The best patio heater depends on two things: what fuel you can use and how much space you need to warm. A 46,000 BTU propane tower can heat a group around a table, a tabletop burner suits a small balcony, and a 1500W electric infrared heater can plug in near a covered seating area.
We compared seven heaters that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store: three propane towers, one tabletop propane unit and three electric infrared models. For each, we stick to what the listing states: BTU or watts, heat range, tip-over and flame-out protection, wheels or mounting, and any safety mark such as CSA or ETL. Where a listing leaves something out, we say so.
One rule applies to every gas model here. Propane patio heaters are for open outdoor spaces, never a garage, enclosed porch or tent, and they need the clearances set out in their manuals. The safety section below explains why.

1. Amazon Basics 46,000 BTU Patio Heater (62108): Best Overall Propane Patio Heater
Amazon Basics’ 62108 is a classic mushroom-style propane patio heater: a tall post with a burner and reflector at the top and a cabinet at the base that hides a 20-pound liquid propane tank. The listing rates it at 46,000 BTUs and says it heats up to a 9-foot radius, which makes it a fit for a group sitting around an outdoor table rather than one person on a balcony.
Day to day, you open the tank, press the one-touch ignition button and set the output with an adjustable temperature knob. Wheels on the base let you roll it into place, and the listing describes it as suitable for cafes, restaurants and home patios. The powder-coated slate gray finish is meant to hold up outdoors.
Safety features in the listing are a tilt safety auto shut-off valve, a water box for weighing down the base and wheel kit, and a chain to secure the propane tank inside the cabinet. The bullets don’t mention a flame-out sensor, and they don’t name a certification mark. The listed size is 32.1 x 32.1 x 91.3 inches, and the specs give its weight as about 37 pounds before you fill the water box.
It suits households with an open patio, deck or yard that want a full-height heater for evening gatherings and can store and refill a standard 20-pound tank. Check the clearances in the manual before you place it under any umbrella, awning or roof overhang.
Why we like it
- Best-selling patio heater by rank
- Water box for added base weight
- Tilt auto shut-off valve
Watch out for
The bullets don’t list flame-out protection or a certification mark, so read the manual’s safety and clearance pages before first use.
Key Specifications
| Type | Propane tower, 46,000 BTU |
|---|---|
| Heat output | 46,000 BTU (listing) |
| Heat range | Up to a 9-foot radius (listing) |
| Fuel | 20 lb liquid propane tank, not included |
| Safety (listing) | Tilt safety auto shut-off valve; water box; tank chain |
| Size | 32.12 x 32.12 x 91.3 in |
| Listed weight | 36.99 pounds |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
| Model | 62108; made by Amazon |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #1,022 overall; #1 in Patio Heaters (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Sales rank makes the first case: the Amazon Basics 62108 is #1 in Patio Heaters and #1,022 overall, the strongest rank on this page. Amazon.com sells it, and it is the only tower here with a water box listed for base weight.
The bullets promise “46,000 BTUs for heating up to a 9 foot radius” with an “adjustable temperature knob,” plus “One-touch ignition” and “wheels for maneuvering into place.” Safety reads: “Tilt safety auto-shut off valve; water box for weighing down the base and wheel kit; chain included to secure the tank.” It needs a “20 pound liquid propane gas tank,” not included.
Gaps are worth noting. Unlike the Sweetcrispy and Tangkula, the bullets don’t mention flame-out protection, and unlike the Tangkula, no certification mark is named. The warranty field is empty. At 36.99 pounds it is the heaviest listed weight here, and at 91.3 inches the tallest.
Open patios and decks that host groups are its natural home. Small balconies, or anyone who wants flame-out protection spelled out on the listing, should look at the Cuisinart or the Sweetcrispy instead.
Pros
- #1 in Patio Heaters, #1,022 overall: the best rank here
- Tilt safety auto shut-off valve, per the listing
- Water box to weigh down the base, plus a tank chain
- One-touch ignition and wheels
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- No flame-out or CSA mention in the bullets
- Heaviest listed weight here: 36.99 lb
- Needs a 20 lb propane tank, not included
- Warranty field empty
Best for: A homeowner with an open patio who wants a popular, full-height propane heater for groups.
2. Sweetcrispy 48,000 BTU Patio Heater: Best Propane Tower With Side Table
Sweetcrispy’s 48,000 BTU patio heater is a full-height propane tower with a twist: a round tabletop built into the post. The brand says it covers an 18-foot diameter area and comfortably fits four to eight people, and it lists backyard gatherings and camping nights as uses.
