The best baby gate for stairs depends first on which end of the staircase it guards. At the top, child-safety guidance calls for a gate screwed into the wall or banister. At the bottom, or across a doorway, a pressure-mounted gate that wedges into the opening is a common choice.
We compared six gates that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store: two Regalo pressure gates, a Toddleroo by North States gate that mounts either way, a Safety 1st walk-through, an auto-closing steel gate from Cumbor and a retractable mesh gate from PRObebi. Openings run from 26 to 56 inches, and heights from 26 to 34 inches.
For each, we quote the mount type, width range and gaps, height, door and latch features, and any certification exactly as the listing states it. Measure your opening at the top and bottom before you shop, and check where a gate can and can’t be installed.

1. Regalo Easy Step Walk-Through Gate: Best Overall Pressure Gate
Regalo’s Easy Step is a pressure-mounted gate with a walk-through door, sold for the bottom of stairs, hallways and doorways. It stands 30 inches tall and, by the listing, expands to fit openings 29 to 38.5 inches wide. Read the fit chart closely: it fits 29 to 32 inches with no extension and 35.5 to 38.5 inches with the included 6-inch extension, but it does not fit openings between 32 and 35.5 inches.
Pressure mounting means the frame tightens against the sides of the opening instead of being screwed in. Regalo’s instructions on the listing are firm: install according to the manufacturer’s instructions, wall cups must be used to keep the gate securely in place, and to prevent falls, never use it at the top of stairs.
Day to day, adults pass through the door rather than stepping over the frame, and the listing describes a secure safety locking system. Regalo says it is designed for babies 6 to 24 months and small to medium pets. The listing calls it “certified by the Baby Safety Alliance” and notes that Regalo is an American-designed, family-owned brand that has made gates for over 30 years. The specs file lists 9 pounds, and the warranty field is empty. Amazon.com sells it.
It suits parents who want a no-drill gate for the bottom of the stairs or a kitchen doorway, as long as the opening falls inside one of the two fit ranges.
Why we like it
- Walk-through door
- No drilling
- Clear fit chart on the listing
Watch out for
Measure before you buy: openings between 32 and 35.5 inches fall in the gap, and it must never go at the top of stairs.

| Best Sellers Rank | #53 overall; #1 in Door & Stair Gates (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Popularity leads the case: the Easy Step ranks #1 in Door & Stair Gates and #53 overall, though that rank is shared with the extra wide Regalo, so it likely covers the listing family. Amazon.com sells it.
Regalo is clear on placement: “Wall cups must be used” and “To prevent falls, never use at the top of stairs.” Fit needs care: “FITS OPENINGS: 29–32″ no extension, 35.5–38.5″ with 6″. DOES NOT FIT OPENINGS: 32–35.5″.” The Toddleroo’s continuous 26–42 inch range has no such gap.
It stands “30″ tall,” taller than the Toddleroo and Safety 1st but shorter than the Cumbor and PRObebi. The listing says it is “certified by the Baby Safety Alliance,” not JPMA. The warranty field is empty, and the specs list 9 pounds. Like the Safety 1st, it has a walk-through door, but no lock indicator.
Families gating the bottom of the stairs or a standard doorway should start here. Anyone needing a top-of-stairs gate, or with an opening of 32 to 35.5 inches, should look elsewhere.
Pros
- #1 in Door & Stair Gates
- Walk-through door with safety lock
- 30 in tall
- Fits 29–32 in, or 35.5–38.5 in with the 6 in extension
- Listing: “certified by the Baby Safety Alliance”
Cons
- Pressure mount only: listing says never use at the top of stairs
- Doesn’t fit openings of 32–35.5 in
- Warranty field empty
- Wall cups must be used
Best for: A family that needs a simple walk-through gate at the bottom of the stairs or across a standard doorway.
