 waterproof, IK07 impact

Listed weightNot stated in listing
WarrantyNot stated in listing
ModelJF1219
SellerJINLITE
Best Sellers Rank#7,393 overall; #15 in Job Site Lighting (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Among the rechargeables, JINLITE makes the biggest claims: “3000 lumens in High mode and 1500 lumens in Low,” from a “5200mAh” battery, the largest capacity stated here. JINLITE sells it from its own store, and it ranks #15 in Job Site Lighting and #7,393 overall.

Mounting is thoughtful: “powerful N50 magnets with a scratch-free silicone base and an integrated 360° rotating hook.” It “doubles as a reliable power bank” via USB output, a feature only the HOTLIGH shares. The listing states “an IP54 waterproof rating and IK07-certified impact resistance”; CARELITE also lists IK07 and a higher IP65.

You get one light, while the Ruboliy, FIBRAVE, HOTLIGH and CARELITE come in pairs. At a listed 17.5 x 2.1 x 3.4 inches it’s the longest pick, and the weight and warranty fields are empty. Modes are limited to High, Low and SOS, and runtime is “up to 6 hours.”

DIY mechanics who want a cordless bar for the engine bay, and outage preppers who want phone charging, should shortlist it. Crawl-space users will find the CARELITE or FIBRAVE easier to fit into tight spots.

Pros

  • Highest rechargeable lumen claim: 3,000 LM on High
  • Largest stated battery: 5200 mAh
  • Doubles as a power bank via USB output
  • IP54 and IK07 stated
  • N50 magnets with a scratch-free silicone base

Cons

  • Single light, not a pack
  • Longest pick at 17.5 in; not pocketable
  • Weight and warranty fields empty
  • Only three modes

Best for: A car owner or DIYer who wants one long, bright, cordless bar for engine bays and wide workspaces.

5. HOTLIGH Magnetic Work Light, 2-Pack: Best for Warm and White Light

HOTLIGH Magnetic Work Light, 2-Pack

HOTLIGH’s magnetic work light is a small two-in-one lamp with a spotlight on one face and a floodlight on another, sold as a pair. Its unusual feature is color choice: the floodlight runs in warm light at 2700–3500K or white light at 5500–8000K, so it can serve as a soft camp or reading light as well as a crisp repair light.

Brightness is stepless. You long-press the power key to dial it up or down, and HOTLIGH says the light runs about three to 13 hours from highest to lowest setting. The spotlight is claimed at up to 1,200 lumens with an illumination path of up to 161 meters, which the brand says can reach across dark garages and outdoor spaces.

The 4000 mAh built-in battery charges in two hours with the included 5V2A cable, per the listing, and four-grid indicators show remaining charge. It also doubles as a power bank for a phone. A strong magnet, a retractable hook and a 360° rotating head handle positioning, and what the listing calls a “1/4 British screw hole” adds a mounting option. The body is ABS with TPR non-slip rubber, rated IPX4 against water splashes.

It suits campers, homeowners prepping for outages and DIYers who want one light that can be gentle at the table and bright under the sink.

Why we like it

  • Warm or cool floodlight
  • Charges a phone
  • Hook, magnet and screw mount

Watch out for

IPX4 means splash resistance, not rain-soaked job sites, and the listing doesn’t clarify whether the weight is for one light or both.

ModelZF7899
SellerHOTLIGH LUX
Best Sellers Rank#13,776 overall; #44 in Job Site Lighting (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Color choice sets the HOTLIGH apart: its floodlight offers “warm light (2700-3500K) and white light (5500-8000K),” the only listing here with color temperatures. HOTLIGH LUX, the brand’s store, sells the pair.

The spotlight claims “up to 1200 lumens and an illumination path of up to 161m,” with “stepless brightness adjustment.” Its “4000mAh” battery charges “in 2 hours” with the included “5V2A fast charging cable,” and it “can also double as a portable mobile power bank,” like the JINLITE. Mounting covers “a strong magnet and a retractable hook design” plus a “1/4 British screw hole.”