Using it is much like any tower heater. You roll it into position on its wheels, connect the tank, light it and adjust the valve. The side table holds drinks, phones and small items, and a cutout in the center gives you access to the tank valve without lifting panels. Sweetcrispy also includes ground anchors, which it says fasten the heater for steadier heating on uneven ground.
Safety is where the listing is specific. Sweetcrispy says the heater automatically cuts the gas if the flame blows out, and a tilt sensor shuts it off when it tilts more than 45 degrees. The burner is described as a double-layer 304 stainless steel mesh that resists rust and warping. The listing doesn’t name a certification mark, and the specs list a size of 32.1 x 32.1 x 87 inches with no weight.
It suits households that host on a lawn or uneven patio and want flame-out protection plus a handy surface beside the heat. As with any propane tower, keep it in open air and follow the manual’s clearances.
Why we like it
- Highest BTU rating on this list
- Flame-out and tilt shutoff
- Side table and ground anchors
Watch out for
The listing doesn’t name a certification mark or the tank size, so check the manual for both before you buy a tank.
Key Specifications
| Type | Propane tower, 48,000 BTU |
|---|---|
| Heat output | 48,000 BTU (listing) |
| Heat range | 18-foot diameter, 4–8 people (brand claim) |
| Burner | Double-layer 304 stainless steel mesh |
| Safety (listing) | Gas cutoff if flame goes out; tilt shutoff over 45° |
| Size | 32.1 x 32.1 x 87 in |
| Listed weight | Not stated in listing |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
| Model | SW-JRQ-PT01-BN |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #3,457 overall; #4 in Patio Heaters (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
At 48,000 BTU, Sweetcrispy’s tower carries the highest rating on this page, and the brand claims it heats an “18-foot diameter area” that “comfortably fits 4–8 people.” It ranks #4 in Patio Heaters and #3,457 overall, and Amazon.com is the seller.
Safety is spelled out more fully than on the Amazon Basics: it “automatically cuts gas if the flame blows out, plus a tilt sensor shuts it off when tilted over 45°.” The burner is a “Double-Layer 304 Stainless Steel” mesh, and the “Built-In Round Side Table” has “a central cutout for simple valve adjustments.”
Ground anchors are included for “uneven outdoor ground surfaces,” something no other pick lists. On the minus side, the weight and warranty fields are empty, no certification mark is named, and the bullets don’t give the tank size. The listed 32.1 x 32.1 x 87 inches matches the Amazon Basics footprint.
Lawn hosts who want flame-out protection and somewhere to set a drink will get the most from it. Shoppers who want a stated certification mark should compare the Tangkula, which lists CSA.
Pros
- 48,000 BTU, the highest output here
- Flame-out gas cutoff and 45° tilt shutoff, per the listing
- Built-in round side table with valve cutout
- Ground anchors included
- #4 in Patio Heaters; sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- No certification mark named in the listing
- Weight and warranty fields empty
- Tank size not stated in the bullets
- “18-foot diameter” coverage is the brand’s claim
Best for: Someone who wants a high-output propane tower with flame-out protection and a place to set drinks.
3. Tangkula 45,000 BTU Pyramid Patio Heater: Best Pyramid Flame Heater
Tangkula’s pyramid heater burns propane inside a tall heat-resistant glass tube, so you see a column of flame rather than a glowing burner head. The listing rates it at 45,000 BTU with a 17-foot heat range and 360-degree heating, and says it needs no preheating.
Starting it is a button press: a pulse ignition system lights the flame, and a variable control knob adjusts heat from low to high. The igniter needs one AAA battery, which isn’t included. A magnetic door on the base gives access to the propane tank, wheels help you move it, and a zippered cover comes in the box for weather protection when it’s not in use.
Tangkula calls its safety package “Triple Safety Protection”: an anti-tilt device that shuts the heater off when it tilts more than 45 degrees, flame-out protection and oxygen depletion protection. The listing also says the heater is “CSA certificated.” The frame uses an aluminum top cover, and the listed size is 20.5 x 20.5 x 89 inches; the specs give no weight.
It suits patios where the heater doubles as a focal point, and buyers who want oxygen depletion protection on top of tilt and flame-out shutoffs. A glass tube needs care when moving and cleaning, so read the manual’s handling notes.
