1.32 to 3.18 GPM, Open Air Only: Best Portable Propane Water Heater for Camp Showers

As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. This doesn’t change our recommendations or the price you pay.

The best portable propane water heater turns a garden hose or a bucket and pump into a hot shower at a campsite, beside an RV or behind a cabin. Choosing one comes down to three numbers: gallons per minute (GPM), burner output in BTU, and the minimum water pressure it needs to fire. Weight, ignition power and the propane tank it takes come next.

We compared seven units from Gasland, Camplux, Kohree, Ranein and Flame King, from a 10-pound 1.32 GPM shower heater to a 3.18 GPM model for cabins and barns. Every one is sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store, and every spec below comes from its listing.

One rule comes before any spec. These heaters burn propane and make carbon monoxide, and none of the listings we read states a certified indoor venting setup. Run them outside in open air, never inside a tent, RV, shower stall or cabin, and check the gas connections for leaks before every use.

1. Gasland BE158 6L Propane Water Heater: Best Overall

Gasland BE158 6L Propane Water Heater

Gasland’s BE158 is a 6-liter portable tankless heater: water from a hose or pump runs through a copper heat exchanger over a propane burner and comes out hot at the shower head, with no tank to preheat. The listing rates it at 1.58 gallons per minute and a maximum of 41,000 BTU per hour.

Day to day, it hangs on a wall, post or hook, connects to a standard 20 lb liquid propane tank through the included CSA certified regulator and hose, and lights itself through an electronic ignition powered by two D-cell batteries. Gasland says it needs just 3.6 PSI of water pressure to start, so a gravity tank or a small pump can feed it, and an LED display shows the water temperature so you can tune the knobs before you step under it.

The title calls it “CSA Certified,” and the bullets list over-heating, low water flow, dry combustion, anti-freezing and high water pressure protection plus a flame failure device. The box includes a 5-foot on/off shower head, mounting hardware and a garden hose adapter. Gasland describes it as designed for portable outdoor use, splash-proof in a light drizzle, and says to drain it through the drain plug before winter storage.

It suits campers, hunters and homeowners who want one steady outdoor shower or a hot rinse station for pets, boots and gear, and who already keep a 20 lb grill tank around.

Why we like it

  • CSA certification in the title
  • Low 3.6 PSI start-up
  • Digital temperature readout

Watch out for

The listing mentions tiny homes, greenhouses and cabins, but it gives no indoor venting certification. Keep it outside in open air.

ModelBE158
SellerGasland
Best Sellers Rank#109,119 overall; #119 in Water Heaters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Certification sits right in the title: “CSA Certified,” with a bullet adding “safe as per Canadian and US Standard.” Among the 1.58 GPM units, that’s firmer wording than Kohree’s “CSA Safety Approved” and Ranein’s listing, which doesn’t mention CSA at all.

Specs are complete where it counts: “Maximum power output 41 000BTU/Hr,” 1.58 GPM, and “Low water pressure start-up just need 3.6 PSI.” It runs on “a standard 20 lb. liquid propane tank” with “electronic ignition powered by two D-cell batteries,” and adds an “LED Digital Display,” which only it and the Flame King mention among the hose-fed picks.

Gasland’s own store sells it; it ranks #109,119 overall and #119 in Water Heaters. The warranty and weight fields are empty, though the bullets promise “a 1-year Warranty against manufacture defects.” Listed size is 11.8 x 6.1 x 17.3 inches. Two caveats: its “temperature rise” of 55.4°F to 109.4°F reads like output settings, and it names “tiny home greenhouse or cabin house” uses without any indoor venting certification.

Campers who want a well-specified single-shower heater on a grill tank should start here. Skip it if you need more than one shower’s worth of flow at once; the Ranein, Flame King or BS318 suit that better.