2. Toddleroo by North States Supergate Ergo: Best Budget Gate for Top of Stairs
Toddleroo by North States makes the Supergate Ergo, a plastic gate that installs two ways. The listing describes a pressure mount for quick setup in doorways, or a hardware mount for use as a stairway gate that swings open. All the hardware is included, and the listing states that for stairway use, hardware mounting is required.
It adjusts to fit openings from 26 to 42 inches wide without separate extension panels, and stands 26 inches tall. North States says it is designed to be difficult for kids to climb. An ergonomic, easy-press handle is meant to open smoothly and lock securely in seconds, even with one hand.
The listing describes it as a “JPMA-certified baby gate,” made in the USA, and built for children ages 6 to 24 months. The specs file lists 5.8 pounds, the warranty field is empty, and Amazon.com is the seller. The specs give the size as 27.25 by 2.63 by 26 inches.
It suits budget-minded families who need a screw-in gate at the top of the stairs, and anyone with an opening that falls in the gaps of extension-based gates. Renters should check whether they can drill before choosing the hardware mount, and can still use the pressure mount in doorways.
Why we like it
- Hardware mount for stairs
- Continuous 26–42 in range
- Stated JPMA certification
Watch out for
At 26 inches it is the shortest gate here, so keep an eye out once your toddler starts trying to climb.

| Model | 8718; made by North States Industries |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #382 overall; #8 in Door & Stair Gates (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Flexibility for the price is the Supergate Ergo’s case. It offers “pressure-mounted baby gate for a quick setup or hardware-mounted for use as a stairway safety gate,” and states plainly: “For stairway use, hardware mounting is required.” It is the most affordable hardware-capable gate here.
It is also the only pick whose listing says “JPMA-certified.” The width range is continuous, “26 to 42 inches wide,” with no extension gaps, unlike both Regalos. The “ergonomic, easy-press handle” opens “even with one hand.”
Amazon.com sells it, and it ranks #8 in Door & Stair Gates and #382 overall. The warranty field is empty, and the specs list 5.8 pounds. Height is its weak spot: “26 inches tall” is the lowest on the page, eight inches below the PRObebi.
Budget shoppers who need a screw-in gate at the top of the stairs will get the most from it. Parents of tall or determined climbers should weigh the taller Cumbor or PRObebi.
Pros
- Mounts with hardware or pressure; hardware included
- Listing says hardware mounting is required for stairway use
- Fits 26–42 in, no extensions
- Title and bullets: “JPMA-certified”
- One-hand ergonomic handle
Cons
- Shortest gate here at 26 in
- Plastic construction
- Warranty field empty
- Swing-open use described only for hardware mount
Best for: A family on a tight budget that needs a gate it can screw in at the top of the stairs.
3. Cumbor 30–46 in Auto-Close Gate: Best Auto-Close Gate
Cumbor’s steel gate is built around an auto-close door. The listing says it closes behind you, so you don’t have to remember to swing it shut while carrying a baby or a laundry basket. Adults open it with one hand, and a double-lock safety release is meant to be difficult for toddlers to open.
It installs two ways. Pressure mounting suits doorways and hallways with no drilling, and hardware mounting is offered for stairways and high-traffic areas that need a stronger, fixed fit. Cumbor includes two Y-bolt adapters, which the listing says work when no more than two of the four mounting points are round banisters. A bottom support bar adds stability, and an included ramp accessory smooths the step over it; Cumbor asks buyers to confirm the threshold suits their space.
The gate stands 30.5 inches tall and adjusts from 30 to 46 inches wide. Cumbor says to measure both the top and bottom of your opening before ordering. The listing mentions a Mom’s Choice Award but no JPMA or ASTM certification. The specs file lists 13.5 pounds, the warranty field is empty, and Cumbor sells it through its own store.
It suits busy homes with a lot of foot traffic and stairways where a sturdy, screw-in gate with a self-closing door makes sense.
Why we like it
- Closes itself
- Banister adapters included
- Steel frame
Watch out for
The bottom bar stays in the walkway even with the ramp, and no safety certification is stated on the listing.