Weather protection is modest: “IPX4,” below the CARELITE’s IP65 and JINLITE’s IP54. The warranty field is empty, and the listed 0.65 pounds doesn’t say whether it’s one light or two. It ranks #44 in Job Site Lighting and #13,776 overall, behind every pick except the CARELITE. The “3 to 13 hours” runtime is HOTLIGH’s figure.

Campers and outage preppers who want warm light at night and bright white light for repairs will like it. Anyone working in rain should pick a light with a higher stated rating.

Pros

  • Only pick listing warm (2700–3500K) and white (5500–8000K) floodlight
  • Spotlight claimed at 1,200 lumens and 161 m
  • 4000 mAh battery doubles as a power bank
  • IPX4 stated; magnet, hook and 1/4 in screw hole
  • 2-hour charge with the included 5V2A cable, per the listing

Cons

  • #44 in Job Site Lighting, #13,776 overall
  • Warranty field empty
  • Listed 0.65 lb doesn’t say per light or per pack
  • IPX4 is splash-level, lower than IP54 or IP65

Best for: Someone who wants warm light for reading or camping and cool white light for repairs, plus a phone charger in the same body.

6. CARELITE 780 Lumen Magnetic Work Light, 2-Pack: Best Pocket-Size Light

CARELITE 780 Lumen Magnetic Work Light, 2-Pack

CARELITE’s magnetic work light is a palm-size, Cyclops-shaped lamp sold in a green two-pack. It’s built for places where a bigger light won’t fit: behind an appliance, inside a cabinet, or up in the floor joists of a crawl space.

The light has three brightness levels, 190, 390 and 780 lumens, and CARELITE claims three to 12 hours of continuous light on a full charge. The 3000 mAh Li-Po battery charges in about three hours over the included USB-C cable, and green indicator lights on the back show remaining power. When the battery runs low, the light flashes three or four times about two minutes before it shuts off, giving you warning before you’re left in the dark.

The head pivots 360°, and you can stick the strong magnetic base to steel or thread it onto a tripod with the 1/4-inch mount. CARELITE says the shell is ABS and PA6, resistant to sweat and grime, and the listing states IP65 water and dust resistance plus IK07 impact protection. The bullets give its weight as 6.7 ounces and its size as 4.3 x 2.7 x 1.2 inches, and CARELITE includes a one-year free replacement warranty.

It suits homeowners who crawl into tight, dusty spaces, mechanics who want a pocket light, and anyone who likes to mount a light on a small tripod for hands-free work.

Why we like it

  • Fits a pocket
  • Warns before shutting off
  • Tripod thread and magnet

Watch out for

At 780 lumens it’s the dimmest here, so it’s a task light, not a room light.

Key Specifications

TypeRechargeable compact magnetic, 2-pack
Brightness (listing)190 / 390 / 780 lumens
Battery (listing)3000 mAh Li-Po, 3–12 hours, 3-hour USB-C charge
Rating (listing)IP65 water and dust, IK07 impact
Size / weight (listing)4.3 x 2.7 x 1.2 in; 6.7 oz
Size2.91 x 1.14 x 4.29 in
Listed weight0.4 pounds
WarrantyOne year warranty.
Model1223; made by Carelite Ltd.
SellerCarelite
Best Sellers Rank#21,425 overall; #77 in Job Site Lighting (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Toughness in a small package is the CARELITE pitch: “IP65 water and dust resistance and IK07 impact protection,” the best stated rating among the rechargeables, in a body the bullets size at “4.3 × 2.7 × 1.2 inches.” Carelite, the brand’s store, sells the two-pack.

Output is modest at “190 lm, 390 lm, and 780 lm,” the lowest top setting here. The battery details are the clearest on the page: “3000mAh Li-Po,” “3 to 12 hours,” a full charge “in just 3 hours via the included USB-C cable,” and a warning: the light “flashes 3–4 times about 2 minutes before shutoff.” A “1/4” tripod mount” joins the magnetic base.