Pros

  • Title: “CSA Certified”
  • 41,000 BTU/hr and 1.58 GPM, per listing
  • Starts at 3.6 PSI
  • LED temperature display
  • Shower head, regulator and hose included
  • Sold by Gasland, the brand’s store

Cons

  • Weight field empty: not stated
  • Warranty field empty; bullet says 1-year warranty
  • Its “temperature rise” figures read like output temperatures
  • Listing names tiny homes and cabins; treat as outdoor-only

Best for: A camper or homeowner who wants a CSA-certified 1.58 GPM shower heater that runs off a standard 20 lb propane tank.

2. Camplux AY132B 5L Portable Water Heater: Lightest Camp Shower Heater

Camplux AY132B 5L Portable Water Heater

Camplux’s AY132B is a compact 5-liter tankless heater built around camp showers. It weighs 10 pounds, per the listing, and a folding handle tucks away when you hang it or carry it from the car to the site.

Hook up a garden hose on one side and a propane tank through the included 5-foot gas regulator on the other, and two size D batteries handle ignition, so there’s nothing to plug in. Camplux puts the lowest start-up water pressure at 3.0 PSI, which matters if you’re feeding it from a jug, a gravity bag or a small 12V pump rather than a pressurized spigot.

The shower head has its own on/off switch. Camplux’s pitch is that once you have a temperature you like, you can switch the shower off while you soap up and turn it back on without re-adjusting. The listing calls it CSA Approved and lists anti-freezing, over-heating, low water flow, dry combustion and high water pressure protection, plus a flame failure device. A garden hose fitting set and an installation hardware pack come in the box, and the listing mentions a 1-year guarantee.

It suits tent campers, overlanders and anyone who rinses off beside the car and wants the smallest, lightest unit that still makes a real shower, used outside in open air.

Why we like it

  • 10-pound listed weight
  • On/off shower head saves water
  • 3.0 PSI start-up

Watch out for

At 1.32 GPM it is the lowest flow on this page, and the listing doesn’t state a BTU rating, so cold source water may limit how hot it gets.

ModelAY132BN; made by CAMPLUX
SellerCamplux
Best Sellers Rank#71,684 overall; #72 in Water Heaters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Weight is the AY132B’s case. The listing says it “weights only 10 pounds,” the lightest stated weight on this page, versus 12 pounds for the Kohree and 18 for the Flame King. A “folding handle” keeps it compact.

It also ties the Kohree for the lowest start-up figure here: “The lowest water pressure at the beginning for the camping water heater is 3.0 PSI.” Ignition runs on “two-size D batteries,” and the shower head lets you switch flow off while you soap up. Camplux calls it “CSA Approved” with “6-in-1 Protection.”

Camplux’s own store sells it, and it ranks #71,684 overall, second only to the Nano 3 Pro among our picks. The warranty field reads “1 Year Warranty.” Listed size is 11.42 x 4.33 x 14.8 inches. The gaps: 1.32 GPM is the lowest flow here, and the listing gives no BTU rating or temperature display, so it’s harder to judge how it copes with cold source water.

Car campers and overlanders who value light weight over flow will like it. Families showering back to back, or anyone camping in cold weather, should look at the 1.58 GPM Gasland or a larger unit.

Pros

  • Lightest weight stated here: 10 lb
  • Starts at 3.0 PSI, tied with Kohree for lowest here
  • Folding handle
  • CSA Approved, 6-in-1 protection, per listing
  • Warranty field: “1 Year Warranty”

Cons

  • Lowest flow here: 1.32 GPM
  • BTU rating not stated on the listing
  • No temperature display mentioned
  • Weakest of the propane units for winter water

Best for: A tent or car camper who wants the lightest, simplest propane shower heater and only needs one gentle shower at a time.

3. Kohree 6L Propane Tankless Water Heater: Best Budget Pick

Kohree 6L Propane Tankless Water Heater

Kohree’s 6-liter propane water heater matches the most common portable spec: 1.58 gallons of hot water per minute from a burner rated at a maximum of 41,000 BTU per hour. Water passes through the unit on demand, so there’s no tank to heat and nothing to wait for once it lights.