Key Specifications

| Model | S7V2 |
| Seller | Cumbor |
| Best Sellers Rank | #236 overall; #5 in Door & Stair Gates (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Hands-free closing is the reason to choose the Cumbor. Its “auto-close feature” means the gate “closes behind you,” the only self-closing door among our picks, paired with a “double-lock safety release.”
It covers both placements: “pressure mounting for suitable doorways” or “hardware mounting for stairways and high-traffic areas.” It includes “two Y-Bolt adapters” for round banisters, which no other pick mentions. A “bottom support bar” adds stability, with a ramp to ease the step.
Cumbor sells it, and it ranks #5 in Door & Stair Gates and #236 overall, the best rank after the Regalos. At a listed 13.5 pounds it is the heaviest pick. It stands “30.5″ tall” and adjusts “from 30″ to 46″ wide.” The listing cites a “Mom’s Choice Award,” which is not a safety certification, and names no JPMA or ASTM standard. The warranty field is empty.
High-traffic homes with banister stairs are its natural fit. Families who want no bar across the floor should look at the PRObebi retractable.
Pros
- Auto-close door with double-lock release
- Pressure or hardware mount, including stairways
- Y-bolt adapters for round banisters
- Steel frame, 30.5 in tall
- #5 in Door & Stair Gates
Cons
- Heaviest gate here at 13.5 lb
- Bottom support bar across the opening
- No safety certification stated (Mom’s Choice Award only)
- Warranty field empty
Best for: Parents who walk through a gate many times a day, often with full hands, and want it to close itself.
4. Regalo 29–56 in Extra Wide Gate: Best Extra Wide Gate
Regalo’s extra wide gate stretches from 29 to 56 inches using a set of 4-, 8- and 12-inch extensions. It is a pressure-mounted, walk-through gate that stands 30 inches tall, sold for the bottom of stairs, hallways and large openings.
The fit chart matters more here than on a narrow gate. The listing says it fits 29 to 32 inches with no extension, then specific ranges with each extension or combination, up to 53.5 to 56 inches with all three. It does not fit openings of 32 to 34, 39 to 41.5, 44.5 to 46.5 or 52 to 53.5 inches, so measure carefully before ordering.
Installation follows the same rules as Regalo’s narrower gate: follow the manufacturer’s instructions, use the wall cups, and never use it at the top of stairs. The door has a safety locking system, and Regalo designs it for babies 6 to 24 months and small to medium pets. The listing says it is “certified by the Baby Safety Alliance.” The warranty field reads “6 month limited.,” the specs file lists 13 pounds, and Amazon.com sells it.
It suits homes with open floor plans or wide stair bottoms where a standard 38-inch gate falls short. Families who also have pets will note that Regalo pitches it for small to medium dogs as well as babies.
Why we like it
- Spans up to 56 inches
- Walk-through door
- Extensions included
Watch out for
Four width gaps make the fit chart essential, and pressure mounting rules out the top of the stairs.
Key Specifications
| Type | Pressure mount, walk-through |
|---|---|
| Mount | Pressure, with wall cups |
| Fits | 29–56 in with extensions (gaps apply) |
| Height | 30 in |
| Listed weight | 13 lb |
| Size | 1 x 30 x 56 in |
| Listed weight | 13 pounds |
| Warranty | 6 month limited. |
| Model | 1158 DS |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #53 overall; #1 in Door & Stair Gates (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Width is the whole story: this Regalo “Expands to fit openings 29–56″ wide,” the widest top end on the page, two inches beyond the PRObebi.
The catch is the gaps. It “DOES NOT FIT: 32-34″, 39-41.5″, 44.5-46.5″, or 52-53.5″,” so measure before ordering. The PRObebi’s 0–54 inch range has no gaps but requires screws. Like the Easy Step, it is pressure-only: “never use at the top of stairs.”