The warranty field reads “One year warranty,” and the bullets promise “a 1-year free replacement warranty.” There’s no hook and no power-bank output. It has the weakest rank here, #77 in Job Site Lighting and #21,425 overall. The 6.7-ounce bullet weight matches the 0.4-pound field by our math.

Homeowners who work in dusty crawl spaces and want a light that warns before it quits should pick it. Anyone needing to light a whole room should choose the PacoLit or JINLITE.

Pros

  • IP65 and IK07 stated
  • Smallest listed size by our math: 2.91 x 1.14 x 4.29 in
  • Warranty field: “One year warranty”
  • 1/4 in tripod mount plus magnetic base
  • Low-battery warning flashes about 2 minutes before shutoff

Cons

  • Lowest lumen claim here: 780
  • Weakest rank: #77 in Job Site Lighting, #21,425 overall
  • No hook
  • No power-bank output stated

Best for: Someone who works in tight spots and wants a tough, palm-size light that warns before it dies.

How We Chose the Best LED Work Light Picks

We started with Amazon work light listings, kept only those in stock and sold by the brand’s own store, allowed one product per brand, and compared what each listing actually says:

  • Power: rechargeable or corded, battery capacity, runtime and charging time as stated.
  • Mounting: magnetic base, hook, rotating head, tripod thread or handle.
  • Brightness claims: lumens and modes, quoted and attributed to the brand.
  • Durability claims: IP and IK ratings only where the listing states them.
  • Extras: power-bank output, red light modes, color temperature and battery indicators.
  • Warranty and popularity: the warranty field or bullets, and Amazon sales rank.

All six picks fall in the same budget price tier, so we didn’t force a premium pick; the differences are in form and features.

Work Light Buying Guide

Best Rechargeable Work Light: Battery, Runtime and Charging

Five of our six picks are rechargeable. Only three state a battery capacity: JINLITE (5200 mAh), HOTLIGH (4000 mAh) and CARELITE (3000 mAh). Runtime claims range from “up to 6 hours” on the JINLITE to “3 to 13 hours” on the HOTLIGH, depending on brightness, and Ruboliy claims five to six hours at maximum. FIBRAVE lists neither capacity nor runtime. A battery gauge helps more than you might expect: Ruboliy has a digital display, HOTLIGH a four-grid indicator, and CARELITE green lights plus a flashing warning before shutoff. If you need a light during a power outage, Ready.gov’s power outage page advises having flashlights for every household member and planning for batteries or a power bank, so keep at least one work light charged.

Best Magnetic Work Light: Magnets, Hooks and Tripod Threads

Every rechargeable pick has a magnetic base, but the extras differ. FIBRAVE and JINLITE add a hook, and HOTLIGH has a retractable one. HOTLIGH and CARELITE offer a 1/4-inch screw thread for a tripod. JINLITE names its magnets (N50) and puts them in a scratch-free silicone base, which matters on painted car panels. A hook is the more useful mount in houses, where joists, shelves and rafters are usually wood, not steel.

An attic ladder leading into a lit attic

Best Portable Work Light for Crawl Spaces and Attics

Tight, dusty spaces favor small lights with a dust rating. CARELITE has the smallest listed dimensions here by our math and states IP65, which covers dust; FIBRAVE is the lightest per light at a listed 4.9 ounces and folds to 5.8 inches. Old halogen work lights ran hot. PacoLit, for one, contrasts its LEDs with “traditional halogen” lights, but LEDs aren’t heat-free: Energy Star explains that LEDs use heat sinks to absorb and dissipate the heat they produce, and that LEDs emit light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent bulbs, which emit light and heat in all directions. Best Work Light for Garage Use: Corded or Cordless?