Setup is meant to be quick. Kohree says the gas pipe comes pre-connected to the gas inlet to reduce the chance of a leak at that joint, and you can carry it by the handle or hang it from the mounting bracket on the back. It starts on as little as 3 PSI of water pressure, and the listing gives a 12-pound weight. Kohree also describes it as windproof for use on windy days.

Safety features are listed as CSA Safety Approved with 6-in-1 protection: anti-freezing, over-heating, low water flow, dry combustion and high water pressure protection, plus a flame failure device. The temperature section is confusing: it gives the highest point as “120℉ (50℃)” and the lowest as “50℉ (10℃),” and those Fahrenheit and Celsius pairs don’t convert to each other, so treat them as rough settings rather than a measured temperature rise. Kohree also suggests its 10L model instead of this 6L unit where average winter lows fall below 50°F.

It suits warm-season campers and backyard users who want the standard 1.58 GPM spec at a lower price and will run it outside.

Why we like it

  • Pre-connected gas line
  • 3 PSI start-up
  • Handle plus rear bracket

Watch out for

No warranty term appears anywhere on the listing, and the temperature figures don’t add up, so check the manual on arrival.

ModelKR5506
SellerKohree
Best Sellers Rank#166,165 overall; #164 in Water Heaters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Price is the Kohree’s edge: it costs the least among our picks while matching the Gasland BE158’s “41000 BTU/hour” and “1.58 GPM.” It starts on “only 3 PSI of water pressure,” and Kohree says “The gas pipe is pre-connected to the gas inlet to eliminate the risk of gas leakage.”

Safety wording is “CSA Safety Approved & 6-in-1 Protection,” and the listing says it is “windproof and can be used on windy days.” The listing gives “12 lbs” for weight. Kohree also steers buyers toward its 10L model where “the average winter minimum temperature is below 50°F.”

Kohree’s own store sells it. The flags: the warranty field is empty and no warranty appears in the bullets, the temperature line pairs “120℉ (50℃)” and “50℉ (10℃),” which don’t convert to each other, and the size field (14.17 x 14.17 x 8.27 inches) looks like box dimensions. It ranks #166,165 overall, ahead of only the Flame King. The listing names “homes, cabins, RVs”; treat that as outdoor use beside them.

Warm-weather campers on a budget who want the common 1.58 GPM spec should consider it. Shoppers who want a stated warranty should pay a little more for the Gasland BE158 or Ranein.

Pros

  • Lowest price among our picks
  • 41,000 BTU/hr and 1.58 GPM, per listing
  • Starts at 3 PSI
  • Gas pipe pre-connected to the inlet
  • CSA Safety Approved, windproof claim

Cons

  • Warranty field empty and no warranty in bullets: not stated
  • Weakest sales rank here bar one: #166,165 overall
  • Temperature figures mix °F and °C oddly
  • Listing names homes, cabins and RVs; treat as outdoor-only

Best for: A budget-minded camper who wants 1.58 GPM and CSA safety approval and is fine without a stated warranty.

4. Ranein 8L Propane Tankless Water Heater: Best Mid-Size, Longest Warranty

Ranein 8L Propane Tankless Water Heater

Ranein’s 8-liter heater sits one size above the common 6L units, rated at 2.11 gallons per minute from a 48,000 BTU burner. Like the others it heats on demand, and Ranein says it delivers water at 55°F to 109°F for patios, cabins and campsites with no preheating.

The listing gives the body as 20.5 x 6.1 x 12.6 inches and 13.3 pounds, and says it runs on 3.6 PSI, which Ranein pitches for low-pressure rural camping. Inside, an oxygen-free copper water tank and a segmented fire row are meant to burn more completely and lose less heat, and a stainless steel shell protects the internals from corrosion.