Amazon.com sells it, and it shares the #1 Door & Stair Gates rank with the Easy Step. It is the only pick with a filled warranty field: “6 month limited.” The specs list 13 pounds, second-heaviest after the Cumbor. The listing says “certified by the Baby Safety Alliance.”
Owners with wide stair bottoms or open floor plans should consider it. Anyone whose opening falls in a gap, or who needs top-of-stairs protection, should choose another gate.
Pros
- Widest range here: 29–56 in
- Includes 4, 8 and 12 in extensions
- Walk-through door, 30 in tall
- Warranty field: “6 month limited.”
- #1 in Door & Stair Gates
Cons
- Pressure mount only: never at the top of stairs
- Several width gaps where it doesn’t fit
- Listed 13 lb, among the heaviest here
- Wall cups required
Best for: A family with a wide opening at the bottom of the stairs or between rooms that a standard gate can’t span.
5. Safety 1st Easy Install Walk Thru Gate: Best Walk-Through With Lock Indicator
Safety 1st’s Easy Install Walk Thru gate is a pressure-mounted gate with a door, aimed at doorways. Its standout feature is the SecureTech indicator on the top rail, which turns from red to green so you can see when the gate is securely locked.
Installation needs no tools. The listing says it includes four wall cups and must be installed with them to keep the gate in place, and it is explicit that the pressure-installed mode should never be used at the top of stairs. Adults open it with one hand, while the two-action handle is meant to be tough for little fingers.
It adjusts to doorways 29 to 38 inches wide and stands 28 inches high. The main gate covers up to 32 inches, one extension takes it to 35 inches and two extensions, both included, reach 38 inches. The specs file lists 9.75 pounds, the warranty field is empty, and Amazon.com is the seller. The listing names no JPMA or ASTM certification.
It suits families who mainly need to block a kitchen, bathroom or nursery doorway and want reassurance at a glance that the latch has caught. Renters will appreciate that it goes up and comes down without leaving screw holes, as long as the wall cups are used as directed.
Why we like it
- Visible lock indicator
- Tool-free install
- Two extensions included
Watch out for
Keep it to doorways and the bottom of stairs; the listing rules out pressure mode at the top of stairs.
Key Specifications

| Model | GA105WHOC1Z; made by Dorel Juvenile Group |
| Seller | Amazon.com |
| Best Sellers Rank | #1,080 overall; #17 in Door & Stair Gates (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Seeing the lock is what the Safety 1st adds. Its “SecureTech red-to-green indicator on the top rail allows you to see when your gate is securely locked,” a feature no other pick lists.
Its “two-action handle remains tough for little fingers,” and adults can open it “with just one hand.” Fit is “29” to 38” wide”: “up to 32” with main gate; up to 35” with one extension; up to 38” with two extensions (included).” The listing warns: “never use pressure-installed gate mode at the top of stairs.”
Amazon.com sells it, and it ranks #17 in Door & Stair Gates and #1,080 overall, the lowest rank here. At “28” high,” it’s taller only than the Toddleroo. No certification is named, and the warranty field is empty. The specs list 9.75 pounds.
Families gating doorways who want a quick visual lock check will appreciate it. Anyone needing extra width or a top-of-stairs gate should look at the Regalo 29–56 or a hardware-mounted pick.
Pros
- SecureTech red-to-green lock indicator
- One-hand opening, two-action handle
- Fits 29–38 in with two included extensions
- Four wall cups included
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Pressure mount only; never at the top of stairs in pressure mode
- 28 in tall, shorter than most here
- No certification stated
- Warranty field empty
Best for: Parents who want a no-drill doorway gate with a quick visual check that it’s locked.
6. PRObebi Retractable Mesh Gate: Best Retractable Gate
PRObebi’s retractable gate is a roll-up mesh barrier. When you need it, you pull the mesh across the opening and latch it; when you don’t, it rolls away into its housing. The listing highlights that there is no bottom rail to trip over, which suits narrow hallways and open-plan homes.