Why we like it
- Glass-tube flame effect
- Tilt, flame-out and ODS protection
- Cover included
Watch out for
Bring a AAA battery for the igniter, and handle the glass tube carefully when you move the heater.
Key Specifications
| Type | Propane pyramid, glass tube, 45,000 BTU |
|---|---|
| Heat output | 45,000 BTU (listing) |
| Heat range | 17 ft, 360° (listing) |
| Safety (listing) | Anti-tilt shutoff over 45°; flame-out and oxygen depletion protection |
| Included | Zippered cover |
| Size | 20.5 x 20.5 x 89 in |
| Listed weight | Not stated in listing |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
| Model | AM13997HM |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #13,920 overall; #27 in Patio Heaters (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Three stated shutoffs set the Tangkula apart: “an anti-tilt safety device that automatically shuts off when tilt over 45°,” plus “flame-out protection and oxygen depletion protection.” No other pick lists oxygen depletion protection, and it is the only propane model whose listing says “CSA certificated.”
Output is 45,000 BTU with a “17 ft heat range,” close to the Amazon Basics. Ignition is a “fast pulse ignition system,” which “Requires 1 AAA battery (not included).” A “magnetic door design” opens to the tank, and a “zippered cover” is included, the only cover in the box among our picks.
Amazon.com sells it. Popularity trails the other towers at #27 in Patio Heaters and #13,920 overall, and the weight and warranty fields are empty. The glass tube gives a striking flame but adds a fragile part, and the bullets don’t name the tank size.
Patios where the heater is part of the décor suit it well, especially for buyers who value the extra stated safety features. Anyone who needs the most heat per dollar or a lighter unit to move often may prefer the Sweetcrispy.
Pros
- Listing says “CSA certificated”
- Anti-tilt, flame-out and oxygen depletion protection, per the listing
- Zippered cover included
- Pulse ignition, wheels, magnetic tank door
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Weakest propane-tower rank here: #13,920 overall
- Ignition needs 1 AAA battery, not included
- Weight and warranty fields empty
- Tank size not stated in the bullets
Best for: A host who wants a decorative flame column and the longest list of stated safety features among the propane picks.
4. Cuisinart COH-513 Tabletop Patio Heater: Best Tabletop Propane Heater
Cuisinart’s COH-513 is a compact propane heater made to sit on a table. The listing rates it at 11,000 BTUs and says it warms up to 30 square feet, with a reflector top plate that spreads heat across the area around it. That is a small zone, meant for one table rather than a whole patio.
Daily use is simple. You attach a 1-pound propane cylinder, light it and turn the dial between low and high. For longer nights, Cuisinart says you can connect it to a 20-pound tank with an optional regulator that isn’t included. The listing calls it lightweight and compact and names patios, camping trips and tailgates as uses.
Two safety features are listed: a built-in anti-tilt automatic shut-off and a burner screen guard. The bullets don’t mention flame-out protection or a certification mark. The specs give a size of 12.5 x 16.5 x 25.3 inches and a weight of 8.5 pounds, and the warranty field reads “1 year limited warranty.”
It suits small patios, camping and tailgates where a tower heater would be too big to carry. Use it only in open air, keep it on a stable table, and check your building or campground rules before using propane on a balcony.
Why we like it
- Portable, table-height heat
- 1 lb or 20 lb tank options
- Stated one-year limited warranty
Watch out for
Its 30-square-foot reach is small, and the 20 lb tank option needs a regulator you buy separately.
Key Specifications
| Type | Tabletop propane, 11,000 BTU |
|---|---|
| Heat output | 11,000 BTU (listing) |
| Heat range | Up to 30 sq ft (listing) |
| Fuel | 1 lb propane cylinder, or 20 lb tank with optional regulator (not included) |
| Safety (listing) | Anti-tilt automatic shut-off; burner screen guard |
| Size | 12.5 x 16.5 x 25.3 in |
| Listed weight | 8.5 pounds |
| Warranty | 1 year limited warranty |
| Model | COH-513 |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #10,728 overall; #18 in Patio Heaters (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Portability is Cuisinart’s answer: an 11,000 BTU heater that sits on a table and weighs 8.5 pounds in the specs, the lightest listed weight here. The listing says it “efficiently warms up to 30 sq. ft.” with a “reflector top plate.”