Ranein is unusually direct about placement. Its note says the heater “must be installed in a well-ventilated area” and “must not be installed in indoor spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms, basements, etc.,” with outdoor installation recommended. It also warns not to wrap Teflon tape between the gas regulator and the gas inlet and to check for gas leaks before operating. The listing mentions six safety protections and a 2-year warranty backed by customer service.

It suits people who want a bit more hot water per minute than a 6L heater, such as for a cabin’s outdoor shower or a rinse station that sees heavy use, and who like a clearly stated outdoor-only rule.

Why we like it

  • 2-year warranty
  • Clear outdoor-only instruction
  • 2.11 GPM flow

Watch out for

The listing doesn’t mention CSA certification or say how ignition is powered, and the 109°F top setting is modest.

Key Specifications

TypePortable tankless, 2.11 GPM, 48,000 BTU

Warranty2 Year Manufacturer
ModelTMYD-01020120
SellerRanein Store
Best Sellers Rank#100,274 overall; #90 in Water Heaters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Two years is the longest coverage here: the warranty field reads “2 Year Manufacturer,” and the bullets say it is “backed by a 2-year warranty.” Every other pick that states a term offers one year.

On output, “Delivers 2.11 GPM” from “48,000 BTU” puts it between the 6L units and the Flame King. It “Runs on 3.6 PSI,” and Ranein lists an “oxygen-free copper water tank” and “corrosion-resistant stainless steel shell.” The bullets give 20.5 x 6.1 x 12.6 inches and 13.3 pounds; the size field’s 12.6 x 12.6 x 20.5 inches looks like packaging.

Its safety note is the plainest on the page: it “must not be installed in indoor spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms, basements, etc.” Ranein Store sells it, and it ranks #100,274 overall. What’s missing: no CSA wording, no stated ignition power source, and a top setting of 109°F, lower than the Kohree’s 120°F claim or the Nano 3 Pro’s 120°F.

Cabin owners and frequent campers who want more flow than a 6L unit and a longer warranty fit it well. If CSA certification on the listing is a must, the Gasland BS318 or Flame King cover higher flow with that wording.

Pros

  • Longest warranty here: 2-year, per listing and warranty field
  • 2.11 GPM, 48,000 BTU
  • Clearest indoor warning: must not be installed indoors
  • Stainless steel shell, copper water tank, per listing
  • Sold by Ranein Store

Cons

  • No CSA wording on the listing
  • Output range tops out at 109°F, per listing
  • Ignition power source not stated
  • Size field (12.6 x 12.6 x 20.5 in) differs from bullet (20.5 x 6.1 x 12.6 in)

Best for: A cabin or campsite owner who wants a step up in flow from the 6L class and values a longer warranty.

5. Flame King 10L Portable Tankless Water Heater: Best for RV Trips

Flame King 10L Portable Tankless Water Heater

Flame King’s 10-liter heater steps up to 2.64 gallons per minute at 68,000 BTU, according to its title, which aims it at RV trips, farms and cabins where a 6L unit can feel thin. It still works the same way: water flows through, the burner lights automatically, and hot water comes out of the included shower head.

Controls are more detailed than most here. The listing names a Winter/Summer setting, MIN/MAX gas, MAX/MIN water flow rate and a digital water temperature meter, so you can turn the burner up for cold spring water or down on a hot afternoon. A CSA-certified regulator and 5-foot hose connect to a BBQ propane tank with a QCC1 Type-1 valve, and the shower head comes with an on/off control and a 4.5-foot stainless steel wrapped hose meant to resist kinks and punctures.

Flame King lists CSA safety approval and protections including auto cut-off water control, anti-dry combustion, over-pressure, overheating, flameout and anti-frozen protection. The steel case is described as durable, and the warranty is 1 year against manufacturer defects. Flame King says the heater is designed to be installed under an awning or other protective cover to keep rain from entering the top vent.

It suits RV owners and farm users who want more hot water per minute and already carry a 20 lb grill tank, with a covered but open-air spot outside the coach.