It extends from 0 to 54 inches wide and stands 34 inches tall. Installation uses the included anchors and screws, and an adjustable lower bracket slides up and down to fit around baseboards. PRObebi lists stairs, doorways, hallways, decks and porches among its uses.
Operation is one-handed: press and pull to open or close it. A two-step lock is meant to keep babies and dogs contained, by pressing down and rotating left to lock and right to release. The mesh is described as strong, tear-resistant and see-through. The specs file lists 3.7 pounds, the warranty field is empty, and PRObebi sells it through its own store. The listing names no JPMA or ASTM certification.
It suits families who want a gate that vanishes when not in use, especially across wide openings, and who are comfortable drilling to install it. Pet owners may also find it handy on a deck or porch, two places the listing names, though child safety should come first.
Why we like it
- Rolls out of the way
- No trip bar
- Covers up to 54 inches
Watch out for
Plan on drilling, and check that the two-step lock is fully engaged every time, since the mesh is softer than a rigid gate.
Key Specifications

| Seller | probebi |
| Best Sellers Rank | #392 overall; #9 in Door & Stair Gates (Oct 2026) |
Why We Recommend It
Height and a clear floor set the PRObebi apart. At “34” H” it is the tallest gate here, and its “No bottom rail to trip over” design is unique among our picks.
It “Extends 0–54″ wide” with no extension gaps, unlike the Regalo extra wide. It “comes complete with anchors, screws,” and an “adjustable lower bracket” fits around baseboards. The “DOUBLE-LOCK SAFETY” works by “press down and rotate left to lock, right to release.”
PRObebi sells it, and it ranks #9 in Door & Stair Gates and #392 overall. At a listed 3.7 pounds it is the lightest pick. The listing names no JPMA or ASTM certification, and the warranty field is empty. KidsHealth suggests rigid bars or a tight mesh screen, so check the mesh tension after installation.
Families who want a tall gate that disappears when not in use, and can drill, should shortlist it. Renters who can’t drill should look at the pressure-mounted Regalos or Safety 1st for doorways.
Pros
- Tallest gate here at 34 in
- Extends 0–54 in
- No bottom rail to trip over
- Lightest pick at a listed 3.7 lb
- #9 in Door & Stair Gates
Cons
- Requires anchors and screws
- No certification stated
- Warranty field empty
- Mesh, not rigid bars
Best for: A household that wants a gate that disappears when not in use, across a hallway, landing or wide opening.
How We Chose the Best Baby Gates for Stairs
We limited our picks to gates that were in stock and sold by Amazon.com or the brand’s own store, and avoided accordion-style designs. Then we compared what each listing states:
- Mount type: hardware (screwed in), pressure (wedged in) or both, and where the listing says each can be used.
- Width range and gaps: the openings each gate fits, including widths it can’t cover.
- Height: from 26 to 34 inches across our picks.
- Door and latch: walk-through doors, auto-close, one-hand release and lock indicators.
- Certification wording: quoted as stated, and flagged when a listing names none.

Baby Gate Buying Guide
Top of Stairs: Choose a Hardware-Mounted Gate
Mount type is the most important choice. KidsHealth, the Nemours parent site, says in its guide to choosing safe gates that a gate at the top of stairs should be hardware-mounted, attached to the door frame without openings that could trap fingers or necks. HealthyChildren.org, from the American Academy of Pediatrics, advises in its home safety checklist installing safety gates at both the top and bottom of stairs when your child is learning to crawl and walk, using gates firmly mounted to the home’s studs. Among our picks, the Toddleroo Supergate Ergo, Cumbor and PRObebi offer hardware mounting.
Best Pressure Mounted Baby Gate
Pressure gates wedge into an opening with no drilling, which makes them popular with renters. KidsHealth says pressure-mounted and freestanding gates can be used in doorways between rooms or at the bottom of stairs, but that they can fall over if a child pushes hard enough. Both Regalo listings and the Safety 1st listing say never to use their pressure gates at the top of stairs, and all three require wall cups.