Fuel is flexible. You can “Use a 1-lb. propane tank or connect the patio heater to a 20-lbs propane tank (with optional regulator, not included).” Safety features are “a built-in anti-tilt automatic shut-off and a burner screen guard.” Heat runs from low to high on a dial knob.
Amazon.com sells it, the warranty field reads “1 year limited warranty,” and it ranks #18 in Patio Heaters and #10,728 overall. Missing from the bullets: flame-out protection and any certification mark, both of which the Sweetcrispy or Tangkula list. Thirty square feet is a fraction of the towers’ reach.
Couples on a small patio, campers and tailgaters will appreciate it. Families heating a full seating area should step up to a tower, and anyone in an apartment should check building rules on propane first.
Pros
- Runs on a 1 lb cylinder or a 20 lb tank with an optional regulator
- Anti-tilt automatic shut-off and burner screen guard
- Listed weight 8.5 lb, size 12.5 x 16.5 x 25.3 in
- Warranty field: “1 year limited warranty”
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Warms up to 30 sq ft, far less than a tower
- No flame-out protection mentioned
- No certification mark named
- Regulator for a 20 lb tank sold separately
Best for: A couple or small household that wants portable propane warmth on a table or for camping and tailgates.
5. Dr. Infrared Heater DR-298: Best Mountable Electric Infrared Heater
Dr. Infrared’s DR-298 is a 1500-watt electric infrared heater that plugs into a standard outlet and burns no fuel. A carbon infrared element and an aluminum reflector the brand describes as 90% reflective aim heat at people and objects instead of warming the surrounding air, the approach infrared patio heaters rely on.
The listing calls out three ways to set it up. You can use it freestanding on its weighted base with wheels, or mount it on a wall or ceiling to keep it off the floor. A remote switches between 900, 1200 and 1500 watts, and a programmable timer runs up to 12 hours before switching the heater off.
Safety features in the listing are automatic tip-over protection and over-temperature protection, and the brand says the heater won’t operate without the baseplate installed. The listing says it is ETL certified and built with a rust-resistant aluminum housing for patios, garages and workshops as well as indoor rooms. This listing doesn’t state an IP water-resistance rating. The specs give 25 x 11.5 x 39 inches, 10.7 pounds, and a “1-Year Limited Components Warranty.”
It suits covered patios, screened areas, garages and workshops with an outdoor-rated, GFCI-protected outlet nearby, and anyone who would rather avoid propane tanks altogether.
Why we like it
- Three mounting options
- Stated ETL certification
- Remote with 12-hour timer
Watch out for
No IP rating appears on this listing, so keep it sheltered from rain, and plug it into a GFCI-protected outlet.
Key Specifications
| Type | Electric carbon infrared, 1500W |
|---|---|
| Power | 900W, 1200W or 1500W (listing) |
| Element | Carbon infrared, 90% reflective aluminum reflector |
| Mounting | Freestanding base with wheels; wall or ceiling |
| Safety (listing) | Tip-over and over-temperature protection; ETL certified |
| Size | 25 x 11.5 x 39 in |
| Listed weight | 10.7 pounds |
| Warranty | 1-Year Limited Components Warranty |
| Model | DR-298; made by Dr. Heater USA |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #1,401 overall; #2 in Patio Heaters (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Mounting options make the DR-298 the most flexible electric pick: “portable freestanding heater with its weighted base and easy-roll wheels, or securely mount it to a wall or ceiling.” Neither the VAGKRI nor the MOMOKOVA lists wall or ceiling mounting.
Power steps through “900W, 1200W, or 1500W” by remote, with a “programmable timer (up to 12 hours).” Safety reads “automatic Tip-Over Protection and Over-Temperature Protection,” and the listing adds “(ETL Certified).” It also says “The heater will not operate without the baseplate installed.”
Amazon.com sells it, and it ranks #2 in Patio Heaters and #1,401 overall, the best electric rank here. The specs list 25 x 11.5 x 39 inches and 10.7 pounds, with a “1-Year Limited Components Warranty.” One gap: this listing states no IP rating, while the VAGKRI title lists IPX5 and the MOMOKOVA IP55.
Covered patios, garages and workshops are where it fits best, ideally mounted out of reach. Uncovered decks exposed to rain call for a model with a stated IP rating.