Why we like it

  • 2.64 GPM flow
  • Seasonal and flow controls
  • Kink-resistant shower hose

Watch out for

Plan for an open-air covered spot outside the RV: Flame King wants rain kept out of the top vent, and at 18 pounds it is the heaviest stated weight here.

Key Specifications

ModelYSNBM264a
SellerAmazon.com
Best Sellers Rank#186,400 overall; #188 in Water Heaters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

Amazon.com sells the Flame King, the only pick here not sold by the brand’s own store, and that matters for its warranty: the field reads “1-Year Manufacturer Warranty, Warranty void if purchased from any other seller that is not Flame King and/or Amazon Retail.”

Output is the second-highest here: “10L 2.64 GPM at 68,000 BTU.” Controls go further than most, with a “Winter/Summer Setting, MIN/MAX Gas Setting, MAX/MIN Water Flow Rate Setting, Digital Water Temperature Meter.” It connects to “a BBQ propane tank (QCC1 Type-1 Valve)” through a CSA-certified regulator, and the listing says “CSA SAFETY APPROVED.”

At a listed 18 pounds and 13 x 7 x 21.5 inches, it’s the heaviest stated weight here, more than the Ranein’s 13.3 pounds. It also ranks lowest among our picks at #186,400 overall. Flame King says it “is designed to be installed under an awning or other protective cover to help prevent rain from entering through the top vent,” so plan a covered, open-air spot, not an enclosure.

RVers and farm users who want real flow from a grill tank are the right buyers. Tent campers who carry gear any distance will find the 10-pound Camplux AY132B easier.

Pros

  • 2.64 GPM at 68,000 BTU, per title
  • Sold by Amazon.com
  • CSA Safety Approved, per listing
  • Winter/Summer, gas and water flow adjustments
  • Warranty field: 1-Year Manufacturer Warranty

Cons

  • Heaviest listed weight here: 18 lb
  • Warranty void if bought from other sellers, per field
  • Needs an awning or cover against rain, per listing
  • Weakest sales rank here: #186,400 overall

Best for: An RVer or farm user who wants 2.64 GPM from a standard BBQ propane tank, set up outside the coach.

6. Gasland BS318 12L Outdoor Water Heater: Best High-Flow for Cabins

Gasland BS318 12L Outdoor Water Heater

Gasland’s BS318 is the biggest heater on this page: 12 liters, 3.18 gallons per minute and a maximum output of 82,000 BTU per hour, per the listing. It’s meant to hang on a wall or post outside a cabin, barn or campsite and feed a shower or a wash-down hose.

It runs on a standard 20 lb liquid propane tank and lights with an electronic ignition powered by two D-cell batteries. Gasland says it starts with just 3.6 PSI of water pressure, and it mounts using the bracket on the top or back. The package includes a CSA certified gas regulator and hose, a 5-foot on/off shower head, mounting hardware and a garden hose adapter. Gasland mentions energy-saving technology and a burner designed to cut gas use and burning noise.

The listing is specific about limits. It is “not suitable for high altitude areas over 3300 feet and strong wind conditions,” and it is designed for portable outdoor use: splash-proof in a little drizzle, but prolonged rain will damage the internals. Gasland says to drain it through the drain plug for winter and store it somewhere warm and dry, and warns not to wrap Teflon tape between the regulator and the gas inlet and to always check for gas leaks before operating.

It suits a seasonal cabin, horse barn or homestead where several people shower back to back or the hose runs long, as long as the site sits below 3,300 feet.

Why we like it

  • 3.18 GPM flow
  • 82,000 BTU output
  • Clear altitude and wind limits

Watch out for

Check your elevation first: Gasland rules out sites above 3,300 feet and strong wind, and the listing mentions tiny homes and cabins without any indoor venting certification.