A corded flood light like the PacoLit lights a whole bay and never needs charging, but it needs an outlet and won’t work in an outage. Cordless lights go anywhere and some double as phone chargers: the JINLITE and HOTLIGH both list power-bank output. Many garages end up with one of each: a flood for big jobs and a magnetic light for under the car. If you also keep a car, motorcycle or mower battery healthy over winter, see our guide to the best battery maintainer.

Best LED Work Light With Stand: What These Picks Offer

None of our six picks is a tripod-stand light. The PacoLit’s head angle adjusts and it sits on the floor or bench, and the HOTLIGH and CARELITE accept a camera-style tripod through their 1/4-inch threads. If a tall stand is essential, look for a listing that states the stand height, and check how its battery and lumens claims compare with the picks here.

Lumens, Color Temperature and IP Ratings

Lumens claims run from 780 (CARELITE) to 10,000 (PacoLit), all brand figures. Only HOTLIGH lists color temperatures: warm 2700–3500K and white 5500–8000K. For water and dust, the listings state IP66 (PacoLit), IP65 (CARELITE), IP54 (JINLITE) and IPX4 (HOTLIGH); Ruboliy and FIBRAVE state no IP rating, so treat them as dry-location lights. For a light you wear instead of stick, see our best headlamp guide, and for handheld and lantern options, our best flashlight picks.

Cords, GFCIs and Battery Safety

A corded work light is only as safe as the outlet and cord behind it. The NFPA’s electrical safety in the home page says GFCIs should be installed by a licensed electrician in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and basements, that all outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected, and that GFCIs should be tested once a month. The USFA’s appliance and electrical fire safety page says to replace worn, old or damaged extension cords right away and to keep cords out from under rugs, where they can be damaged or pinched.

A power outlet under a desk

Rechargeable lights add a lithium-ion battery. The USFA’s basement and garage fire safety page advises plugging only one charging appliance into an outlet and not using an extension cord when charging. Its battery fire safety page says to stop using lithium-ion batteries that show an odor, color change, too much heat, a change in shape, leaking or odd noises, not to charge them below 32°F or above 105°F, and not to leave them in hot cars. Whether a garage or battery fire would be covered depends on your policy, so ask your agent; our Ohio homeowners insurance guide covers the basics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best rechargeable work light for most homes?

The Ruboliy two-pack is our top pick. It has the best sales rank here (#6 in Job Site Lighting), a claimed 1,500 lumens, seven modes and a digital battery display. It states no IP rating, so keep it in dry spots.

Which is the best magnetic work light for car repairs?

For engine bays, the JINLITE light bar is 17.5 inches long, claims 3,000 lumens, and uses N50 magnets in a scratch-free silicone base. For a pocket light, the Ruboliy, FIBRAVE, HOTLIGH and CARELITE all have magnetic bases.

What is the best portable work light for a crawl space?

Look for small size, a hook or magnet, and a dust rating. The CARELITE has the smallest listed dimensions here, by our math, and states IP65; the FIBRAVE weighs a listed 4.9 ounces per light and has a fold-out hook.

Can a work light charge my phone during an outage?

Two of our picks list power-bank output: the JINLITE (5200 mAh) and the HOTLIGH (4000 mAh). Ready.gov advises planning for batteries or a power bank when the power goes out.

Do LED work lights get hot?

Less than old halogens, according to brands like PacoLit, but not zero. Energy Star notes that LEDs use heat sinks to absorb and dissipate the heat they produce, so keep any work light off insulation and away from things that can burn.

The Bottom Line

For most homes, the Ruboliy two-pack is the best LED work light to start with: popular, bright by its own claim and easy to read at a glance. The FIBRAVE pair adds hooks and a two-year warranty field at the lowest cost, the PacoLit floods a garage with corded light and a stated IP66 rating, and the JINLITE bar lights an engine bay and charges a phone. The HOTLIGH pair switches between warm and white light, and the CARELITE is the pocket light for tight, dusty spaces.