Pros
- ETL certified, per the listing
- Tip-over and over-temperature protection
- Freestanding, wall or ceiling mount
- Remote with 900/1200/1500W and 12-hour timer
- #2 in Patio Heaters; sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- No IP rating stated in this listing
- Needs a nearby outlet; 1500W draws about 12.5 amps by our math
- Warranty covers components (“1-Year Limited Components Warranty”)
- Won’t run without its baseplate installed, per the listing
Best for: Someone with a covered patio, garage or workshop who wants flame-free infrared heat they can mount out of the way.
6. VAGKRI 42-Inch 1500W Infrared Tower Heater: Best Electric Tower Heater
VAGKRI’s heater is a slim 42-inch infrared tower that runs on household current. It stands upright like a floor lamp and throws heat across what the brand calls a 100-degree wide angle, so you point it toward a seating area rather than placing it in the middle of a group.
Control is the selling point. The listing offers nine power settings from 620 watts to 1500 watts, so you can dial back output on a mild evening, and a timer you can set anywhere from 1 to 24 hours. The title adds a remote. VAGKRI claims it delivers warmth in one second; treat that as the brand’s claim.
The listing says the heater is ETL Listed and made from weatherproof aluminum, and the title rates it IPX5. It also says it is free from odors, chemicals or fumes and lists both indoor and outdoor uses, from offices and bedrooms to patios and garages. The bullets don’t mention tip-over or overheat protection. The specs list a size of 5.7 x 3.5 x 41.7 inches, with weight and warranty fields empty.
It suits covered patios, porches and garages where a narrow footprint matters and you want fine control over output. Ask the seller about tip-over protection if it will stand where it could be bumped.
Why we like it
- Nine heat levels
- 24-hour timer
- Stated ETL listing
Watch out for
The bullets don’t mention a tip-over switch, so place it where it can’t be knocked over and confirm the feature with the seller.
Key Specifications
| Type | Electric infrared tower, 1500W |
|---|---|
| Power | 9 levels, 620W–1500W (listing) |
| Heating angle | 100° wide angle (listing) |
| Timer | 1–24 hours |
| Rating (listing) | ETL Listed; IPX5 (title) |
| Size | 5.7 x 3.5 x 41.7 in |
| Listed weight | Not stated in listing |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
| Model | VA-OH01 New-2 |
| Seller | VAGKRI Brand |
| Best Sellers Rank | #19,501 overall; #43 in Patio Heaters (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Heat control is VAGKRI’s edge: “9 different power settings (620W to 1500W),” against three on the Dr. Infrared and MOMOKOVA. Its timer runs “from 1 to 24 hours,” double the Dr. Infrared’s 12.
The listing calls it “ETL Listed” and built from “long-lasting weatherproof aluminum,” and the title rates it “IPX5 Waterproof.” Heating spreads across a “100° wide-angle range” from a 42-inch tower. Claims such as “1S Fast Heating” and “free from odors, chemicals, or fumes” are the brand’s own.
VAGKRI Brand, the maker’s store, sells it. It ranks #43 in Patio Heaters and #19,501 overall, and the weight and warranty fields are empty. The biggest gap is safety detail: the bullets don’t mention tip-over or overheat protection, which the Dr. Infrared and MOMOKOVA both list. The listed 5.7 x 3.5-inch footprint looks like it excludes the base, so treat it as unconfirmed.
Patio owners who want many heat levels and a long timer will like it. Households with kids, pets or busy walkways should weigh the Dr. Infrared, which lists tip-over protection.
Pros
- ETL Listed, per the listing
- 9 power settings from 620W to 1500W
- 1–24 hour timer, the longest here
- Title lists IPX5 and a remote
- Sold by the brand’s store (VAGKRI Brand)
Cons
- No tip-over or overheat protection mentioned in the bullets
- Weight and warranty fields empty
- Weakest electric rank except MOMOKOVA: #19,501 overall
- “1S fast heating” is the brand’s claim
Best for: A buyer who wants a slim electric tower with many heat levels and a long timer for a covered patio or garage.
7. MOMOKOVA 1500W Tabletop Infrared Heater: Best Electric Tabletop Heater
MOMOKOVA’s tabletop heater looks like a lamp: a slim post on a round base with a heating head on top. It runs on electricity, with dual halogen tubes that the brand says heat objects directly rather than the air, and it is sized to sit on an outdoor table or stand on the ground beside a chair.
Day to day, you plug it in and pull a cord to step between 600, 900 and 1500 watts, which the listing says avoids bending over to reach a switch. There is no fan, and MOMOKOVA says it operates silently. The brand claims the infrared tubes last up to 8,000 hours.