Key Specifications

Listed weightNot stated in listing
WarrantyNot stated in listing
ModelBS318
SellerGasland
Best Sellers Rank#123,120 overall; #127 in Water Heaters (Oct 2026)

Why We Recommend It

No pick here moves more water: “3.18GPM/12L” and “Maximum power output 82,000BTU/Hr,” ahead of the Flame King’s 2.64 GPM and 68,000 BTU. It still “just need[s] 3.6 PSI of water pressure to start” and lights on two D-cell batteries.

Limits are stated plainly: “Not suitable for high altitude areas over 3300 feet and strong wind conditions,” and while it is “splash-proof,” “prolonged exposure to rain/water will damage the internal components.” Gasland also warns “DO NOT TWINE TEFLON TAPE between gas regulator and gas inlet pipe” and to “Always check gas leakage before operation.”

Gasland’s store sells it; it ranks #123,120 overall. The warranty and weight fields are empty, and the CSA mention covers the included “gas regulator and hose,” not the heater itself, unlike the BE158’s title. At 24 x 13.8 x 7.1 inches listed, it’s the largest here. Like the BE158, it lists “tiny home, greenhouse, or cabin house” uses without indoor venting certification, so mount it outside.

Cabin and barn owners below 3,300 feet who need back-to-back showers or long hose runs should shortlist it. Mountain campers, and anyone who wants a stated warranty, should look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Highest flow here: 3.18 GPM
  • Highest output here: 82,000 BTU/hr
  • Starts at 3.6 PSI
  • Two D-cell battery ignition
  • Sold by Gasland, the brand’s store

Cons

  • Not for altitudes over 3,300 feet or strong wind, per listing
  • Warranty and weight fields empty: not stated
  • CSA wording covers the regulator, not the heater
  • Largest listed size: 24 x 13.8 x 7.1 in

Best for: A cabin, barn or homestead owner below 3,300 feet who wants the highest flow in an outdoor wall-mounted unit.

7. Camplux Nano 3 Pro: Best Rechargeable Shower System

Camplux Nano 3 Pro

Camplux’s Nano 3 Pro is a different kind of portable heater: a self-contained shower system that sits on the ground, pumps water from a bucket, jug or stream with an included 12V submersion pump, heats it with a 1 lb propane cylinder and sends it to a shower head on a bracket. You don’t need a hose spigot or a 20 lb tank.

A built-in 4,000 mAh battery runs the system, and Camplux says it gives about 100 minutes of use on a full charge, recharges in 3 hours and can charge while in use from a power station, a 110V outlet or a 12V car socket. Ignition is automatic, and flow is controlled at the shower head switch. The listing gives a temperature range of 70°F to 120°F and a weight of 13.7 pounds, with two handles for carrying.

Camplux calls it CSA certified for safe outdoor propane use and lists over-temperature protection with an E6 alert, flame-failure protection and automatic shutoff when tipped over. The box includes the heater, the pump assembly, a 12V cigarette lighter cable, the shower bracket, shower head and hose, a quick-connect water inlet hose and a gas regulator. The listing is clear that it works only with 1 lb propane tanks and can’t be used with 20 lb tanks.

It suits backpack-to-car campers, anglers and hunters who want a complete hot shower kit they can set up anywhere outdoors with a bucket of water.

Why we like it

  • Pump and battery built in
  • Tip-over shutoff
  • Charges from a car socket

Watch out for

One-pound cylinders only, and the listing doesn’t give a flow rate or BTU rating to compare with the other picks.

Why We Recommend It

Popularity favors the Nano 3 Pro: #65,309 overall and #85 in Showers, the best rank among our picks. It’s also the only all-in-one kit, with “1* 12V submerssion water pump assembly,” a shower bracket and a “built-in 4,000 mAh battery, providing 100 minutes of use on a full charge.”

Safety wording is specific: “CSA certified for safe outdoor propane use” with “over-temperature protection with E6 alert, flame-failure protection and automatic shutoff when tipped over.” No other pick lists a tip-over shutoff. Charging options include a “portable power station, 110V AC outlet, and 12V DC car cigarette lighter.”