Best Extra Wide Baby Gate
Wide openings need either extensions or a retractable design. The Regalo 29–56 inch gate reaches 56 inches with three extensions, but it has four width gaps it can’t fill. The PRObebi retractable covers anything up to 54 inches with no gaps. Measure the top and bottom of the opening, as Cumbor’s listing advises, since walls and banisters aren’t always plumb.
Best Retractable Baby Gate
Retractable mesh gates roll away when you don’t need them and leave no bar on the floor. The trade-off is installation: the PRObebi uses anchors and screws, and mesh gives more than rigid bars. KidsHealth suggests choosing a gate with a straight top edge and either rigid bars or a tight mesh screen.

Best Walk Through Baby Gate
A door saves stepping over the gate dozens of times a day. Both Regalos, the Safety 1st and the Cumbor have walk-through doors. The Cumbor adds auto-close, so the door shuts behind you, and the Safety 1st adds a red-to-green lock indicator. Check one-hand operation if you’ll often be carrying a baby.
Skip Old Accordion Gates
KidsHealth warns against accepting an old accordion-style gate, because its diamond-shaped openings with wide Vs at the top can trap a baby’s head. HealthyChildren.org also says to avoid accordion-style gates, which can trap an arm or a neck. Any hand-me-down gate deserves a close look before you install it.

More Childproofing Around the Home
Gates are one layer of a childproofed home. Cabinet and drawer latches keep cleaners and sharp objects out of reach; see our guide to the best child safety locks. Good lighting on stairs and hallways helps adults carrying a child at night, and our motion sensor light guide covers solar, hardwired and plug-in options, including lights for stairs. Gates are meant for children roughly 6 months to 2 years, according to KidsHealth, so plan for the next stage too.
New Parents, New Home: Reviewing Your Coverage
A new baby often comes with other changes, such as a first home, a nursery renovation or more valuables. Questions about liability, personal property or how a policy handles injuries at home depend on your specific policy, so ask your agent. Our insurance tips for first-time Ohio homeowners and Ohio homeowners insurance guide cover what to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best baby gate for the top of stairs?
A hardware-mounted gate. KidsHealth says gates at the top of stairs should be hardware-mounted. Among our picks, the Toddleroo Supergate Ergo states that hardware mounting is required for stairway use, and the Cumbor and PRObebi also install with hardware.
Can you use a pressure mounted baby gate on stairs?
Only at the bottom. Both Regalo listings and the Safety 1st listing say never to use their pressure gates at the top of stairs. KidsHealth says pressure-mounted gates can be used in doorways or at the bottom of stairs.
What is the best extra wide baby gate?
The Regalo 29–56 inch gate spans the widest range here using 4-, 8- and 12-inch extensions, though it has width gaps. The PRObebi retractable covers up to 54 inches with no gaps but needs to be screwed in.
Are retractable baby gates safe?
Retractable gates like the PRObebi are hardware-mounted and leave no bottom rail. KidsHealth suggests a straight top edge with rigid bars or tight mesh. The PRObebi listing names no certification, so follow the installation instructions carefully and check the lock each time.
At what age do you stop using a baby gate?
KidsHealth says gates are meant for children between 6 months and 2 years of age, and the Regalo and Toddleroo listings give the same 6–24 month range. Stop relying on a gate once your child can climb over or open it.
The Bottom Line
Start with where the gate goes. For the top of the stairs, choose a hardware-mounted gate such as the budget Toddleroo Supergate Ergo, the auto-closing Cumbor or the retractable PRObebi. For the bottom of the stairs or a doorway, the Regalo Easy Step is our overall pick, the Regalo 29–56 inch covers wide openings, and the Safety 1st shows you when it’s locked. Measure first, follow the instructions and recheck the fit as your child grows.