For weather, the listing describes an IP55-rated waterproof and dustproof design and says it is safe in humid conditions or light rain. Safety features are a tip-over switch and overheat protection that shut the heater off if it tilts or gets too hot inside. The specs list a size of 16.5 x 16 x 32 inches, but the weight and warranty fields are empty and the model field holds a generic product description.
It suits balconies, porches and small patios where a propane flame isn’t allowed or wanted, and people who want quiet heat during a meal or while reading outside.
Why we like it
- Pull-cord heat settings
- IP55 rating stated
- Tip-over and overheat shutoff
Watch out for
The listing has no model number, weight or warranty details, so keep your order records in case you need support.
Key Specifications
| Type | Electric tabletop, halogen infrared, 1500W |
|---|---|
| Power | 600W, 900W or 1500W (listing) |
| Element | Dual halogen tubes; up to 8,000 hours (brand claim) |
| Rating (listing) | IP55 waterproof and dustproof |
| Safety (listing) | Tip-over switch; overheat protection |
| Size | 16.5 x 16 x 32 in |
| Listed weight | Not stated in listing |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
| Model | Not stated (model field reads “Electric Patio Outdoor Heater”) |
| Seller | MOMOKOVA Direct |
| Best Sellers Rank | #32,169 overall; #75 in Patio Heaters (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Quiet, table-height heat is the MOMOKOVA’s niche. It steps through “600W, 900W, and 1500W” with “a convenient pull-cord switch,” and the brand says it runs “silently without fans or noise.”
Weather and safety claims are specific: an “IP55-rated waterproof and dustproof design,” safe “in humid conditions or light rain,” plus “a sensitive tip-over switch and overheat protection.” Heat comes from “Dual high-quality halogen tubes” with a claimed lifespan “up to 8,000 hours.”
MOMOKOVA Direct, the brand’s store, is the seller. It ranks #75 in Patio Heaters and #32,169 overall, the lowest on this page. The model field reads only “Electric Patio Outdoor Heater,” and the weight and warranty fields are empty. Unlike the Dr. Infrared and VAGKRI, no ETL or other mark is named. The specs give 16.5 x 16 x 32 inches.
Small balconies and porches where propane isn’t allowed are a good match. Shoppers who want a stated certification mark should choose the Dr. Infrared instead.
Pros
- 600/900/1500W with a pull-cord switch
- IP55, per the listing
- Tip-over switch and overheat protection
- No fan; brand says it runs silently
- Sold by the brand’s store (MOMOKOVA Direct)
Cons
- Lowest rank here: #32,169 overall
- Model field is a generic description
- Weight and warranty fields empty
- No safety certification mark named
Best for: Someone who wants quiet electric warmth on an outdoor table and has a GFCI-protected outlet within reach.
How We Chose the Best Patio Heaters
We started with heaters that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store, then compared what each listing actually states:
- Fuel and output: propane BTU rating or electric wattage, and the heat range the listing gives.
- Safety features: tip-over shutoff, flame-out protection, oxygen depletion protection and overheat protection, only where listed.
- Safety marks and weather ratings: CSA, ETL and IP ratings only as the listing states them.
- Setup: wheels, anchors, water boxes and mounting options.
- Listing data: size, weight and warranty fields, seller and Amazon sales rank, with empty fields flagged.

Patio Heater Buying Guide
Best Propane Patio Heater: Towers Versus Pyramids
Propane towers carry the most heat. The Sweetcrispy lists 48,000 BTU, the Amazon Basics 46,000 BTU and the Tangkula pyramid 45,000 BTU. A mushroom-style tower spreads heat down from a reflector at the top; the Tangkula burns inside a glass tube for a visible flame column. All three list tilt shutoff. Flame-out protection appears on the Sweetcrispy and Tangkula listings, and only the Tangkula lists oxygen depletion protection and a CSA mark. Keep a propane tank gauge on the tank so a cold evening doesn’t end early.
Best Electric Patio Heater for Covered Spaces
Electric infrared heaters burn no fuel, so there is no tank to refill. All three electric picks top out at 1500 watts, about 12.5 amps on a 120-volt circuit by our math, which is a large share of a typical household circuit. The Dr. Infrared and VAGKRI listings state ETL marks; the VAGKRI title lists IPX5 and the MOMOKOVA lists IP55, while the Dr. Infrared listing gives no IP rating. NFPA’s electrical safety page says all outdoor receptacles should be GFCI protected and that extension cords are intended for temporary use.