Camplux’s store sells it. The trade-offs are real: it “Works only with 1lb propane tanks. Can’t be used with 20lb gas tanks,” the warranty field is empty, and the listing gives no GPM or BTU figure to compare against the 1.32 to 3.18 GPM units. It’s also the priciest pick. Listed weight is 13.69 pounds at 6.69 x 6.69 x 14.57 inches, and the temperature range is 70°F to 120°F.

Campers without a pressurized water source who want a ready-made shower kit will get the most from it. If you already have a hose and a 20 lb tank, the Gasland BE158 does the job for less.

How We Chose the Best Portable Propane Water Heaters

We started with portable propane tankless heaters that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store, and we skipped the electric under-sink units covered in our under sink water heater guide. Then we compared what each listing actually states:

  • Flow and output: gallons per minute and BTU per hour, quoted as listed.
  • Minimum water pressure: the PSI needed to light the burner, which decides whether a gravity tank or small pump can feed it.
  • Ignition and power: D-cell batteries, automatic ignition or a rechargeable battery.
  • Safety wording: CSA certification, flame failure and tip-over protection, and any outdoor-only or indoor warning.
  • Fuel and fittings: 20 lb tank, BBQ tank valve or 1 lb cylinders, plus what comes in the box.
  • Warranty, weight and rank: the warranty field, listed weight and Amazon sales rank, with empty fields flagged.

GPM: How Much Hot Water You Actually Get

Flow rate is the headline number. Our picks run from 1.32 GPM (Camplux AY132B) through 1.58 GPM (Gasland BE158, Kohree), 2.11 GPM (Ranein 8L) and 2.64 GPM (Flame King) to 3.18 GPM (Gasland BS318). The liter size in each name (5L, 6L, 8L, 10L, 12L) is the same idea in metric. A single camp shower works fine at the low end; a cabin where several people shower back to back, or a long wash-down hose, is where the bigger units earn their weight.

BTU, Temperature Rise and Cold Source Water

BTU is burner output, and more BTU at the same flow means more heat to work with. The listings stated range from 41,000 BTU (Gasland BE158 and Kohree) to 82,000 BTU (Gasland BS318); the Camplux AY132B and Nano 3 Pro don’t give one. Be careful with “temperature rise.” Several listings quote figures that look more like output temperature settings, such as 55.4°F to 109.4°F, than a measured rise over the incoming water. Cold well or creek water in spring needs more heat than a sun-warmed hose in July, so give yourself headroom if you camp in the shoulder seasons.

Best Tankless Water Heater for RV Campsites

A portable unit is not the same as the built-in tankless heater in an RV’s wall. It is a separate appliance that hangs outside the coach, under an awning or on a post, and feeds an outdoor shower or rinse hose. The Flame King connects to a BBQ tank with a QCC1 valve and wants a covered spot to keep rain out of its top vent; the Gasland and Kohree units run from a 20 lb tank. Never move one inside the RV, its bathroom or a slide-out. If your rig cooks outside too, our RV grill guide covers mounting and propane hookups for campsite cooking.

Water Pressure, Pumps and Shower Kits

Every heater here needs a minimum flow to light. The Camplux AY132B lists 3.0 PSI, the Kohree 3 PSI and the Gasland and Ranein units 3.6 PSI, low enough for many gravity tanks and small 12V pumps. The Camplux Nano 3 Pro skips the question by including its own submersion pump and battery. Most picks include an on/off shower head; Kohree’s and Ranein’s listings don’t say whether one is included.

Ignition, Tanks and Cold-Weather Storage

The Gaslands and the Camplux AY132B light with two D-cell batteries, the Flame King lists automatic ignition, and the Nano 3 Pro runs on a rechargeable battery. Kohree’s and Ranein’s listings don’t say how ignition is powered. Several listings mention anti-freezing protection and a drain plug; water left inside can freeze and damage the heat exchanger, so drain the heater before storing it for winter.

Carbon Monoxide and Propane Safety: Outdoors Only

A propane water heater is a burner with an open exhaust, and that exhaust contains carbon monoxide. The NFPA’s carbon monoxide page describes CO as an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels such as propane burn incompletely. The CPSC’s camping equipment safety alert reports at least 26 deaths from 2006 to 2010 from CO poisoning associated with camping equipment, and warns against using portable heaters or lanterns while sleeping in enclosed areas such as tents, campers and other vehicles.

  • Run it outside, in open air. None of the listings we read states a certified indoor venting setup. Ranein says its unit must not be installed in kitchens, bathrooms or basements, and Camplux calls the Nano 3 Pro certified for outdoor propane use. Treat every pick the same way, even where a listing mentions cabins, tiny homes or greenhouses.
  • Never in a tent, RV, shower stall or enclosed porch. Wind walls and privacy enclosures should stay open at the top so exhaust can escape.
  • Know the symptoms. The CPSC lists headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and confusion, and notes CO poisoning can be mistaken for a cold or flu.
  • Keep CO alarms where people sleep. NFPA advises CO alarms in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, and moving to fresh air immediately if one sounds. That applies to the cabin or RV next to your outdoor shower, too.
  • Leak-check the propane connection. NFPA’s grilling safety page advises checking propane tanks for leaks before use. Ranein, Gasland and Camplux listings warn not to wrap Teflon tape between the regulator and the gas inlet and to check for leaks before operating.

The same rules apply to camp stoves; our camping stove guide covers canisters and where to cook.

Propane at the Cabin, the Campsite and the RV: Coverage

A propane appliance outside an RV or cabin raises two questions: what happens if a leak or fire damages the coach, and what covers the heater itself if it’s stolen from a campsite. Damage to the RV usually falls under an RV policy, not your homeowners policy. Our RV insurance guide explains what an RV policy can cover, and our Ohio homeowners insurance guide covers a cabin or the gear you store at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best portable propane water heater for camping?

For most campers, the Gasland BE158: its title says CSA Certified, it delivers 1.58 GPM at 41,000 BTU per the listing, starts at 3.6 PSI and runs from a 20 lb tank. For the lightest option, the Camplux AY132B lists 10 pounds and 1.32 GPM.

Can I use a portable propane water heater indoors or in an RV?

No. None of the listings we compared states a certified indoor venting setup, and Ranein’s says its unit must not be installed indoors. Propane burners make carbon monoxide, and the CPSC warns against using portable heaters in tents, campers and vehicles. Run them outside in open air.

What is the best tankless water heater for an RV?

For a portable unit used outside the RV, the Flame King 10L lists 2.64 GPM at 68,000 BTU and connects to a BBQ tank. It needs an awning or cover to keep rain out of its top vent. Built-in RV tankless heaters are a separate category not covered here.

How many GPM do I need for an outdoor shower?

One person showering is comfortable in the 1.32 to 1.58 GPM range of the Camplux AY132B, Gasland BE158 or Kohree. For back-to-back showers or a long hose, the Ranein (2.11 GPM), Flame King (2.64 GPM) or Gasland BS318 (3.18 GPM) give more flow.

How do I check a propane water heater for gas leaks?

Follow the manual and check every connection before each use; NFPA advises checking propane tanks for leaks before use. Several listings warn not to wrap Teflon tape between the regulator and the gas inlet. If you smell gas, shut off the tank valve and don’t light the heater.

The Bottom Line

The Gasland BE158 is the best portable propane water heater for most campers: CSA certified per its title, 1.58 GPM, a 3.6 PSI start and a temperature display. The Camplux AY132B is the lightest, the Kohree 6L costs less, and the Ranein 8L adds flow and a 2-year warranty. For more hot water, the Flame King 10L suits RV trips and the Gasland BS318 suits cabins below 3,300 feet, while the Camplux Nano 3 Pro is a complete shower kit with its own pump. Whichever you choose, run it outside in open air and leak-check the gas line every time.