Best Tabletop Patio Heater
Tabletop heaters warm one table, not a patio. The Cuisinart COH-513 lists 11,000 BTU and up to 30 square feet, running on a 1-pound propane cylinder or a 20-pound tank with an optional regulator. The MOMOKOVA is the electric alternative, with three power levels and a pull-cord switch. Both list tip-over shutoff. Put either one on a sturdy table where it can’t be bumped off.
Best Infrared Patio Heater: Mounting and Placement
Infrared heaters warm what they face, so placement matters more than raw output. The Dr. Infrared DR-298 is the only pick that lists wall and ceiling mounting, which keeps it off the floor. The VAGKRI tower lists a 100-degree heating angle, so aim it at the seating area. The U.S. Fire Administration’s heating fire safety page says to keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from all heat sources, including space heaters, and to turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

Wheels, Anchors and Wind
Tall heaters need a stable base. The Amazon Basics has a water box to weigh down the base, the Sweetcrispy includes ground anchors for uneven ground, and the Tangkula and Amazon Basics both roll on wheels. Ontario’s Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) says in its patio heater maintenance guidance to position outdoor heaters on a stable surface so they won’t get knocked over, and never to move a portable heater while the flame is lit; shut off the fuel and let the unit cool first.
Patio Heater Safety: Fire and Carbon Monoxide
Propane heaters produce carbon monoxide (CO). TSSA says CO is produced by all devices that burn fuel, like patio heaters, that deadly CO can accumulate in any environment with limited air movement, and that patio heaters are designed for outdoor use only in open areas away from combustible materials. Never run a propane patio heater in a garage, enclosed porch, tent or any shelter with limited airflow, and keep working CO alarms in the home; our carbon monoxide detector guide covers options.
TSSA’s fall patio heater tips add four points that apply at home: follow the manufacturer’s required clearances from umbrellas, awnings, walls, tablecloths and decorations; never leave a patio heater unattended; never store propane cylinders indoors, in a garage or close to an operating heater; and know where a fire extinguisher is. If you don’t own one, see our fire extinguisher guide.

Check the propane connection before each season. NFPA’s grilling safety page describes the test for gas grills: brush a soapy solution on the hose, regulator and connections with the cylinder turned on, and bubbles mean a leak. Follow your heater manual’s own leak-test steps, and don’t light it until any leak is fixed. Hanging lights near a heater? Keep them well outside the manual’s clearances; our outdoor string lights guide covers safe setups.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best patio heater for most homes?
The Amazon Basics 46,000 BTU propane heater is our top pick. It ranks #1 in Amazon’s Patio Heaters category, lists a tilt safety auto shut-off valve and a water box for base weight, and heats up to a 9-foot radius, per the listing.
Can I use a propane patio heater in a garage or enclosed porch?
No. TSSA says patio heaters are designed for outdoor use only in open areas, and that carbon monoxide from fuel-burning devices can build up anywhere with limited air movement. Use propane heaters only in open air, with the manual’s clearances.
Is an electric or propane patio heater better?
Propane towers such as the 48,000 BTU Sweetcrispy put out more heat for groups in open yards. Electric infrared heaters like the Dr. Infrared DR-298 need no tank and suit covered patios with a GFCI-protected outlet nearby.
Which patio heaters have a tip-over shutoff?
Six of our seven picks list one: Amazon Basics, Sweetcrispy, Tangkula, Cuisinart, Dr. Infrared and MOMOKOVA. The VAGKRI bullets don’t mention it. The Tangkula also lists flame-out and oxygen depletion protection.
How far should a patio heater be from walls and umbrellas?
Follow the clearances in your heater’s manual; they vary by model. TSSA lists umbrellas, awnings, walls, tablecloths and decorations among the combustibles to keep clear, and USFA says to keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from heat sources.
The Bottom Line
For most open patios, the Amazon Basics 46,000 BTU is the best patio heater to start with: the top seller in its category, with tilt shutoff and a weighted base. The Sweetcrispy adds flame-out protection and a side table, and the Tangkula pyramid brings a visible flame with the longest list of safety features. The Cuisinart heats a single table, while the Dr. Infrared, VAGKRI and MOMOKOVA electric models suit covered spaces with an outlet. Whatever you choose, keep propane outdoors, respect the manual’s clearances, and never leave a heater running unattended.
